Smoking in Pubs after hours

I was in a pub (which I wont name unless I'm given permission to) in camden street in dublin last night when it got closing time the barmaid shut the main door into the pub and starting handing out ashtrays then half the pub started smoking.

This was a shock to me I have not been in a pub were people were smoking since the smoking ban was bought in. It made me remember what the horrible smell of tobacco was like which I was forced to inhale.

I woundn't mind so much if this pub had a special room for smokers but this was in the main bar and it was impossible for non smokers to avoid breathing in the smoke.

What I'd like to know does this happen in a lot of pubs were they let people smoke after hours ? or maybe I just went unlucky to have gone to a very dodgy establishment ?

You could leave. You were invited to stay on for a lock in where it's impossible to have people going in and out the door for a smoke. Happens at every lock in.

When it closed it's not trading, no longer considered a workplace and becomes a private party? A guess only.

People can't go outside to smoke as the pub as it's supposed to be closed.

well it must be dodgy establishment if its open after hours:P:P

that being said a barman said to me before...its a much worse offense to serve after hours than ignore the smoke ban....so they couldn't have the smokers out on the street like

Sorry? But you're complaining about a pub allowing smoking when they're already allowing you to stay after hours for a pint? You are aware that you're breaking the law yourself by being there? I'm not a fan of smoking but what a publican does in the premises after legal licensing hours is their own business and at their own risk. Get over it.

Congratulations. You attended your very first lock-in. After your first communion and you confirmation, this is the next big step in your life. When you grow up, you will realise that the purpose of the lock-in is to give the birdie to the nanny state and ignore their rules. Not only did you witness a person smoking a cigarette, but if you looked hard enough, you may also have noticed someone being given a fresh pint after the state-mandated closing time! And nobody died!!!

However, should your hear anybody mention a dirty word - you know the type; the f-word or the s-word, well, then you should go immediately home to your mammy and tell her everything. She'll know what to do.

How were they breaking the law by locking the door ? It was only 1am some pubs/clubs in that area are open till 230am.

It was after the pubs opening hours but not the legal opening hours.

Eh, you did have a choice. You could have chosen to leave the pint on the counter and leave the place if the smoke was bothering you that much. You weren't "forced" into anything so stop feeling sorry for yourself and just be glad you got a lock-in.
