Terence is played by Paudge Behan, the same lad who play brian meehan in veronica guerin

I never picked up that Paulie was Big Balls' nephew.

    Was it explicitly stated?

Didn't Big Balls say it to Nidge in the night club in Spain that Paulie was his nephew just before he walked over to meet Nidge.

Nidge must have gone to some holy site to get his gash healed. How did it heal so fast.A big gaping wound and then he has a scar that looks years old.

Why did the traveller show up at peace talks if he had no interest in peace talks.I would Take the 10 k and pretend to make peace and kill Nidge when he was relaxed.

Yip- Terence introduced him as his nephew

Oh also, the GPS tracker plan by the travellers was stupid in the end. It appeared as though it was going to be a long game, find his pattern, find where he's weak and then strike. Instead, they just had some guy follow him in a van who told them where he was and they haphazardly lynched him and his bodyguard.

If Nidge's scar had been more prominent it would have cleared up the timeline confusion I think.

I disagree. The scene itself, in it's entirety, is fine but I think it would have worked far better with just 1 cut instead of about 4. There was too much going forward and back. At first it was a flash forward, then it was a flash back. Yes it was possible to track what was happening but it doesn't mean it was good or the best way to do it.

+1 It shouldn't have caused the confusion it did. Bad directorial choice imo. It basically consisted of Big Balls saying Nidge's days where numbered, over and over again. Too long.

Yes but they still have it on the van. It'll probably come back into play again in later episodes.

I agree it was pretty faint and had to go looking for it before i could figure out the time line, i would have thought a belt of a machete or slash hook would have left more of an impression after what 2 weeks- was it?

Perhaps yes but their plan was to be clinical, no mistakes. They were going to track him, find where he was weak and strike. None of that happened. They just followed him that day, waited till it was dark and attacked him (or rather his bodyguard) with bats and machetes... not guns. Only one guy had a gun by the looks of it. Stupid plan and lazy writing IMO introducing the hit as some calculated, sophisticated hit when it was anything but.

Really entertaining return. Seems a step up from the last series which was a bit meh. Agreed though on the silly back and forth to the Spain scene, just bloomin show it chronologically. Also the hit on Nidge was laughably bad.

I might be wrong but I think Patrick had decided he wasn't gonna accept Nidge's peace offering, regardless of money or the nits reference.

Seems they are jumping on the Breaking Bad bandwagon.

    Here's my two cents...

At the start I thought Elmo and Franno were after switching brains... Elmo all confident and in charge... Franno cowering like a coward... It seemed like there was a few inconsistencies in a lot of the characters.. But I guess it has been a year, it's gonna take them a while to remember who they were.. :pac: Not a fan of the flashback thing they are trying to do with Nidge and Terence Big Balls.

One thing is an absolute certainty... Pavey Point will be on to Joe Duffy tomorrow complaining about Nidge's assertion that the Travelling Community are a "bunch of savages"...

Surely it's only been a month? When they were fishing the dentist out of the canal they mentioned on the news that it had been a month since he was reported missing.

I would think so too and am pretty sure the RIRA won't feature in season 5. If Dano was alive, Lizzie would be left alive for longer and both would meet up and organise revenge on Nidge. But we already had this story.

Season 5 will feature on Nidge's feud with the travellers, Nidge v Fran (I predict they will have a love/hate relationship to forgive the pun but ultimately will recognise both need each other) and ultimately Nidge v Paulie and/or Terence 'Big Balls'. Season 6 may be a different matter and new storylines could develop which may include the IRA.

As regards Git, I think the IRA knew exactly what he was. Remember Tony hinting about Git getting up to things in clubs. Tony knew Git's form and knew he was probably killed for raping someone as Nidge said. Nidge more or less told Tony the truth and Tony ultimately decided Nidge was more important to him and a better ally than either Git or Dano. Tony may feature for another deal perhaps to get rid of Paulie or Terence? But this may be what season 6 is about.

Agreed, id like to see Tony back in it, Sean Mcginley is a great actor. Loved his quiet but menacing portrayal of Tony.
There's going to be some significance attached to the Git Loughman bone that Fran has. What story angle will come out of this I am not sure. But could Fran frame Nidge for the murder or attempt this if he was cornered by the gardai? Could Fran end up doing a deal with them?

In fairness, he deserves to be locked up for crimes against plausibility for keeping it in his fridge! :D

To be fair, this is a guy who dug up a grave and urinated in it. Keeping a severed finger in his fridge is possibly the least of his depraved acts!

The 'I've a bone to pick with you' line is a bit overused. I enjoyed last night's episode, but the writing is questionable.

I think that is to show that some of these guys never leave the primary school mentality behind. Repeating old unfunny jokes in search of a cheap laugh with their pals. I think its pretty spot on from the writing team.

God, I only remembered that there now!!!

    Fúcking hell!!!

    .

Indeed. I was straining to see the scar, making it more difficult to try and find out when he got it as regards the chronology of events. Ridiculous.

I see again that some people are too busy posting on the thread to take notice of what's happening in the episode with some of the questions being asked.

That, and the fact we seemed to have bred a nation of people with long term memory loss who can't remember anything from a previous season.

That scene was as disturbing as it was bizarre. Surely Noellie will have to come back into the fold at some stage. Cant be having that kind of thing go unpunished!!

I think the story was/is a bit lacking there, Patrick gets arsey because he thinks nidge is slagging off his son about headlice, really weak way to open up the storyline.

Isn't there/wasn't there a gangland feud in north Dublin that claimed several lives and all started when 2 kids had an argument in a playground?

I think we're overestimating how rational some of these characters can be. It only takes a perceived slight for things to kick off and spiral out of control.

There is 'depraved' behaviour and stupid behaviour. The series plays fast and loose with the whole guards v crims stuff.
One minute they have sophisticated, restricting observation going on, then you have an environment where somebody under scrutiny, is so blasé, he keeps the finger of a victim in his fridge.
It is plausibility lapses like that, that continually let it down.

I don't think Fran was being blasé as such. He seemed surprised when he found it in the fridge. Quite possibly he left it in there during one of his poitin binges.

That's my point...he seemed suprised because it suited the storyline. But would a character in his position (knowing he was probably going to be pulled in for the dentist - the cops more or less intimated that they knew he had done it in the station) leave hmself open in that way? I don't think so.

It's simple really...you have to ask yourself; why was he there at all? Nidge tried to KILL him, but he was alright about that was willing to let it go and then started a **** storm for himself (and as pointed out earlier, his wife family and the campsite) because of 'nits'.

It isn't a complaint for the sake of it, just elaborating on a point somebody else made on a television discussion forum.

After all your complaints about every other episode, I wonder why you still watch it.

What was the story with Nidge wasting hrs getting jiggy with Janet? It seemed very unrealistic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

    once.

that was all the same meeting.

Did people genuinely think it was more than one trip ?

very weak start to this series...Fran and Nidges characters seem almost caricatures of themselves..Elmo the tough guy, give me a break!!

I really enjoyed it for what it was - its a fictional programme based on the exploits of Dublin criminals with a load of drama and some great black comedy

I don't understand why people spend so much time nit-picking on the smallest details - just enjoy it lads, there's only 5 episodes left. Its the best thing the RTE have ever commissioned, and kept running with and judging on RTE's record, it may be a long long time before we ever see anything as good, that's home-made again.

True. But they did think he was weak, over at his girlfriend's house. I think the thing is despite all the talk of tracking and planning they are just a bunch of lads trying to kill someone, not a team of highly trained assassins.

In that way it was probably realistic.
