you would do it out of basic courtesy, wouldn't you?

A relation of mine had her handbag snatched in Madrid and after a bit of shouting she got the attention of some building site workers who ran after the guy and caught him, and managed to get the bag back.

I would like to think the same would happen here, but I doubt it somehow.

Were they Irish construction workers ?

My point is that if there had been an armed raid in McDonalds, on the night that the OP's phone was stolen, the cctv footage would not have gone missing... IMHO

What has that point got to do with your Madrid story?

    Blizzard conditions in Galway ?

    Blizzard conditions in Galway ?

    Dunno.

All doors and windows in the county are locked and curtains drawn as flocks and herds of Mayo people pass through the place on their way to Limerick.

The crime rate has quadroupled here in the last six hours and property prices have plummeted.

I have sympathy for the OP because she was f**ked over twice in this case, firstly by the prick that stole her phone, and secondly by the people that were supposed to be investigating the theft..

that is a lie straight from hell.

Would anyone care to explain how that could happen?

People like you make me happy! I was told by the manager that she would download the footage for me straight away, I asked her 4 times and the garda did too, it shouldnt have made a difference when I reported it to the gaurds because had she done her job right in the first place the footage wouldn't have been lost.

Something tells me that they're trying to hide something from the Gardai because on first request she "couldn't find me" I told her to search again, its ridiculous..she basically tried to tell me I wasn't in McDonalds that night. Within 20 minutes she was calling me again telling me that she had found me and told me you could see the guy taking to phone and his face was very clear.
The people who were supposed to investigate the theft were the Gardaí, whom the op declined to tell. Few shop owners are going to go to the bother of downloading cctv without a request from the Gardaí.

Actually, according to the Gardai, it was theft on McDonalds premisses and THEY should have been the one to report it to the gardai straight away, obviously I should have as well but I wasn't in Galway, big error on my behalf too, I know that.

It's not really part of the McDonalds job description though is it "investigate theft"

Let's not forget that (s)he left the phone down somewhere and walked off, it wasn't robbed without some (unfortunate) silliness help on his own part :(

I definitely would! I handed in a lost jacket yesterday that had a phone and car keys in the pocket. I know how it feels to loose something like that and I know for certain that the person who lost it would be delighted today that some arrse didn't find themselves a comfy warm jacket and new phone. It's all about good karma people! I hope the priick that stole my phone has the same thing happen to him, knackerr.

"the person who stole my phone"

Yes this is true but a more accurate representation of the truth is "the person who took my phone after I foolishly left it on a table"

Read my post a page or so back about leaving my ipad on the train. Amazingly (and I am so lucky) I got it back. Had I not got it back I would NOT be saying my ipad was stolen. I would be saying I left it on the train and someone obv took it :(

I empathise with you, it's **** and yeah I hope bad karma goes their way but jesus christ man accept responsibility and move on.

Here's the stupid thing I did with my ipad. I am mega careful with it now.

I left my ipad on the train a couple of weeks ago. Myself and the irish rail guy I was dealing with think it travelled up and down on the line all day. :) It was handed in at 7pm that evening.

Myself and ir guy were in shock it came back to me. I like to think it was my big "hippy type slogan" sticker on it that it brought it back to me :D

I texted your man who handed it in asking for his address so I could send him something small, he didn't want anything "just hoped someone would do same for him"

I didn't mean to come across as cheeky or whatever else half of the people posting on here are getting hot headed about.

I know it's completely my fault for leaving the damn phone on the counter, I wasn't out that night so I wasn't drunk I had just rolled in mid night shift for food and stupidly left my phone on the counter.

The only thing that annoyed me was the manager failing to download the correct footage, that's all! I asked her 4 times for god sake. I'm hardly blaming McDonalds for not supplying 20 body guards to stand around me while I got my food and make sure I don't forget stuff.

I'm pissed off enough about the phone without people getting worked about something they would hate happen to them.

chill out people, it wouldn't kill to be nice about something, even if it is over the internet.

and to those who tried to help, thank you! it's appreciated.

    Case closed.

Just as a general comment why do people assume that others are less honest than they are themselves? If I saw someone dropping money on the street without realising it I would draw their attention to it or go after them to return it. Or if I found a phone or a laptop on the train I would hand it in.

I expect 100% of people on this thread would do the same. Unless anyone wants to say they would keep the money or the phone.

I would absolutely draw someones attention to it/return to owner.

But there are definitely some people out there who wouldn't.

Human nature. "We" think we're better than we are. There's quite a good book about similar things by Zimbardo.

I'd like to think I'd do the same - but we all have a little bit of prejudice in our back pockets. Maybe its people with ginger hair or maybe its Bankers, or whatever. I think that anyone able to rationalise keeping it would probably do so.

100%, heaven on Earth then :)

In research 95% of people said they would do the honest thing. But they said that they thought less than 50% of other people would. Isn't that strange?

    That IS funny!

I was actually going to say in my post; I'd say it is 50/50 whether s/one would keep or give back!
