Actually Miss Stars, it was 3

I trained with a lad high up in the coast guard and he told me the all weather lifeboat, inshore lifeboat AND the coast guard rib. Very embarrassing that I caused all that haha. Was a cool experience though, makes me appreciate all those lads a lot more. They do a hell of a job.

Yeah it certainly seems that way. Think I've replaced so much on it now it's pretty much brand new

I reckon in a month or so I'm gonna' sell it and get a speedboat for the winter. Would a 100hp engine on a fletcher lets say do around 50mph?

Surprised they didn't, woulda' been great getting airlifted haha. Don't know why they scrambled so many assets, I called Pan-Pan and said in no immediate danger on the VHF. Either way I'm greatful for their help and was actually a really good experience!

Okay firstly, it's called a joke. Something you should familiarise yourself with as it seems you have a stick jammed so far up your own ass that you seem to take everything too serious.

Actually I do have a fair idea on seamanship (more than your average jetskier anyway), as mentioned in different threads I've done a few courses. Firstly I didn't "maroon" anyone, Ireland's Eye had tens of people still on it. Last thing I want to do is constantly be coming in and out of the busy harbour area to drop and collect people every 5 minutes, so Ireland's Eye certainly seems like a better choice.

Again, that stick is so far up there you are assuming that's what happened. The jetski sucked them up with the engine on idle when dropping off the lads. The jetski cut out when I was in the middle of the sea, so my friend who I had "marooned" saw this and got other jet ski users on Ireland's Eye to tow me to the beach (they wouldn't tow us to the harbour for some reason). Should my friend have been at Howth harbour, he wouldn't have seen this and could have made the situation a lot worse.

Again, it's called a joke. I'm trying to make a somewhat serious situation a bit light hearted. I didn't ask for all those to be launched I clearly mentioned "PAN PAN" & "not in any immediate danger" so I don't know why they launched so many. I'm not going to lie, it was a cool experience. I never said I didn't learn anything out of it though, I learnt plenty. I enjoyed seeing how it all worked and what these guys have to do on a day to day basis.

Tell me when I said that I don't care about the work of volunteers? I knew one of the lads that rescued us and I apologized to them profusely but they said they don't mind that's what they're for, which it is. What was I supposed to do, stay there and freeze to death?

You clearly have a problem with jetskiers in general and are absolutely oblivious to the fact they're not all the same.

@Tabnabs - I highly doubt it cost that much considering the all weather life boat didn't even move and the inshore was only on the water for around 15 mins.

Again you all seem to have a massive hatred towards jetski users before you even know their story. I tried to socialise with you and get a better understanding of why you all feel this way but your sense seems to go out the window when discussing this subject. So instead of humouring "idiots" like pedroeibar1 I will instead bid you all fairwell. :pac:

My hope was that he would have put some money where his big ignorant mouth is and posted a photo of a receipt from his donation to the RNLI. Anyway, the idiot is gone so it saves reporting him for personal abuse.

While it doesn't excuse not wearing a pfd, here is the circumstances.
I was actually helming all day, I just gave her the helm to take the pic. probably less than a minute.
She had just got back on board having been swimming. She is at level 5 with the IWS swimming classes. She was wearing her pfd when skiing but took it off for the swim. It's hard to swim in a pfd and the wetsuit gives some buoyancy anyway.
When I took back the helm, I instructed her to put her pfd back on. You can see her wearing it in the 4th pic.

I guessed as much. I saw her wearing one in other pics. However, I see an adult in another pic without any PFD on as well. I have no problem with kids swimming supervised near a stationary boat without a PFD.

I just think that, especially with kids, we need to promote a culture that it is never alright to not wear a PDF on board any small craft, not even for a minute - and this applies to everyone. Having adults seemingly exempt from this does not help develop this culture.

Personal responsibility means wearing the correct flotation device regardless, it's not really that much of a hassle for gods sake.

I'm on a boat to have fun and enjoy myself, as safely as I can, and that means not only wearing the right pfd/lifejacket, but making sure I'm on the right radio channel and have all the safety gear we need on board.

Last time I did a 12 hour plus trip on a boat, we'd a check before hand to make sure we'd everything we needed. Every time I go out racing, there is a check that we all have lifejackets on. Should someone go overboard and be in difficulty, the committee will stop racing.

Far too many tragic stories of people thinking they'd be fine, and not being so about.

An attitude like yours is what over taxes our rescue services. I might sound over the top, but I was a lifeguard in my teens, and the amount of times I'd to attend to very small children in the deep end cos their parents ignored them was unreal. Different situation, same attitude.

I have a simple rule of when out on deck or in the open on a boat, a lifejacket is always on. Only take it off when in saloon, or if on a long passage and inside a wheelhouse or similar. #1 rule of boats, "safety is up to you" Things can deteriorate rapidly where you need to rush outside or/and abandon quickly and without a lifejacket you are screwed. Not a big imposition if wearing an inflatable, but something more bulky is definitely more awkward.

At the end of the day, personal responsibility is paramount, and relying solely on the emergency services to get you to safety is about the worst backup plan you can have.

Alone on deck - LJ on. Alone on deck at night - LJ & tether. Moving away from the cockpit at night even when not alone - LJ & tether.

Big boat on long trip, chillin over lunch with a few others in the cockpit? Optional.

