So ISIS chopped off another guys head last night. But would something that looks so gruesome actually cause pain to the victim or would the die almost instantly from blood loss?

I imagine it to be quite painful, wouldn't be an instant death unless brain stem was immediately severed.

Its an absolutely barbaric practice. Looking at a picture today its hard to understand how they do it, and whats worse is they're surrounded by children.

There doesn't seem to be as much about it this time as there was in the past though, or is it just me? Around the time of Ken Bigley it seemed to be bigger news

I heard before they tested this back in the days when beheading was all the rage. People were asked to blink as a sign of consciousness. There's reports of people blinking up to 30 seconds.

If they used a sharp sword it would be instant but they used knives and hack away so yeah it would be painful and dragged out more that what's needed.

Like being hanged to death by being dragged up on the rope instead of the sudden drop and the noose breaking the neck.

Apparently, during the French revolution, A doctor asked one of the victims to blink his eyes as many times as possible after the guillotine had done its job!
He managed about 14...

Well it's not like they do it with a guillotine where it's done in one clean motion, some dude sawing at your neck with a knife until your head comes off is a gruesome way to go and I'd imagine it's incredibly painful until the point you die. Plus you might not die immediately either..

There are also reports that Charles I gave a 20 minute speech condemning his executioners after his beheading. Coincidentally, people drank a lot back then.

I can't imagine they take the head off in one clean cut like with a guillotine, they probably have to saw a bit for it to come off. So yes, I would imagine it's pretty damn painful.

Fyi it isn't one clean swipe like you've seen in Game Of Thrones or whatever, I haven't watched any of the videos but from what I've heard it took quite a bit of hacking to get through the spine, with quite a bit of gargled screaming from the victim....

Debunked, as there would not be enough blood or oxygen left in the brain long enough for this to happen. It was all reflex reactions.

When a guillotine is used it was common that the bodies would get up and run around for a few seconds before dropping.

Are they cutting it off slowly or in one go? That would make a huge difference to the pain inflicted. Has anyone actually seen the full video?

Agreed but I imagine the carotid artery would be severed rather quickly causing a swift death

Whilst a pretty gruesome question, I can't help but admit I have often wondered this myself in the past. Unfortunately very few survivors of beheading to recount the experience.

That's what people forget about these scummers in ISIS or the Mexican drug cartels. These beheadings are not what we would always imagine.

When most people imagine beheading, we would think of the guillotine or the sinister, hooded executioner wielding a huge sword or axe. The victim has their head restrained or placed upon a block. The razor-sharp blade of the guillotine slams down with incredible force. The executioner swings the sword/axe down with all their might. The head is (usually) severed in one, quick, fluid motion. Death is instantaneous and (relatively; allegedly) painless. That is the "classic" image of beheading from days of yore.

Nowadays, however, beheading is as much about instilling horror and terror in others than it is about actually killing the victim. And to instil said horror, a slow, gruesome death is the way that these animals in ISIS/drug cartels operate. For sure, beheading is gruesome. But the horror of the quick beheading is diluted by the merest fact that it is quick. Blink an eye, it's over. The victim does not appear to suffer and the horror is limited by the thought of "At least they didn't suffer much".

With modern beheadings, they are done in a slow, deliberate manner. Videos often show the blood and final screams/whimpers of the unfortunate victims. This is absolutely sickening, horrifying and is exactly what these subhumans want to happen; instil terror and horror. The visceral and slow nature of these beheadings makes for terrifying viewing to normal people.

Judging from the screams, whimpers, gurgling and moaning of the victims in those videos... yes, it is a painful, agonising death. And it by no means happens quickly. Victims can linger for minutes if the cut is not completed fully.

At least with the guillotine and the medieval beheading, it was quick (unless the executioner had poor aim), but largely it was far, far quicker than the atrocity of these modern beheadings.

In another 19th century test, scientists asked subjects to indicate they were experiencing pain by bleeding out of their severed head. All those tested bled.

When the bird did not die, Mr. Olsen, who was surprised, decided to continue to care permanently for Mike, feeding him a mixture of milk and water via an eyedropper; he was also fed small grains of corn.

His crowing, though, consisted of a gurgling sound made in his throat. Mike also spent his time attempting to preen and peck for food with his neck.[2]

It all depends on where they started to cut, how sharp the instrument they used was and how long it took them to do the deed.

Once the carotid artery is severed then there will be no pain as the brain is instantly starved of blood and oxygen causing death.

A quick cut with a very sharp knife would mean very little to no pain at all. While gruesome it would be a quicker and easier death for people on death row. Not that I would agree with the practice of the death penalty anyway.
