Have you ever asked for a pay rise, I've done it couple times in my current job. I told my boss I would be moving on if nothing happened in the near future. Seemed to work.

I'd love to but I work in the public sector, so no such luxury unfortunately.

Well no, I am on probation still. And... Doesn't everyone get a pension? But yeah I'm paying enough into it anyway.

Always highlight how much better you are than the person on the closest wage to you.

Everyone gets a state pension... if that still exists in the next 20yrs or so..

However, its optional to have other pension funds..

Not in the public sector it's not.

Then you don't need to ask for a pay rise.

Pat your boss on the back before asking. Will work a treat.

I'm private sector, if I didn't get my raise I'd move on. I left my last job for the promotion and higher wage.

You think a public servant cannot have a private pension?

If my pay didn't start so low, then I'd be with you on the point you're trying to make. Plus my service restarted when I changed jobs.

I didn't say anything about a private pension. I said it's not optional to pay into your public sector pension.

Good for you. How long were you at that job when you asked for a pay rise?

If you're a contractor then you're not a public servant.

Well don't worry take solice in the fact public sector workers generally receive higher wages than their private sector compadres. Which you will likely benefit from in the future.

The poster you quoted wasn't talking about public sector pensions?!!

Ive never asked or persued an increase in pay unless I could show that I could find another employer who was willing to pay me the salary I wanted. If my employer wasnt willing to give me the increase I wanted then Id move on to an employer who would.

I'd take me 5 years to get to earn what someone in the same position in private sector earns, so there is no solice. I won't be in this job 5 years.

Just be careful with this, it could backfire.

Yes a few times, but each time I already had a better offer elsewhere yet wanted to stay.

I have twice and got it both times. With the rise came more respect as well!

Those of you who asked, did you wait for a review or just bring it up?

I sent my manager an email explaining why I thought I was underpaid. He then asked to have a meeting with me where I explained my situation. Got an ok pay rise by year end (13%) and 2k bonus but my base level of salary was still well below what I should be on. I've been told I'll get a good increase at year end, if it's not enough I'll look elsewhere.

Where I worked didn't have any protocols for individual pay claims but it still didn't stop wage rises (thanks Union reps!). I don't know what rate I started on but I found a payslip from March 1978 for £42 per week gross - £2184 pa. I finished on €96500 and never had to personally ask for a pay rise once.
