The buffoon could have gotten a boat to assist him on his heroic mission. But no, this clown wanted to make a statement like some Hollywood star.

In all seriousness if it were the opposite way around (down here, union jack) - we'd have people saying "really tragic, pointless death. Unwanted English imperialism again causes loss of life - why should he choose to turn the other cheek, etc."

    Bull.
We didn't get such lol'ing for the other drownings here this summer - no matter how stupid the circumstance.

What are you blabbering about? A 68 year old man purposefully attempting to swim across water to replace one flag with another is not comparable to young people going for a swim in the hot weather.
Sure they're retardedly jingoistic with rediculous nationalism in the North, but people on the thread don't sound much better crowing about it!

So you say that people down here wouldn't be much better and then describe the people of the north as 'retardedly jingoistic'? So everyone is 'retardedly jingoistic' and you're clever?

Dear me that's one of the stupidest posts I've read in quite a while.

    So much fail.

You would have thought that a 68 year old man, would have enough sense and life experience not to risk his life over the colour of a piece of cloth. A Darwin award nominee for the stupidity of it all.

Step 1: Take flegs and place them in sectarian areas
Step 2: Surround flegs with minefields
    Step 3: ???
Step 4: Peace in Northern Ireland.

Though the ??? isn't really ??? it's the bit where bigots self select and kill themselves.

I feel sorry for the man but this is possibly the single most ridiculous and pointless waste of life I have come across in a very long time.

It's tragic no matter what the circumstances.

For a flag. The worst part is, there are probably some who still think it was worth it!

Pmsl. Another brave son of Ulster tragically struck down in the line of duty

Any real proud Ulsterman should hold no afinity to a union fleg or an Irish tricolour, a real Ulsterman like myself only will view the Ulster province flag as their own, I do not support the division of the province but couldn't care less about anywhere south of Cavan.

Having said that, anyone who cares that much about flegs is a deeply dodgy person.
I have to look at union flegs in my homeland every day of the week and I do not care.

I told the husband about this and his comment was that they should put up another 100 flags ;)

I for one have always thought the real solution to the situation up there is to make them a country of their own within the commonwealth but still have a president to suit both sides. It would be nice to have a united Ireland but really its not worth it. I for one dont want the north to be part of the south due to all the issues and bigotry that goes on up there on both sides. They should focus on life and that both sides are just human and not worry about flegs. Have better education for their kids, better hospitals etc and not worry about the silly stuff they seem to get off on up there.

I have lived in enough countries to know one government is the same as the next one.

And to think the last vision he would have had before he left this mortal coil would have been the tricolour.
    Now that's irony.

We could create our own president by arranging a protestant to have a baby with a catholic and then the baby would be president in 20 years.

    Interesting first post.
Why Cavan out of curiosity? Why not Monaghan?

As Cavan have been in the province since the 1590's but if you really want it you can buy them off us.

    Riiight....
If you really want to be pedantic then Cavan used to be a part of Connaught.

How does the Republic go about "buying back" something of their own

I included Cavan in my post because it's in modern Ulster but if people don't view it as part of the province that is fair enough, however, Donegal and Monaghan is un-disputable Ulster territory and have been connected to the lands of modern Northern Ireland via ancient kingdoms such as the Oriel and Northern Ui Neill, their accents plainly show this ancient link

I'm not talking about politics, i'm talking about provinces here, Connaught men can feel free to raise money on their own to buy Cavan from the Ulidians.

By the way, it was a joke, you're awful up tight here so you are.

Cavan is culturally disputed territory between Ulidians and western Irish, quare bakes on ye, I never heard anything like it when the Cavan army visited Derry last year, "Go on Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn" I was shocked for life
