How did we go from having one of the best back lines last yr to what we have now?
Is it all to do with the f1ucking about with Higgins in the forward line that has unsettled the backs

Mayos solid full back line is one of the biggest myths in sport. 4 soft goals in 2 All Ireland finals and people still believe Mayo are hard to break down. Even London tested them last year but the truth is a bitter pill.

Its not anti Mayo to point out that they have flaws. There is a misconception that Mayo have a tight defence when they do not. Mayo concede soft goals in almost every match they play and always at crucial times. It starts to matter in August when they no longer face third rate opposition. Its cost them 2 All Irelands and it turned what should have been a stroll against Cork into a dog fight. When you go to all the trouble and expense of following Mayo football you really should watch the matches.

Every team has flaws what I was pointing out is that mayo backs are not near as good as they where last yr,they where rock solid.was Tyrone third rate opposition last yr in august?the dogfight against cork will stand better for us a stroll as u call it is no good to no one, they had to dig deep to win that game.
In my opinion we lost the all Ireland on the sideline last yr.
At this time off yr we allways get people like you on this thread next you will be coming out will "bottlers" " chokers" ect
We have heard it all before, there is no point even replying to you any more.now where is that ignore button

I don't think you're being very fair here tbh, his point about the Mayo backline being overrated and occasionally suspect is well made and correct.

the goal Mayo conceded against Roscommon back in June was their first conceded in Connacht for three years. Yes two goals have been conceded in each of the last two AI finals but that was against the very best sides. In this year's league Mayo started to conceded bigger total than normal maybe Horans tactics or the introduction of the black card has affected that.

Looking at Dublin again. The blanket defence is useless against that team. Their second test will come from donegal and I can't see them either turning over the best Dublin team I have ever seen.

I would say Kerry or mayo have to focus on the middle 8 . Starve possession and play football only in their half. It would take a momentous effort but I from a mayo point of view would hope we are slightly better equipped than our rivals in mid field and half back. With Aiden osea in the half forward we are strong there too. The question we would have is if we can hold enough possession, would we out score them?. I fear not. Our full back line need to have the games of their lives just to keep in touching distance of the dubs. I like the ferocity of McLaughlin. Doc and Aiden in the Half forward line. Keegan . Boyle and it will have to be Vaughan in the half backs. Saying this already looks nothing new or fresh. I really hope I'm missing a trick with this team.

Kerry on the other hand are dangerous at the front probably have the edge on mayo but their weakness is where Dublin are at their strongest.

That's pretty much the only way we can win if we get to the final. Tactically only Dublin and Mayo are operating like this where there is huge commitment to winning the middle third. So it's numbers 5 - 12 versus 5 - 12 from both sides. 5 - 12 is relatively even between both teams. You would think that there has been a big leap in the fitness of the OSheas. But then Nicky Deveraux is more of a physical presence than Mccaffrey. McManamon is more consistent than Ciaran Kilkenny. The hard to escape part is that Dublins full forward line tips the balance heavily. It wouldn't surprise you for either Bernard Brogan or Eoin OGara to be game breakers. Similar you'd expect a solid display from Alan Brogan if he is full forward.
It's why I think Mayo will try and drop double coverage back on James ODonoghue. If they get past Kerry they will do similar to either Brogan or OGara. OGara for instance is a totally different proposition this year. He's been used as a goal threat. Physically we don't have a back who can hold him up 1 on 1. His soloing and accuracy in shooting for goals is much improved.
In terms of playing a sweeper I'v yet to see us operate that very well. I'd prefer a situation where two wing forwards are man marked, double coverage on corner forward and opposition have to win the game from three least effective forwards. So you'd be covering heavily Connolly/Flynn/ one of OGara/Brogan. Similar setup for Kerry.

Horan was watching Gavin Duffy for Salthill at the weekend, where he showed well ( according to the Hogan Stand ) Could he be a wild card that Horan could play off the bench against Kerry?

What position was Duffy playing in for salt hill . The last thing we need is another mid fielder .

Midfield I think but he could be used in the full forward line if he were to play a role.

Lads Gavin Duffy never was and never is going to play a minute of championship football for Mayo, waste of time talking about him IMO

Maybe you're right but there's been talk around the county since the Cork game that he might be used. The Hogan Stand seems to think there is something in the story also.

Why would we use a player who has never even played a league game for us ahead of the likes of Freeman and Feeney?

That doesn't hold up, sure look at Conor O'Shea starting against Roscommon

The way things are I think Kevin McStay will get in ahead of Feeney! The way Dublin are playing now no option should be left off the table. If he can give us that bit of strength up front or around the midfield diamond then I'm all for it. It would free up Vaughan to no end and the rest of the backs wouldn't need to bolster the forwards as much, that's what killed us last year in the final

In my eyes there is a HUGE difference between starting someone in the first game of the summer against Roscommon than bringing someone in for an All Ireland Semi Final versus Kerry!

He was playing in the same team as Sean Armstrong at the weekend. Horan wouldn't go to Galway to watch him play unless had potential. He might feature off bench against Kerry we don't know.

If Horan at this stage were to play Duffy in any shape or form over an existing squad member v Kerry, then it would bring his ability to piss players off and alienate them to a whole new level

This is Horan, well capable and proven track record of doing this.

How was he midfield in the senior championship at the weekend so? Come back when ya know the facts.
Funny how the whole Gavin Duffy thing came up the week after Dublin demolished yet another team.

Look at the end of the day he needs to do whatever needs doing to win an AI. That is the be ll and end all of everything. I would think that the players are totally on board with whatever needs to be done and if that means that some player has to shut up and swallow his own personal disappointment over someone else getting game time well that will soon disappear if we win the AI.

In all fairness, who cares about pissing off players - it's about winning football matches for that team. And as much as Horan might seem to be very rigid in his thinking, I'm pretty sure if any of our players on the bench are so special then they will be picked, regardless of who they are.

On the Gavin Duffy thing, I've have it on good authority that he is playing very, very well in training and unlucky not to be in the last to match day squads.

Only his first championship game for the seniors.

If anyone thinks Horan is going to use Duffy in a meaningful capacity they're having a severe laugh at someone else's expense.

Obviously it's not 'sin e', at least try to be correct when you're trying to come off as smug ;)

What day does the mayo team train does any one know?

How much do you think it bothers Brian Cody to piss players off? A manager needs to make cold hard decisions, and if that involves a player or players being pissed off, so be it. At this stage, I really don't care who plays if it means that we can finally get across the line.

Do they have any training night open to the public?Oftentimes cycle in past McHale Park, would love to pop in but I gave up a long time ago as I presumed the training was behind closed doors.
Do they train up at the centre of excellence in Ballyhaunis?
