I'm pretty sure teachers would still be required to be present. I don't think many driving or first-aid instructors are qualified to look after 30 or so kids.

I'm not a teacher hater btw, I just know what their general reaction would be to being asked to work an extra 2-3 weeks per year.

When I did transition year, we did a few driving courses(a lot of common scemce stuff) and first aid courses. We were always left with just the instructors.

My daughters birthday is the 28th of August and she will probably be going back to school on her birthday every year.
When I was in school it was always the 1st of September unless that was a weekend and then you'd start on the next Monday. Never started in August, not even the 31st.

We're not so bad. We're FETAC level 6 teachers anyway. Take up your broom Grasshopper, and strike me with it! ;)

Horayyyy 2-3 extra weeks pay...where can I sign up...

It might make up for the extra 2 weeks imposed on me from croke park and the pay cut too!

Thanks MynameisURL, I know you got my back.

    Yeah, it's great!

No it's not, it means commuting will be a nightmare.

God. All those psycho moms with 4x4s and minibuses for their 2 kids pulling up everywhere and pulling out of everywhere... it's gonna be hell!

It already is. I started leaving the house 10 minutes earlier this week to beat the congestion. So far it's working.

I don't know why they just can't transport their kids to school by telepathy.

I directly pass 4 schools on my commute, 1 has been back since Monday. The other 3 are primary schools though, so wouldn't expect them to be back til Monday. I expect a lot more will be back tomorrow.

Primary school I was always off til September.

Secondary school was always back at the end of August. First year was a day before the rest of the school (the last Wednesday of August), to get timetables, find base classrooms, meet classmates, meet teachers, be shown the way around the school and so on. The next day was a half day for all the school and the Friday was a full half day (Fridays were actually early finish days). The following Monday was business as usual.

Current scheme is a joke and a throwback to the days of helping out on the farms during the summer.

It's no throwback, 1000's of students still work on the farm during the summer and are vital in managing the heavy summer work load.

Students and teachers deserve every day they have off anyway. It would be totally counter productive for both to extend the school year and is only suggested by parents who look on teachers as baby sitters and complain when they have to organise their own child minding or else teacher bashers who have no clue what they are talking about.

If for no other reason its worth having the schools off for the drastic reduction in traffic also.

Should probably have mentioned that I'm not a teacher in the post. I do often regret not going down that route but the money is gone is crap now (not that it was ever good) and its a very tough job so even though I'd only have to do a hdip to teach its not something that would be on my radar.

Little Sunny Dayz was back in primary school today. Has been back early the last number of years. It is handy though because he has finished up a bit earlier for his summer hols the last 2 years and that suited us. We even went on a holiday this year as soon as he got his break for the last week in June and it was so much cheaper than if we had even gone a week later.

Waaaay back in my day (1990's mainly) I don't think we ever grazed the doors of a school in August. I think the first I ever heard of it was with my younger sister.

So is the answer that a small minority of schools always chose to open in august but now its mandatory for all schools to open on the same day ?

I think they get windows durign which the have to reopen.

As far as I recall, every primary school in the country has to be in session between something like 180 and 185 days in the year. How they do this is usuall up to the schools themselves, within reason. They can start holidays a day or two earlier and return a day or two earlier if they wish, or move a day or two from easter holidays to summer.

My husband's starting next Monday. He's in Adult Education. First year of his course but no 'getting to know each other' for the Over 18s.

Oh, there'll be plenty of 'getting to know each other'.
Just wait as he'll be home late some nights from 'the library' or 'group work' with those hot and horny female students...

Ours go back early so they can take a secret week off in May.
So many parents were pulling their kids out in May for family holidays, trying to avoid the peak holiday costs by the operators.
The school just gave up & relented.

No its not. It relates to a deal with schools/teachers to allow exam students to have a quite school in which to sit their exams. Of course no real need for this and the benefit was that teachers got 3 months holidays.
