Ah he'd probably still have made 5....would have been nerve jangling in the dark alright though.

It's amazing to think that even with three off the tee he is more than good enough to get par on a par 5.

Somebody else was saying earlier in the thread that the backlog started behind Jum Furyk. The player tracker was showing two clear holes in front of him.

Furyk is disgracefully slow, he should be put on the clock every round. Some how he escapes the criticism that Crane and Na get. He doesn't look as bad on TV because the TV cameras know how long his routine takes and only cut to him when he is about to hit. Has he ever been hit with a penalty for slow play?

Slow play is the greatest nuisance in golf at any grade especially when it's raining. Standing waiting for slow lads to get out of range and getting soaked is no joke.
There should be a ranger out in every competition at least.
Notices about slow play are having no effect.

They found the ball pretty quickly (btw the TV guy was David Feherty; another N.I. golfer of yore) and it would have been unduly harsh to penalse Day given the difficulty of getting to the ball.

Yea understandable but rules are rules and I taught it unfair on his playing partner in this case it just happen to be Rory plus it was a major and plus he was leading! he just seemed in no rush.

Don't get me wrong I actually like Day.

He wouldn't have been playing 3 off the tee. He would have been dropping from where the ball entered the hazard for a penalty shot so probably pretty close to where he actually played from.

But the 5 minute rule is about lookng for a lost ball, once it's found then its not lost anymore and the clock stopped. Player then has reasonable time to get to the ball and a certain time (30secs I think) to play it. Here getting to the ball would include getting his equipment to the ball.

Someone said he actually took a big risk to speed up the shot by having the caddy throw the club to him as if he'd dropped it it would have been grounding club in a hazard and a penaly but I think drooping a club accidentally is ok, golf rules are actually very fair.

Didn't realise that. Looked it up, is it because it was a water hazard which has less harsh rules of relief?

Fair play to Rory. Really has hit a great run of form. Bout time too.

On a lighter note, hoping it has not been posted, Padraig doing a "happy gilmore" in the USPGA. Apparently he does this quite a bit.

You were probably thinking about out of bounds where the only option it to reload from where you hit. Water hazards allow you to do that too but there are other options too (there would have been 5 different options available to him in this case!).

Out of bounds cost you 2 shots but water hazards generally only cost you one (or none if you roll up the socks and have a go).

Out of bounds costs you one stroke and the distance

You have options with water (or lateral) hazards. Unless you want to play out of them, they will also cost you one stroke but you get one other option with Water Hazards (yellow stakes) and two with Lateral Water Hazards (red stakes) as below.

    Water Hazards (Yellow Stakes)

    1. Replay previous stroke under penalty of one stroke (identical to when you go out of bounds)
    2. Drop a ball, keeping your point of entry between you and the hole going as far back as you like.

    Lateral Water Hazards (Red Stakes)

Options 1 & 2 as above but also:

    3. Drop within two club lengths of point of entry, not nearer the hole.

1st off the tee goes OOB.
    Tee up again playing 3.

    3-1=2

You've already played 1 though. If there was a two stroke penalty, you'd be playing 4 from the tee.

    1 (original tee shot) +1 (penalty stroke) +1 (second ball) = 3

Yeah, understand. But I look at it this way:

Scenario 1. I drive from the tee box say 250 yds right up the middle. My next shot which I stitch the pin is my second. And I tap in for a birdee. ( I wish)

Scenario 2. I drive OOB. Then I play identical shots as per above, walking off with a 5. So in effect, 2 shots worse off.

Or am I missing something ?

You're two shots worse off than your score with your second ball, but you've played 4 strokes as you hit the first ball once. There is only one stroke added on that you haven't actually played.

I know you understand the rules perfectly but the fact remains: If you go OOB and I do not, and we play identical shots thereafter, I will end up with 2 shots less than you on said hole ;)

Yes, but in that case I will have played one more than you (as I hit a ball out of bounds and you didn't)

Sorry lads I should have ben clearer but was trying to keep it simple, I meant that oob costs you two strokes in practical terms not that there was a two stroke penalty.

Is Rory the first one to win 3 pga tour events in a row?

Nope, Byron Nelson won some crazy amount in a row one year....10 or 11 I think.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_PGA_Tour_win_streaks

    Byron Nelson 11 (1945)
    Woods 7 (2006-1007) , 6, 5, 3, 3

A fair few golfers have 3 consecutive wins as you can see from the link.

Has anyone ever gotten more world ranking points (276) from 3 consecutive tournaments than Rory just has?

I'm sure Tiger has, as well as a good few others. I'm pretty sure Rory picked up a big number the last time he won the PGA and went on to win the Deutsche Bank and the BMW the following month.

The BMW PGA is only worth 64

I'd say the Duetsche Bank is less than 70

    Sorry, it's 74

I never truly appreciated just how good Mickleson's short game was until last night. I knew it was good, but I couldn't get over just how good - regardless of the lie, the slope, he just kept on getting up and down. It was amazing to watch.

    Wrong BMW :p

It's the BMW Championship in the FedEx playoffs I was talking about. 70 points for that. The only difference was that the Barclays was between those two wins and the PGA Championship, so it's not exactly the same. Having said that, it was four events that totalled 247 points.

He's already built up a big lead over Adam Scott in the rankings, I don't think he's likely to be caught before the new year.

Probably going to get hockeyed out of it here. Was that 3 wood the shot he took on on the 10th last night? Looked like he was going for a high bomber. Even his initial body language had a look of WTF! about it.

Think they said he was 282 yards out Slice, I'm not sure even McIlroy would get there with one of his high ones.
Best miss hit ever if it was :)
