Is this a step too far? After all, it's only a sign. It's not like the whole shop front was altered.

Is the government being too invasive here?

I think they are sticking their noses in where they're not welcome, however I do agree that a certain standard has to be maintained in the Temple Bar area, as it is one of the very few nice places in our Fair City.

We should be protesting in the streets! This is an infringement on our basic human rights! Oust the government! Stock up on Molotovs!

I wouldn't class Temple Bar as a nice area at all.

That's the council wasting resources. The sign is no worse or better than most around.

Hey council, deal with real problems.

I agree with the council. We should be protective of these types of areas. They important for our tourism industry and they have a lot of character.

    Yep just across from Fitzsimons.

so because it isnt bland dull and ****e they have to change it

    yeah makes perfect sense

looks pretty good actually, but would quickly look ****e if everyone else had the same idea.

heres an idea? close the horses door now, one like that looks fine but a row/square of them will look ****e, so just stop other ones from doing it now

Well the Supermacs shop front in the Examiner piece doesn't resemble the online pics of Hunger Harry's...

The story said Dublin City Council objected - not the "Government"!

And as for maintaining Temple Bar "standards" and being a "nice place" - is that not stretching the imagination a bit?

They made McDonalds use subtle signage so I bet they had no choice but to tell SuperCulchies to do the same.

The shopfront looks plastic, cheap and gaudy.
The byelaws are there for a reason. If a business can stick signage up willy-nilly the area would look pretty shabby in no time at all.

Also, this business of applying for retention has to stop.

The picture in the Examiner article is of some random Supermacs somewhere. The Irish Times article has the actual shopfront.

Its Supermacs on Eyre Square in Galway, and the picture is from about 10 years ago.

DCC made sure that the McDonald's exterior in TB is very toned down compared to most of their restaurants,no reason Supermacs/Papa Johns shouldn't have to comply with the same rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,299 ✭✭✭✭MadsL

Fair play to see DCC finally having some sort of enforcement action in the papers, although I don't doubt that some civic minded individual was the spark for this. DCC have been incredibly lax over the years such that frankly Dublin's shopfronts are generally a gaudy mess.

Have a look at archiseek for some of the worse offenders (can't post a link at the minute as the site is down)

    jesus wept

they make the place sound desirable! templebar is a kip

"the letters arent fancy enough for this area  "

what the **** are they on!!

a bunch of knackers hanging around somewhere is a bunch of knackers hanging around somewhere, doesnt matter if the place looks cold modern steel or 'traditional'

there must be way more to this objection, with probably a competitor behind it

Supermacs changed an awardwinning piece of 90s design to a hokey diddle-eye fake "traditional" shopfront without permission. It's pretty simple to see that you don't simply get to do what you want with a building.

    Meh.

    No issue at all.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

For toursim purposes it's fairly important to get rid of that kind of ****e from places like Temple Bar, it's a lot harder to trick them into thinking the place is special otherwise! It's common enough of practice all over the world for touristy street spot things?

in defense of the OP, if temple bar is empty, it looks really nice.
I walked through on xmas day and it was nice.

usually though i find the place a s***hole

They were so strict on McDonalds i don't see why supermacs should be different. I hear they make mcDonalds close early to curb anti-social behaviour. If that's true it's a joke! Don't tackle the issues, don't provide more cops, but do make businesses(who have bouncers at night) close early

It's called planning law and I am all for it. People put shocking **** up outside their premises, either to get attention or because they just have no taste. We should be way stricter here with regard to fascia and signage IMO. Ruins an area for everyone else.

Maybe I should have read the actual article... This issue is basically that they didn't apply for PP, fair enough. And it is a bit gick.

I love walking around Temple Bar when I'm in Dublin, though I've only been there during the day so have never had to witness the shenanigans that go on at night.

It's a shame the place has such a bad rep 'cause it really does have a lot of potential. It's also unfortunate that you see corporate places like Supermacs, McDonalds, Subway, Starbucks etc. in what's supposed to be a cultural quarter with independent stores, but I guess it's better than there being more empty buildings and less employment in the area.

That looks a million times better than the horrible steel shopfront was there before it =/

The horrible is what the tenant did to it, not the fairly innocuous steel frame shopfront.

I think if you own a building you should be able to do what you want with it. Other people haven't paid for it so they shouldn't have any say in how it looks.

Yeah, that's a great way to run a city.

Tell me, if your neighbor decides to run a pig farm in the half of the semi-D that he owns, that also OK?

That's somewhat different because it would be affecting your quality of life, constant noise, heavy machinery being around, etc. But when it's just visual I don't think anyone else should have a say.

What if your neighbour wants to recreate his house like a Swiss Cuckoo clock? Or a medieval castle? Still fine? How about a thick layer of stuffed animals? https://landofblogging.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/2004886.jpg

Your post was popular, so I think I must have the most unpopular opinions that you're wrong, temple bar is one of the nicest parts of Dublin. You get drunks there at night, but you get drunks outside every bar in the country at night.

We all have to look at it though.

Not to mention the fact that lassaiz-faire planning regs have destroyed rural Irland with one-off housing.

There is nothing wrong in planning a city, a county or even a village. Basic planning rules help everyone.
