I really am going backwards and forwards on the whole 4k thing.

I was all set to have this staggered upgrade of 1 980 over the next month or 2, then another and a 4k monitor in about a years time.

A lot of people are suggesting they just won't have enough memory (4gb) though.

As usual, I'm sure the AMD cards will have more memory than you can shake a stick at but although I had read rumours about the 300 series getting released in November, I've seen more recently that February is being mooted for their release dates and dammnit, February's too far away!:o

No doubt Nvidia will sit on their hand until then with their Ti cards because of the success of the 970 and the 980.

4k is tantalisingly close to being a reality. It's just not quite there.

What size screen are you going for? At 27" I think 1440p is the sweet spot for resolution. 4k would make everything too small unless you start messing with DPI settings which isn't ideal. There are a lot of relatively cheap 28" 4k monitors but if I remember right they are limited to 30Hz and the panel is pretty crap apart from the resolution.

Yeah, you're talking about some fairly big monitors before 4k looks perfect. Having gamed at 27" and having gone back to 24" I'm not sure if I want a monitor that big though on a desk (as opposed to a longer distance away).

I already have 1440p. So a 980 would certainly tick the boxes for that and give a nice performance boost. You sortof need to adjust the DPI setting already but I don't because it buggers up some websites (and Chrome developer tools) when your 2nd screen isn't the same resolution.

The problem with them is that they're not standard and the prices really haven't moved a whole lot over the last year or so. Otherwise a 1440p 120hz+ monitor would be a very nice option but as it is they're more expensive than 4k monitors.

Whereas 2160p is dropping like a stone.

You can currently get decent 2160p screens for a little under twice as much as a 1440p screen but they're LED and 28in.

In a years time it could be a different story.

Is there a noticable improvement between 1080p and 1440p? I've to buy myself a monitor in the next month or so, as i'm not liking playing the pc from the couch anymore. Hadn't even considered 1440p, as i don't even know if my pc is up to spec for that.

Even just for using in the day to day it's really nice to have all the space.

It's tough to run without modern hardware (ideally, a 3GB graphics card) for the more challenging games (Battlefield, Crysis, etc) but it runs strategy games easily and they look glorious.

There's just so much screen and everything is incredibly sharp.

I've loved mine. Got a Shimian from Korea (see Yamakasi Catleap thread over on the PC Building forum for more details).

Game manuals and game maps. I would still definitely buy a hard copy Elder Scrolls or GTA game rather than buy it online if it meant I was getting a physical map.

There is at 27" and above, in my experience. A bit like how there's a noticeable difference between 1080p and 720p at 24" but maybe not at smaller resolutions for some people.

I ran 1440p with a 6970 2GB for a year and a bit. Worked fine for the games I played but I was playing RTS/Strategy/MMO games usually.

It really comes down to budget and needs.

If I was getting a 27" monitor, I'd definitely be getting a 1440p one. My friend has one of the Dell ultrasharp ones and it's amazing. I'm very jealous.

Yeah, those are really nice monitors. I went from 27" to 2 x 24", I went with two Dell 16:10 monitors and I'm very happy with it. :)

    Thanks so much again.
It says VGN-NW20EF (model number) and it's 4 years old.

I'll do a run on that site :)

    Did you use the site?

To be honest i reckon the laptop would struggle to run the game even on very low settings, from a bit of research the laptop has an old dual core processor(Intel t4300) and the integrated graphics are not up to much. The site should show you where it will struggle as can never be exactly sure by just a laptop model number im looking at the right one as there are so many variations. It does meet the minimum requirements for the game but just about.

Is Steam running slow as hell for anyone else? Not able to load the store page or workshop pages. Same on the website too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,000 ✭✭✭Wossack

the store, offers popup page, profile pages etc have always being real slow for me. Funny, cause it downloads updates etc full speed no bother, but just seems like the 'web' stuff is delivered over a 28 baud modem

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,237 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

Oh yeah, I'm well used to the standard slowness, but it's been exceptionally slow for me tonight.

Modding tools have been released today which reminded me about it... Mostly positive reviews from Steam users too.

Edit: Well scratch that - I don't meet the minimum specs. Boo-urns. Happening a lot now (as is to be expected), but I can't afford to build atm.

I started playing Skyrim again recently and was wandering around Winterhold when a quest appeared from a long forgotten mod I'd installed ages ago, and had forgotten about. It simply said "The Blue Box". I decided to the do the quest and walked into an old Chapel type building and saw this.

    Brilliant!
