Bad luck, RR. Don't rule out DCM yet though - not without a professional opinion at least. Definitely did the right thing stopping when you did.

Unlucky, mind that leg, hamstrings are a bitch to heal

Tough Break RR, Hoping you get it sorted.

Bummer RR. Good decision to pull the plug. Take it handy and make sure you get treatment.

Sorry to hear about yesterday Red. Once you get a twinge in the hammer there's no other logical thing to do other than stop. Hopefully it'll sort itself out in time for the DCM.

Tough luck RR, things all seemed dandy on the start line. :(:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭RedRunner

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I thought the weekend couldnt get any worse but had to do some heavy work in the garden yesterday and now i've hurt my back too! It never rains but it pours!

I've decided no more races before DCM. If I take two weeks off now that gives me 5 weeks to get a decent block of training done with a two week taper. If I can get three 20 mile runs in in that 5 weeks I think I'll be ok for DCM, with revised goal , yet to be decided.

If that all goes to pot, I think I'll abandon DCM, take a bit of a break and look for an early Spring Marathon instead.

Thanks D,yeah, was feeling good on the start line and felt I had a good time in me. My easy running in the previous week or so had been issue free but hadnt done a hard session since the HM on the Bank Hol so it wasn't fully tested I suppose. I probably just needed to give it more time and another couple of weeks of easy running.

Hopefully the rest will sort the hamstring out for you R, you had been motoring so well. The plan to get to DCM looks good, fingers crossed it works out well for you.

So as it turns out , the hamstring is the least of my worries right now.
Went to work yesterday and was suffering with the back all day. Had a really poor nights sleep because of it too and found it difficult to get into standing position this morning when I was getting up.

Decided to head to the Doctor's to try and get it sorted quickly rather than waiting for it to sort itself out. Diagnosis: Prolapsed Disc:(

He gave me a difene injection there and then and I'm on anti-inflammatories and painkillers and off work for next couple of weeks. MRI to be scheduled also. In a way I'm glad about the MRI because at least I'll find out once and for all what is going on with my back. I've been dealing with back pain a long time now and trying to manage it as best I could. It'll be good to find out once and for all what is actually the problem. Afraid of my life though that someone will say, you need to give up that running lark!

    RR,

Things are usually never as bad as they seem...

I had an MRI in Santry after DCM 13, basically the DR that checked me over said that there was damage to the cartilage in the right knee and as a result to give up on the running.

As you know I was lined up beside you at Frank Duffy on Saturday morning, and came away with a decent time...

Things are usually never as bad as they seem...

I got an MRI scan on the 6th August last year. I was diagnosed with a torn calf muscle. I was still able to run (and PB) in the Chicago Marathon which takes place two weeks before Dublin. So all hope is not lost and you have far more miles run than I had. Keep the chin up ;)

Sorry to hear that. Hope you do get to the root of your back issues.

Anecdotally, I've heard of a few people who had serious disc issues that with time and patience sorted themselves out with only conservative treatment.

One of our Sunday-morning running companions was telling me that it happened to her and she was really incapacitated. For her the cure was three months with no sitting down -- only standing / walking or lying down. She's fine now, running, did DCM last year and aiming for this year's too.

Things seem to be going on forever when you have them, but when you look back on this period from some successful running time in the future, it probably won't seem like so long.

    Sorry to hear that, RR.

Me too with the prolapsed disc confirmed by MRI (as you will remember from me yammering on about it at the time and ever since!) Physio and doc recommended conservative treatment and it improved over a 4-6 week period last winter, to the point that I'm back to "normal" albeit try to be very careful about bending the spine. No point in being too pessimistic at the moment - as you say the MRI will show what's really going on. I'd get it sooner rather than later if you can. Best of luck with it.

Sorry to hear that Red. I've suffered with back problems on and off for the last 10 years. It got worse when I retired from hurling and stopped regular exercise. The weight began to rise and flare ups came far more often. Following a scan my specialist told me that the bottom 4 vertebrae were fairly mushed! It was only when I began running that things started to improve. I had no back trouble at all. So keep the chin up let things settle and ease back into it. Don't rule Dublin out yet.

Yes I remember sharing back stories alright. Got an appointment for Thursday morning so don't have to wait long. I'd certainly favour conservative treatment over anything too intrusive.

Cheers Bahanaman. Great that you were able to recover from that. Mushed vertebrae sounds so permanent! Certainly not ruling Dublin out yet .I'll accept doing it for fun even at this stage.

Sorry to hear about the back RR, i echo what has been said already. I thought my running was finished with this time last year with my knee, but through determination & some thickness i made it back. Have no doubt you'll do the same.

How are you feeling today R?
I was so very sorry to read of all your woes since Saturday, I really hope things get sorted out for you as soon as possible.

Slight improvement O. Thanks so much for asking. Been for the MRI today so will wait and see what the verdict is. My Doc should have results by Monday. Would you believe it but I had cubicle #13 today to change into my gown in! FFS!
I have a CD of images but they mean nothing to me. Was comparing them to some internet searched images but sure what was the point of that(Stupid me), I'll just have to wait and see what the professionals think. Still in a lot of pain and mobility is fairly restricted but it's better than it was two days ago.

Diazepam is great though for a good night's sleep!;)

    injury update:

    Hamstrings- All good
Back - improving if a little slowly. Slightly more mobility with each day that passes. Walked three miles last night with no resultant major pain ,just some discomfort but thought the exercise would help. Plus I'm piling on the pounds here with my comfort eating!

Results in from MRI and had to go back to doctor today to "discuss" results ..also code for " that'll be another €50 please" my usual doc wasn't there so saw another from same practice.

In summary there is some wear and tear of L5-S1 which seems to be causing the problem and I'm being referred to a neurosurgeon at SSC who specialises in spine. I had a choice of SSC or Mater so chose SSC because I thought they might have a better understanding of my sporting interest. So just have to wait for appointment and take it easy until then. I'm seeing Even the chance of doing DCM slip away from me now and am genuinely worried about my running future if this disc issue is a degenerative one that is worsened by excessive exercise like marathon training. Hopefully it won't be that serious but just can't help having those thoughts. It's going to be mentally tortuous wait now until the consultation.

No idea really...could be a week, 10 days maybe? I have a number to ring to chase them up if I have to. All I know so far is the name of the guy I'm being referred to.

Good luck with appointment. It may well be a case of learning to manage it. Can you swim with this injury? Might keep you sane.
