Asking for a pay rise.

Have you ever asked for a pay rise, I've done it couple times in my current job. I told my boss I would be moving on if nothing happened in the near future. Seemed to work.

Everyone gets a state pension... if that still exists in the next 20yrs or so..

However, its optional to have other pension funds..

I'm private sector, if I didn't get my raise I'd move on. I left my last job for the promotion and higher wage.

I didn't say anything about a private pension. I said it's not optional to pay into your public sector pension.

Well don't worry take solice in the fact public sector workers generally receive higher wages than their private sector compadres. Which you will likely benefit from in the future.

Ive never asked or persued an increase in pay unless I could show that I could find another employer who was willing to pay me the salary I wanted. If my employer wasnt willing to give me the increase I wanted then Id move on to an employer who would.

I'd take me 5 years to get to earn what someone in the same position in private sector earns, so there is no solice. I won't be in this job 5 years.

I sent my manager an email explaining why I thought I was underpaid. He then asked to have a meeting with me where I explained my situation. Where I worked didn't have any protocols for individual pay claims but it still didn't stop wage rises (thanks Union reps!). I don't know what rate I started on but I found a payslip from March 1978 for £42 per week gross - £2184 pa. I finished on €96500 and never had to personally ask for a pay rise once.
