The sense of self entitlement for everything. Irish people think they should have excellent health care, welfare, roads etc. But not have to pay for them. Im sick of hearing about how bad the health system is and in Germany etc. Its amazing in Germany because 10% of your wage goes on health insurance and even then you have to pay for some of your prescription( I paid €5 for a basic prescription even though I paid a **** load in health insurance in Germany and yet its a disgrace you have to pay €2,50 for a prescription here)

Actually this kind of bollocks annoys me. There are only 9 countries in the world with a marginal rate of tax higher than 52%. And none of them come in at 33k.

We also spend more GDP per capita on health than most European countries and we have a younger population.

The problem is not us. It's the waste in the HSE.

Can't stand the cliche that we say that.

    "Undocumented Irish" over there.

    "Illegal immigrants" over here.

I've never actually thought of it like that.

Ability for self delusion as in 'our wonderful education system' etc

Nobody ever says that either. However our education system is in line with the OECD norm, better in most cases.

You obviously don't be listening to our esteemed politicians and teacher unions who like to trot it out on a regular enough basis.

This subject has been done to death OP, every week for the last 5 years there's an identical thread

If you can find that exact quote then link to it.

Most of the complaints here are spurious. However one "cliche" is true. The unhealthy regard for property in Ireland. It's ridiculous how many people think that the present bubble is a good thing despite the recent near collapse of the economy. That's one cliche that's absolutely true.

We also tend to rant about the corrupt leadership and elites but do nothing.

Peoples insistence that every social gathering must be accompanied by copious amounts of alcohol. It seems that No alcohol= no fun.

I love 90% of this country but the begrudgery would piss you off.

God help any business or individual who admits to making money.

Most of these traits are far from exclusively Irish

I dislike the condescending attitude people have about non-fashionable parts of England e.g. the north of England outside of Liverpool/Manchester.

Not so much the politicians, it's the people who think that because we get great exam results, and lots of people go on to thrid level education, we therefore have a great education system. Complete fallacy.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Although it is rife on here, I'm speaking more about in real life when I visit my hometown to see my parents. Lots of bitterness at the first mention of success.

And you do mention it every chance you get. Remind us again how you're a highly qualified culchie, working in a low level admin position in a German investment bank, sorry, sorry, the cutting edge of European finance.

Usually I think the begrudgery thing is overstated. Usually.

My Irish peeve is (some of) the Irish abroad. People tend not to be as enamoured of the GAA shirt wearing drunken antics that some Irish abroad would like to believe. No, they don't think you're all just great lads having the craic and being great fun.

Other than that Irish people are more or less the same as any other people, some nice, some not so much. Mostly nice though.

    I'd say you're a bit of a begrudger yourself.

The notion that 2cm distance between your bonnet and the other car's bumper is a safe distance when going 80kph down a narrow, windy country road.

The notion that anyone driving slower than you is the problem, not the fact that you're 20kph above the speed limit.

The notion that taxes in Ireland are high.

The genuflecting/cap doffing attitude of some Irish towards our former colonial masters

Where's your self respect & dignity FFS?

All well & good peaceful relations etc., long may it continue...but get over the inferiority complex & be proud of who we are & what we've achieved

    1. The way Irish people hate Americans who are proud of their Irish roots. Who cares? I think it's great that we have about 30 million "brothers and sisters" across the pond. Let them call themselves Irish. Let them come to find out about their ancestors. And let them bring their dollars!

    2. Irish tradesmen - such a lazy bunch of feckers. My dad has been doing his house up bit by bit over the last few years. He has decided never to hire Irish handymen/tradesmen again because they just destroy the house whenever they do a bit of work, and they have the "ah shur feckit it's grand" attitude that people have mentioned here already.

He recently went on holiday and got some guys to put some dry lining insulation onto the walls while he was away. When he came back, the work was done, but his house looked like it had been ransacked. Filthy cups everywhere, teabags thrown all over the place, dust, paint, flakes of plaster, bits of builders rubbish everywhere including on his bed. Also, the doors were left unlocked. Anyone could have walked in and cleared the place out. Anyway, his bedroom was such a mess he had to sleep on his couch that night! He'll be going Eastern European from now on. He hired a crowd of them before and they did "some job" on his patio and cleaned the place up afterwards.

    3. Irish women - stop wearing so much makeup. And sort out yer addiction to gossip. And stop bitching about your own friends behind their back!

the only in ireland attitude, about shyte that happens everywhere else in the world

Amen. Racism and begrudgery are pretty much universal traits but this crap is uniquely Irish.

"Where else in the world can somebody say 'I will yeah' and mean 'no'?"

Lots of fcking places. Everybody does sarcasm.

Government incompetence and wastage of 20 billion euro over the last 15 years on "projects and consultants".

The country going mad over €240 euro water charges a year while the €500 million Euro of installation work goes to UK contractors.

Denis O Brien buying a company off NAMA for 30% less than another bidder, getting 110 million debt write off and then getting contracts for 200 million euro.

Each time some new scandal or fcuk up happens the last gets forgotten.

How are the church still involved with children?

This, along with several other phenomena that are not exclusively Irish but let's have a spot of self flagellation/attacking fellow Irish people anyway... as expected.

People need to get over their obsession with "begrudgery" too. The non stop going on about it really looks idiotic. People get bitchy towards people who do well for themselves absolutely anywhere, and sometimes it's not resentment of people doing well for themselves - it's dislike of the person for being a ****.
If you're doing well for yourself too, it's vulgar to boast about it and act as though you're superior.

I do agree the "Shur it'll be grand" thing is quite an Irish trait, but we're getting better IMO.

Referring to the whole of the UK as "England" and to the British as "English".

Brian O'Driscoll being the greatest player in the world.

    The term "non national"...

The idea that there is a greatest sport in the world (hurling followers are especially guilty of this).

Sex with the light switched off (in case Sister Mary is watching...)

Oh and the way Catholicism gets rammed down the throat but if you're an atheist you'd better keep quiet lest someone gets upset.
