I am currently working trying to become more toned using some cardio (I’m happy enough with the work I am doing here) and some weights.

I am about 6’ 1’’ and just under 15st – I wouldn’t say I’m overweight but I could do with trying to get rid of a bit of a soft middle.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what type of strength training I should be doing considering I don’t want to be massive like a body builder but well-toned/defined in the future.

My preference is to use free weights (dumb bells would be best) and I don’t mind things like sit ups press ups etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Google starting strength.

    Improving your food will help.

Starting strength or stronglifts are decent programmes to kick off with. They're pretty straightforward.

You won't accidentally become a body builder, I hate these comments. It makes it sound so easy.

Have a read of Joe Mangienello's book Evolution. I just completed the 6 week program and it has made a massive change to my physique. Have added muscle while staying very lean. I think it the type of thing that you are looking for.

    Unless protein shakes.

Coming from nothing, anything you do is going to make an improvement. Set a schedule of x times per week for your strength program and stick to it until it becomes a habit. What generally happens is its great for the first while, then boredom sets in, you have to work past that.

A pet peeve of mine as well.

Me to OH: Take up weights.
OH: I don't want to get big arms.
Me: I wish it was that simple.
