lovely....how good is the cyclops ?

am tempted to get the pepsi one

DT, I have no other watch with cyclop so don't have a reference point, but the date is magnified enough to be seen very well at arm lenghts (and I have long arms :D).

You lucky soandso:D ...mine hasn't even shipped yet.

    Whats it like?

I got one when they went on sale the first day and it took 2 weeks for shipping.

The blue is a nice deep colour that changes with the light, its more black indoors and blue outside.

IMHO the 960 case for this modern reissue is on the small size and should have been scaled up slightly as the lug to lug is only 39mm (the smallest of all the current cases). I thought the 710 case was small until I wore this

The bracelet is light but has a solid feel. Its a massive improvement from the standard hair puller :D

The one thing I didn't expect was that it is only 18mm wide. I assumed it would be 20mm like the rest. The end links are 20mm, the second link is 19mm and the rest are 18mm.

There is no micro adjustment to the clasp so its pot luck if you need to remove a link or two when sizing. (speaking of which if anybody has a spare link after sizing theirs I would be grateful as the bracelet is tight on me at the moment)

I like it and will keep me happy until the NVCH-30 reissue arrives later in the year :p

Not sure if they really are available - but there is an add to cart option currently on the black and blue Neptunes. I won't as I can't decide if I like or hate that lug set-up, love the rest of it.

its the only thing putting me off it aswell, apart from them not being available ;)

Another Russian from ebay has been added to the collection and i ain't a happy chappy. I was expecting the same quality as my 70's Raketa but it aint a patch on it, in fact i think there's a chap somewhere in Moscow having a good laugh at my expense :( I'll know better in future, buying on a whim aint a good idea :o!

On the plus side it looks alright with a nice NATO and for €40 it'll do fine for work, Needless to say i wont be too upset when it gets scratched or the movement packs in

I have found that the Russian stuff pre say mid 80's and the recent stuff from mid noughties onward is of higher quality than the examples that came along in that middle period.

About a month ago I got this nice Wittnauer Ref 200 calendar watch but the strap was a poor replacement. The lugs were 19mm but the watch case was 24 mm so anything 19mm looked poorly on it. Yesterday, my casio replacement stainless steel strap with 18mm lugs and 24mm shoulders arrived and I am so pleased with the watch. Completely new to Boards so disgusted today to find I can’t post photos until I have 50 posts. Sickened, ah well

Janiejones, if you post the link to your photo, but stick a space in the address so Boards doesn't see it as a link, I'll post it for you.

thanks, I'm new to this whole world of watches. It's kind of taken over my life. I now have 3 mechanical watches I'm very happy with (need a new strap for 1). This Wittnauer, a 70's Omega Geneve Cal. 1012 that I've put a Nomos horween strap on and a Seagull 1963 chronograph that just arrived that i need to get a new strap for.

Hopefully these will satiate this new fetish, I don't have the funds for the big Swiss brands

Nice collection you have there. Those Wittnauer's are very funky IMH.

Today I was wearing this one again. My Yema Superman "R", quartz, from the late 80's.

    4tkoea.jpg

I usually wear it on its original steel bracelet, but as recently I won a "Bond" Nato for 3.90 inc postage(late night drunken snipe), I thought after all my years of wearing Nato's I'd come to the party late and slap my Rolex clone onto a a Bond strap. :D

Actually this watch illustrated to me my previous experience that even relatively modern quartz movements can vary. The original Seiko movement died on my wrist and though they still make said movement today(though the date disk is a different colour) I was able to secure a late 80's NOS stock one on the Bay for under a tenner. :). Anyhoo, the original was about 5 seconds a week out of true, but the "new" one is running at just a smidgen over one second a month out. And this is a one jewel no thermocompensated movement, more plastic than metal.

As I said before in another thread, if you like the "rolex" look avec screw down crown, but cant find the cash and want to go for something a bit different and cool in its own way, you really couldn't go far wrong with a Yema Superman. They made them since 1963 in various guises and they were their top end model. The 60's and 70's automatics are very nice watches. Are much slimmer than a Rolex and others(mine is barely 10mm deep and most of that is bezel and crystal) especially when you consider their depth rating of nigh on a thousand feet down and they have the funky and patented bezel lock thingy at 3 o'clock. OH and the French military have used them at various times and they also supplied a "space watch" for French astronauts.

The best part is that you can get any of them from any time period for under a grand, more like 6-700 quid and the quartz ones for around 200 quid. Can't really go wrong for a vintage watch that is practical and has history behind it.

Parnis Marina Militare (Panerai homage) in titanium case.

No pictures of it on my wrist but this is one from this week

Lovely watch that - I've always fancied something with a power reserve, and some day, when my ship comes in, I'll go get a Jaeger Le-Coultre Master Calendar.

Did you get it online? No problems??

Nope, he's still got his. I managed to get a good deal on a new one from the US so jumped on it. Absolutely stunning dial, and just very cool knowing that parts of it were in space and on the moon. I'll take some more pics at the weekend.

I'm looking forward to taking some proper pictures as this doesn't show up how lovely the dial is. Not a bad catch for $36 :D.

Great catch CB. I'm more than slightly jealous.

$36 is a fantastic price. I came across a UG white shadow in a dealers a few years ago - it was a stunning watch but was priced at nearer €800 if I remember. Needless to say I did not buy it, but your one looks fantastic.

6-800 would be more like it alright TH, if you can find one. They are not a common watch by any stretch, so uncommon they don't appear in literature documenting this period in horology. Introduced in 75 as the world's thinnest quartz movement/watch. It's noticeably thinner than the quartz offerings from Girard Perreguax, Omega, Seiko, Longines at the time. It may also be UG's own in house design too. No one knows much about the movement. UG tended to buy in quartz and electric movements from external sources and treat them to extra finishing on the plates. Bulova for the most part. The UG Unisonic and Uniquartz are Bulova Accutron and Accuquartz movements respectively and they're not exactly common on the ground either. CB's White Shadow is a rare oddball in that mix. And for 36 quid. :D Don't let anyone say there aren't real bargains and real rarities out there still.

Speaking of rare early/mid 70's quartz...

Some may recall this example on the pics of my watches thread. 1973 Consul Quartz running the Girard Perregaux 300 series movement. No record of them existed until I found one. Dead and missing a crown.
    2is236.jpg
Well for the princely sum of a fiver I sourced a Favre with the same movement which gave up the crown and the right sized stem and some calender mechanism bits. Add a working movement I had laying around. As you do. If you're nuts. It lives, Igor, it lives!*lightning flashes* :) Fingers crossed it keeps living. So back from the dead and obscurity, but by god it's blingy, very blingy. At least 11 Liberace's. CB's UG is subtle, classy, this is about as subtle and classy as a housebrick to the face. :D

Please ignore the Nato strap. I'll source something more in keeping in the new year. If I don't CarltonBrowne will hunt me down and kill me like the cur I am...
