Supermack's has to remove signage in Temple Bar

Is this a step too far? After all, it's only a sign. It's not like the whole shop front was altered.

Is the government being too invasive here?

I think they are sticking their noses in where they're not welcome, however I do agree that a certain standard has to be maintained in the Temple Bar area, as it is one of the very few nice places in our Fair City.

I agree with the council. We should be protective of these types of areas. They important for our tourism industry and they have a lot of character.

looks pretty good actually, but would quickly look ****e if everyone else had the same idea.

heres an idea? close the horses door now, one like that looks fine but a row/square of them will look ****e, so just stop other ones from doing it now

Well the Supermacs shop front in the Examiner piece doesn't resemble the online pics of Hunger Harry's...

The story said Dublin City Council objected - not the "Government"!

And as for maintaining Temple Bar "standards" and being a "nice place" - is that not stretching the imagination a bit?:rolleyes:

The shopfront looks plastic, cheap and gaudy.
The byelaws are there for a reason. If a business can stick signage up willy-nilly the area would look pretty shabby in no time at all.

Also, this business of applying for retention has to stop.

Its Supermacs on Eyre Square in Galway, and the picture is from about 10 years ago.

DCC made sure that the McDonald's exterior in TB is very toned down compared to most of their restaurants,no reason Supermacs/Papa Johns shouldn't have to comply with the same rules.

Fair play to see DCC finally having some sort of enforcement action in the papers, although I don't doubt that some civic minded individual was the spark for this. DCC have been incredibly lax over the years such that frankly Dublin's shopfronts are generally a gaudy mess.

Have a look at archiseek for some of the worse offenders (can't post a link at the minute as the site is down)

Supermacs changed an awardwinning piece of 90s design to a hokey diddle-eye fake "traditional" shopfront without permission. It's pretty simple to see that you don't simply get to do what you want with a building.

For toursim purposes it's fairly important to get rid of that kind of ****e from places like Temple Bar, it's a lot harder to trick them into thinking the place is special otherwise! It's common enough of practice all over the world for touristy street spot things?

They were so strict on McDonalds i don't see why supermacs should be different. I hear they make mcDonalds close early to curb anti-social behaviour. If that's true it's a joke! Don't tackle the issues, don't provide more cops, but do make businesses(who have bouncers at night) close early :rolleyes:
