Just merely curious, after looking at that thread about cyclists breaking red lights...

Looking at LiveLeaks... there are COUNTLESS videos of people in Russia that use dashcams, mainly for insurance purpose - aside from vehicle accidents, often get people trying their luck faking being hit by cars.

Does anyone here use them ? And if so, or not, why ?

I have one. I mainly use it to upload videos of myself singing folk rock classics from scenic beauty spots.

I bought one after the Chelyabinsk meteor videos emerged. Was a cheap one off ebay. Couldn't get the thing working properly. Threw it out last week.

A dashcam to record falling meteors was one of the most ridiculous impulse purchases I've ever made.

I was insured on a 225Bhp car, no insurance company would insure me apart from xsdirect (under 30 years old). The excess was something like €3000. I had a dashcam on that as I would be fecked if I crashed.

I think everyone should have a dashcam. You know yourself. Your word versus theres. So these little cameras can stop all that.

My dad is retired now but he worked as a driver for donkey's years and the amount of things he has experienced or seen during his job is mental. We're talking about people reversing into the vehicle behind screaming "you rear-ended me!!!", people jumping out in front of cars blatantly trying to sue  Ahhh I could go on.

I was in a car accident a few weeks back and I wish I had one. The fúcking shíte I have to do now in terms of statements for insurance and all the other bull, if I had a cam it would be clear what happened.

Cameras and memory are getting cheaper all the time, eventually everyone will have one I'd say.

I would like to have one. I reckon the amount of bad driving that I see every week would be enough content for a TV3 documentary.

Recently got one, but have yet to 'permanently' install it. Am not sure if I am missing something, but need to turn it on/off at the start/end of each journey and disconnect the GPS aerial ( is not built in ) when removing it from the mount might mean it ends up in the 'gadget drawer' sooner rather than later!!

These things are getting quite popular, particularly with the motorbicyclists. The GoPro Hero range is much praised. I go through some days of much wanting, and other days of much not giving a rattlin'. I still don't know - maybe Christmas?? :pac:

Have all the pieces to make this this up during the weekend if I get some time.

Looks like it gives good results and the lens is well away from the main box so it should be pretty discreet. It also powers on when you turn the ignition so it's pretty much set and forget.

I've a helmet cam I use on the bike and mount it on the dash in the car.

Got it after a friend (on his bike) was ploughed by a driver coming out of a side road and, with the aid of his two passengers, tried to make out it was my friend's fault - they even went so far as to make false statements.

When he was interviewed by the Guards in hospital he gave his own statement and the Guard, naturally enough, pointed out that what he was saying was at odds with what the three in the car were saying - he said his helmet cam would back up what his version. Thankfully it was still on his helmet which was bagged up and in the locker beside the bed.

Guard took the camera and long story short - driver was done for careless driving.

    After that I decided they were a have-to-have, rather than a nice-to-have.

Don't know if I like the idea of being recorded when I drive! Would hate to see the look on my face if I got into a crash. ☺

I think you can set it for only the 'front' camera to record. Have yet to play around with it much, am assuming that once I hook it up to the cigar lighter socket permanently that it would automatically turn on and start recording.

Looks easy in the video, although the guy in the video didn't have a 2 year old moving pieces or trying to stick them up his nose....

TV3 would probably just end up showing the good driving.

I have one. It was an expensive model. I use it on every journey.
Gadgets like Dashcams and GPS will be standard issue in cars in a few years imo.

I'd get one if they were a little bit stealthier and more integrated. I haven't looked in a while but when I did look they all seem to be big lumps that you suction-cup to your windscreen. I don't like having a load of bells and whistles on my windscreen like that, feels like I'm homer simpson baking cupcakes in his in-car oven while driving down the road.

Some of them are only little lumps now, but I know what you mean. It is the 'automation' of it that I would like most, once you can just set it up and leave it and have it turn on, start recording and turn off when you start/stop driving. I am sure that is how most of them work, if you connect them up properly.

Might put mine up on adverts !!

A little bit stealthier, I've one that sends out a BIG red signal ~ do people see it? No, it still has to be pointed out to them, it's in front of the mirror and whilst I see it a mile away, no one else does.

And a couple of years ago on Grafton street shooting a docu early on a Sunday morning, big kick ass camera on a tripod, battery and sound guy, director and assistant and a group of people just walked right into us as if we here not there, so I really don't think you need to worry about more stealth form the general public. :)

    I've one, worth every penny.

Some lunatic was tailgating me for a few miles one day, trying to overtake on a busy narrow, winding road, did my best to let him by but the road was very busy and didn't have many straight stretches or a hard shoulder.

Finally he did take me over and then he slammed on his brakes causing me to hit him. Cops called, I said nothing about the camera. Him out of his car barking at me in his language. Me staying put.

Cops came, showed the video to them and the look on yer man's face was priceless.
Insurance paid out no bother, cop signed the documents right there.
