I know there are loads of threads about this but does anyone know a cheap way of doing applied maths on my own. Can't afford the IOE and school unable to do it.
Would buying the book, teaching myself and getting a grind once a month be a reasonable option.
If I study 7 questions and aim at 1 every month I should have the bulk of it done by the end of 5th year and then just revision in 6th year.
Also how are the examples in the book (like would they be good enough to teach yourself)
    Thanks
I personally would not be able to learn Applied Maths at all with my teacher. I often find the examples in the book confusing and awkward and find my teacher's method much more usable.

That being said though, a lot of people do take it on their own and seem to do okay. Personally I think a question a month, wouldn't be realistic. I mean a few of the questions have two chapters based on them (Projectiles - Q3 for example). Then again, maybe it depends on you. I assume you're good at HL Maths and possibly Physics?

It's just manipulating the formula. Just use your algebra rules (e.g. change sides, change operations) to find whatever value it asks you for. So if it asks you for u, in terms of everything else. Change the formula around until you have u on one side of the equals and everything else on the other.

Yes I tried that as you can see from my other pic but that is as far as I can get.

Here's the answers for Q5. Don't know if they're right, but I tried my best.

Here are the answers for Q6, never did this type of question before so I had no clue.

The pic didn't show the answer, here's another :o

Thanks Arnie, your always a great help.
    Always help everyone.
But for the first part of 5. I got the same answer as you, but when I looked at the back of the book it had this even though they said to get in terms of U
    v=c(f'-f) over f'
    ?!?!?!
Since you got the same thing as I had previously I think the back of the book is wrong......
That is why I got confused.

Now I noticed that you and I mostly forgot to multiply the f'(c-u)
when u get that you bring it to the other side and you factorize.
But thanks so much for the others

No problem. The book can be wrong sometimes, I guess we'll never know the right answer until a maths teacher validates it.

Did I get the right answer for the other questions? I'm curious :o

No u got the first one right, its just that you forgot to multiply the f' by c-u in brackets like you did for the second part.
I will let you know in a while for the q.6

You don't always have to multiple the two terms, but I guess in this case you had to and then factorize to isolate the C. Interesting, good thing you spotted that. :)

    Q6.(i)
    l=T^2g over 4pie^2
    (ii)l=2.3

Is anyone else finding maths impossible so far! I know it only first chapter but I just can't do algebra ..

I found maths so hard in the first week, and every time we start a new topic I have no clue ... but then it clicks after a while.

I found the hard questions extremely tough. I spent too much time doing homework. I dropped down to OL. I love Maths so much now :D I could probably pass HL but to me that time is not worth the 25 points.

Ah come on, maths is definitely worth it. The extra 25 points will allow you to drop much harder subjects to OL or aim a little lower for higher level subjects.

The questions aren't that hard, just finished Algebra and have a mega test for it tomorrow.

We got a surprise test for all the year today :( I thought I was good at maths before I sat it...

I agree that the 25 points open up a lot of doors. There is no other subject I could see myself dropping to OL.

In my opinion the questions are hard. I found myself spending hours on end trying to get the answer but still not getting it. It was frustrating.

All in all I think it comes down to personal preference. I value my time over the extra 25 points. You obviously think otherwise.

To those of you who do geography, what book do ye use?

Curious because the book I use was actually cowritten by a geography teacher in my school! :pac:

I actually use notes for geography.

So no book at all then? :o

We had Dynamic Geography but we never used it. The book contains nowhere near enough information for a Leaving Cert answer so it is fairly useless.

Exam Skills by Sue Honan is the only book that you should need, or else your teacher's notes.

Well, maybe my teacher has used the book over the years to make the notes - but the class doesn't use any books, and just the notes he gives out. They're all pretty concise and to the point so I see no issues :D

I prefer note learning than book learning anyway, heck, I don't even have books for any of my subjects.

    Oh wow that's interesting!

We use Horizons, I think that's what it's called anyway :pac:

The book we use is called Horizons and the geography teacher from the other class actually cowrote it so technically they're her notes haha :pac:
