Thanks D. Knowing your inside knowledge of this problem I will give that serious thought. The 26-27 was just an arbitrary figure I picked would more likely go slower if I do decide to do the park run. Interestingly my back feels the best it has all week today. Is that a coincidence? Not sure. I'll sleep on the idea of park run and decide in morning anyway.

As long as we're not reading in the morning at 9:35am about how you broke 20mins for the 5k:D

    Well done!

I find the same with sitting. My back is 90% perfect, but after a busy day at work yesterday it didn't feel sore, but it sort of felt like my lower back had contracted a bit and was tight.

I'm trying to get up and stretch (secretly, in the store room so people don't think I'm very odd) every 40 minutes or so, and I'm doing that lying down thing we were talking about. Can you get up and stretch at work etc? You don't want to undo all your improvements by being back at the office.

Thanks Helen. Yes I'm wandering around every so often to get off the chair and getting a few odd looks when doing my stretching.

At night I'm doing the Mckenzie push ups, sphinx, the cat, and the technique you told me about too.

Haha ha. Now that would be the sandbag of the century!

No. I'd much rather be reporting another sub 4 marathon on Oct 27th! ;-)........unlikely even as that sounds right now.

3.5 hours on a flight to Bucharest was not good for the oul Cilla Black. Painkillers taken and that took the edge off it. Very stiff afterwards and had to do some stretching to get it back to being ok.

In terms of running...well your probably all going to give out to me now but here goes nothing.

Hotel ,smack in the middle of Bucharest so had no idea of where to run as it is very built up so opted for the health club in hotel .Don't normally like the dreadmill but went for it anyway in the optimistic thought of it will probably loose the back up a bit. Started off nice and gentle (Im working in km now cos that was how it was set up so all a bit foreign to me!) at 6km/hr or 10min/km pace...I think...and gentle ramped it every so often as the back was feeling ok. What transpired was an 8km progression run in 52 mins ish at avg pace of 6:39min/km. Felt good to get that session done but I may regret it later????

Nice swim in the pool afterwards. As AMK has said I'm a bit crazy at times but there you go.

Interesting things I noticed. Feels like you are running faster on a treadmill than outdoors on the road and I ran mostly on the forefoot, more easily than I would outside. Anyone have that experience before?

Anyway I'll go sit in the naughty corner now and let you know how I feel tomorrow.Fantastic Hotel.Great facilities, brilliant staff. Cheap as chips over here compared to rest of Europe.

I think if you're not in any pain when you run and you build it up very slowly you'll be grand. Fingers crossed for you :)

Plus the treadmill is much lower impact so less wear and tear. I did a good bit of rehabilitation on the 'mill and/or grass myself before venturing back on the road, if I remember correctly. What kind of stretching are you doing? Safe for the back?

Principally, stretches/exercises specifically for bulging disc like Mackenzie push ups etc.

So last few days have helped me make some major decisions:

    1. I will not run Dublin HM tomorrow
    2. I will not run DCM 2014
    3. I will take a couple of weeks off running totally.
    4. I hope to target a Spring marathon maybe Tralee(march) or Limerick (May).

    So the rationale......

The day after the Treadmill run I was a bit stiff in the calves which was all fine but had pain in my ankles. Not sure why, not used to running on a treadmill or could be to do with the travelling. My ankles/feet react strangely to air travel ie they swell up. Maybe the combination of treadmill and that caused the issue. Wasnt really pain as such but the sort of thing that when you start on your feet initially you feel like you are recovering from a recent ankle twist and are just recovering but it subsides after a bit of walking. Now that I'm back on Irish soil I have to say it is much better now.

The back is about 98% at moment so that is not a real issue. I got really bad news from a good friend when I was away that his 8yr old son is extremely ill and this has also knocked my entusiasm back a bit .

Also , still waiting on the Spine guy to set appointment date. So with all of these things aligning I felt that a DCM attempt even to just get around would inevitably just end up as an unpleasant experience for me so for that reason I'm out.( as they say on Dragon's Den :D)

As it happens my annual Cardiac Structural MRI is now due also so I've a lot to think about medically before I launch into a big training program again.

So if I get the all clear from the Spine guy to continue running I will attempt to build back up a good base over the Winter, do a bit of XC, find my running mojo again and then go for the assault on 3:30 in the marathon. I plan to also go back and do the core owrk I have done previously.

If things change I'll let you know but for meantime I will also take a bit of a break from updating here but will be reading other's logs when I can.

    The next gig.....You'll see!

Tough decisions made there R but undoubtedly the correct ones.
Building back up for spring sounds like a super idea. I look forward to following your successful assault on that sub 3:30.

Yes, good luck, RR. Tough decision but with all that going on it looks like the right one. I'll join you on that <3:30 quest in the spring, hopefully. :)

Best of luck with everything RR, tough decision to make but I'm sure it's a weight off your shoulders since you decided.

Really sorry to hear it's come to this Red. I thought you'd turned a corner over the last fortnight but only you know how things really are. At least the decision is made now anyway and you can focus on the next target ie a healthy marathon!

First run today since Bucharest Treadmill. Back has been grand for the most part since but today I didn't have to take any painkillers. I won't lie, it's not perfect but it feels much better when I'm moving so thought I'd chance a little run while one of the kids was football training. I had to drive him there anyway so popped off for a short trot while he was training.

It felt great and although I have lost some fitness and feeling a bit heavier(because I am a bit heavier) the legs felt strong though. Really enjoyed it and it was good for me to get those endorphins again and others as I have not been easy to live with recently!

3.35 mile @8:51 Was hitting 8:15 pace for the last bit.

Got confirmed appointment with the back consultant (neurosurgeon) for October 9th so not long to wait on the expert view.

    Saturday 27th September

Touch of manflu but I braved it and got up to do the park run with one of the RR Juniors. Paced him to a 27:56 pb of nearly two minutes and really enjoyed the atmosphere of the St Annes PR 1st Birthday celebrations.

He came 1st in his age category JM10:D (We'll ignore the fact that he was the only one in his age category)

3.04 miles in 27:56. Last mile in 8:25.

Delighted to read of good news on boardsie results from Berlin.

Ha ha...what took you so long? I don't know what was worse, that or watching the Dublin ladies throw away a ten point lead!

At least we'll be playing Champions league this week.:D
