My lil sis started yesterday. She's starting secondary though. First Years are in a week early so they can get to know each other before the madness starts.

My husband's starting next Monday. He's in Adult Education. First year of his course but no 'getting to know each other' for the Over 18s.

I started Secondary School in August 1988 and every year the new school year began at the 26/27 August. So it's been around a while.

It all comes under the standardised school year that came in a few years back.

If it was up to me I'd give about half the current holidays for secondary school students. Current scheme is a joke and a throwback to the days of helping out on the farms during the summer.

I saw a boy last Friday 22nd in secondary school uniform. That's the earliest I've ever seen.

I was never back before the 1st of September. I was born at the end of August and never suffered school on my birthday!

Its throwing out the rhythm of the year, schools should got back in September or at a pinch very late August i.e the 28/29 it just feels wrong otherwise.

Role on an Indian summer the first week in September.

I don't know why they don't go to school all year round and shorten the whole shooting gallery by about two or three years. That way people wouldn't have to start the whole school rigmarole while they're still practically babies and keep the whole tedious game up until they're nearly 18.

The traffic during school term is dreadful. It added 30mins to my driving commute time. Even cycling is a nightmare. The behaviour of parents behind the wheel dropping their lazy sh!ts off.

    - U turns everywhere
    - Parking in or blocking the exit of my apartment block
    - Doors flinging open in the middle of traffic
    - Absolutely no regard for traffic lights
    - Rinse and repeat in the evening

    And no-one gives a sh1t.

Would be no bad thing if schools went on for a extra 2 or 3 weeks and thought such things as driving,First aid and basic social studies as examples.
Would be better for students as they might come out more rounded from it.. I cant say i liked school but do it right and it could really steer this country to better times.

It means the Dublin traffic will be bloody insane again and my commute will increase by about 20-30 minutes. The summer is a great time for me. Almost always get a seat on the bus when I take it and get across the city quite quickly. Cycling the same, get into work quicker when the roads are quieter. Now we're back to Mom dropping little Sorcha and Fiachra to school in the 4x4 and making my mornings on the N11 hell until next June. Yay...

This. All joking aside, the idea of extending the school year just to make life more palatable for adults is a **** one. If you're goign to extend it, extend it for practical reasons.

Things like Driving and First-Aid are going to require specialist instructors, so it'll be the teacher-haters who are going to have the stroke.

I used to live in a cul de sac with a school at the top of the road. One time some soccer mom decided to stop in the middle of the road and have a chat with another mom. Everyone was parked all over so i couldn't get around her. I gave her about 1 minute before i beeped. She ignored me. I did it again. They both turned around and gave me the dirtiest look and continued. I then yelled at them and she finally moved on. They think they have every right to break the rules of the road just cause they have kids in school

    Sorry!

I'm pretty sure teachers would still be required to be present. I don't think many driving or first-aid instructors are qualified to look after 30 or so kids.

I'm not a teacher hater btw, I just know what their general reaction would be to being asked to work an extra 2-3 weeks per year.

When I did transition year, we did a few driving courses(a lot of common scemce stuff) and first aid courses. We were always left with just the instructors.

My daughters birthday is the 28th of August and she will probably be going back to school on her birthday every year.
When I was in school it was always the 1st of September unless that was a weekend and then you'd start on the next Monday. Never started in August, not even the 31st.

It already is. I started leaving the house 10 minutes earlier this week to beat the congestion. So far it's working.

I directly pass 4 schools on my commute, 1 has been back since Monday. The other 3 are primary schools though, so wouldn't expect them to be back til Monday. I expect a lot more will be back tomorrow.

Primary school I was always off til September.

Secondary school was always back at the end of August. First year was a day before the rest of the school (the last Wednesday of August), to get timetables, find base classrooms, meet classmates, meet teachers, be shown the way around the school and so on. The next day was a half day for all the school and the Friday was a full half day (Fridays were actually early finish days). The following Monday was business as usual.

It's no throwback, 1000's of students still work on the farm during the summer and are vital in managing the heavy summer work load.

Students and teachers deserve every day they have off anyway. It would be totally counter productive for both to extend the school year and is only suggested by parents who look on teachers as baby sitters and complain when they have to organise their own child minding or else teacher bashers who have no clue what they are talking about.

If for no other reason its worth having the schools off for the drastic reduction in traffic also.

Should probably have mentioned that I'm not a teacher in the post. I do often regret not going down that route but the money is gone is crap now (not that it was ever good) and its a very tough job so even though I'd only have to do a hdip to teach its not something that would be on my radar.

Little Sunny Dayz was back in primary school today. Has been back early the last number of years. It is handy though because he has finished up a bit earlier for his summer hols the last 2 years and that suited us. We even went on a holiday this year as soon as he got his break for the last week in June and it was so much cheaper than if we had even gone a week later.

Waaaay back in my day (1990's mainly) I don't think we ever grazed the doors of a school in August. I think the first I ever heard of it was with my younger sister.

No seat on the bus this morning, mainly secondary and a few primary school kids with their parents.Miss the space and tranquility of yesterdays bus already, will be even worse when the colleges are back.

So is the answer that a small minority of schools always chose to open in august but now its mandatory for all schools to open on the same day ?