I don't think this has been mentioned - if so, apologies - but there is another side to wearing a pfd, i.e. you can be SEEN to wear a pfd. Others, perhaps not as logical, experienced or well-trained as you (or are not skilled mind readers, able to figure out WHY you're not wearing one) will "copy" what they see and only what they see. So, for me, regardless of comfort or relative absense of hazard, I want others to see this 'oul tar wearing his lifejacket and not "only if this" or "if that" and maybe teach by example.

The more you wear one the more comfortable a pfd becomes. In fact, Mrs. BrensBenz and her husband have had many meals in the saloon of a cruiser on Lough Erne, in our matching Crewsavers. When friends arrive, they too seem perfectly content to follow our lead.

PS: Some time ago, I did come across an exception to this. Apparently, he didn't need a lifejacket on my boat because, being a great swimmer, "he was drownproof!!!!" His exact words!

Yeah obviously you have to set a good example. My rules above obviously apply to boats where all on board are adult sailors, rather than kids/novices/novice kids. Should have clarified that...

Honestly though, in a 35ft+ boat sitting in the cockpit eating lunch on a fine day among a group of adult sailors who still have plenty of miles/hours (pick your measure) to go, it's generally up to the individual to make a call on lifejacket. If I'm planning to snooze in the cockpit after lunch on a fine day, jacket goes on. It's all well and good saying "oh jacket on every single time you step on deck", but what about when you've just cooked a meal and are bringing stuff in and out? It's downright dangerous to have a lifejacket on down below. So saying you must always have a jacket on makes life unworkable. I'm all in favour of safety on board; if there's no reason not to have one on, put one on and any sign of bad weather means the jacket should go straight on. But at some point there has to be an element of personal responsibility. If the skipper finds that unacceptable, fine, either put the foot down or don't sail together. I find it hard to believe when people say "oh I've done hundreds of thousands of miles and not once did I set foot on deck with no lifejacket on, even when in a floating tank of a boat". I think it's better - when you're among experienced adults - to simply have some hard and fast rules about it (alone, bad weather & night; and NO lifejackets on below) and leave the rest up to the individual.

And for the sake of pedantry, I'll spell it out. I'm talking about pleasure sailing. Racing = jacket on when on board (but not below). End of.

I would rather post a pic from my weekend sailing, but I cant. Why? Because I have not got 50 post (I think) yet. Exactly 50. If in ten years time I will only have 49, I still wont be able to. This is just another example to a stupid rigid rule, as wearing PFD at ALL time. Life is not black and white.

The wearing of Pfd and every other aspect of safety on the water, is all to do with the mindset of the people involved, just like the wearing of seatbelts on our roads, it took years to get it across, and still hasn't reached quite a few non believers, probably never will.
In over twenty years I had a fair few different type of Pfd, some as restrictive as a straitjacket, now not so much.
And right now it's feels very awkward to not be wearing one, as opposed to having one on, just like the seatbelt......

Not quite a boat but from a boat..... privileged to have a couple of Minke Whales surface almost alongside near Mizzen Head. Also rounding the Fastnet - never gets old for me.

The last proper model I built was an F -16 with my son when he was very small. He had no interest, his modelling activity now is financial models and periodic involvement with the leggy female variety. Prior to the F-16 the last was a model of the Santa Maria when I was a teenager – I’d come off my bike and had a leg in plaster. I finished the Nina, Pinta and Mataro and was working on the Maria to finish the set. I made them on the diningroom table, I took so much care, using different thread sizes for the standing and running rigging, building up blobs of varnish on knots to make them look like blocks, painting them for added effect using a single-hair paintbrush, threading line through tiny blocks, taking hours over tying-off minute things like futtock shrouds, gluing on and varnishing ratlines……. And then a cat my sister had just adopted/rescued made s#it of them all. They were put in the attic where they like a spiders nest gathered dust until the attic got reinsulated, another breakage and then AFAIK the bin. I’ve never done another, but I still have a (plastic) scale model kit of the ‘Endeavour’ (J-Class) in the attic of the old family home.
Stick to the real stuff Fergal, at least a cat can only leave pawmarks on that!

Before I head south for the winter, I managed to do a bit of sailing on Blessington lake earlier this week on two different types of catamarans.

In the picture you'll see a big Hobie Cat and three Hobie Bravos. The latter are wonderful little catamarans, very forgiving, a pleasure to sail. Sailing around the lake (lakes?) was quite enjoyable, with the warm sunshine, incredible scenery and perfect winds.

Oh, and a big shout out to Vexorg and Steve for going above and beyond the call of duty to get me on the water this Summer. Cheers lads.

Anyone out at the weekend? I brought out the gopro but didn't get a moment to switch it on. Lucky thing, too, would have had evidence of the clusterfcuk of a race! Was good and windy, would have made for some nice footage. Exhausting.

Yes, we were out in the DBSC on Saturday and Greystones on Sunday, Saturday was very heavy going and we were short of crew. Sunday started off nice and light 7 to 12knts, the wind started coming while we were waiting for the 2nd race was in the 15 to 27 knot range. Keeping the rudder in the water in heavy airs was hard going.

Congrats to HeidiHeidi for 1st in Class in Greystones.

There was a big pod about alright but I didn't get to see them

Skerries sea tours got a little video of them.
