Just a small thing here, when Beckham joined United the old system was still in place where young players signed as apprentices and as such, chores like cleaning boots, kit, changing room etc. were their job, no choices. That has all long since changed now to the academy system.

As for the man himself, well he's been extremely successful and has managed to create a near perfect public image while doing so, something which is no mean feat if you try to think of how many famous people comes across as being completely humble and genuine.

On the above I could be wrong but I got the impression that even after doing his allocated chores he would stay back longer to help gather jerseys etc in the dressing room after matches, so he could be around the first team and get what its like. Didn't the other players joke about this on the Class of 92? I thought I remember the older players joking about why was this young lad hanging around the dressing room taking their jocks. Could be wrong though been a while since I watched it.

Beckham and Scholes were 2 players I never fully appreciated till they left.

Nobody in world comes close, before or since, in set pieces or crossing, as Beckham has.

    Juninho freekicks :P

    Just no.

Write down all the clubs he's played for and what's he's won. Hype? No. Winner. Yes.

There was major hype. Player of the year awards when there were a number of better players in the United team. The whole England fiasco.

Yes he is a nice fella and yes he worked hard and yes he won trophies but his profile in the game is not commensurate with his ability.

That is what I'm talking about re "hype". To be honest I would challenge anyone to dispute that assertion.

Was Beckham's profile commensurate with his ability as a player? No way. Absolutely no way and to claim otherwise is bonkers.

Exciting times for ye lads. I've been a fan of LVG since the mid 90s. Perfect choice for United. And if ye get Hummels as is rumoured, it'll be the signing of the summer

Honestly thats just a matter of opinion. Some would agree some would disagree, we can't say one is right or wrong.

Can't remember either tbh but it'd make sense alright to want to hang around the first team dressing room if there were players there!

Just thought you had made it sound like Becks was Mr. Selfless from the start going around shining boots out of kindness :pac:

Absolutely - Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I would genuinely be shocked though if anyone thinks that Beckham's profile in the game was commensurate with his ability as a player.

More quotes from Woodward saying we can break transfer records if we want, that we can sign the real superstars.

How about some action to go with those words, woody. Kroos, James, fabregas, Sanchez gone so far this summer....

Hold on now, a decent bit of this hype you're on about is media attention as opposed to anyone saying he was the best in the world. Give the fact the women love(d?) him and who he married that's to be expected. In terms of football ability I don't think he was overrated at all. In fact I think he work rate was under rated due the non football attention.

Ah stop, beckham in his prime was a world class player. the year utd won the treble he was class, only 2nd to rivaldo in world player of the year and many at d time argued he should have won it. Pfa young player of d year, Matt busby player of d year, team of d year loads of time, class for England , Real Madrid player of d year an absolute first name on d team sheet along with Roy Keane fergie used to say

As an example, he came second in the 1999 FIFA World Player of the Year. That was ludicrous.

Klopp about Hummels to Man Utd: "If that's not a bull**** story, I'll eat a broom stick" (via @SkySportNewsHD)

I love the man. I hope he gets to manage us some day.

Klopp sums up my feelings on the chances of Hummels happening nicely there.

The Vidal story has been in the press too long. Its another Thiago/Sneijder saga IMO.

Utd will probably do 2/3 smaller deals between now and the close of the window.

And beckhams ability?? Probably the best crosser of a ball there has ever been

Had to look up that word, doesn't happen often! Thanks for making me feel stupid. :pac:

Beckham is most definitely a United hero for me anyway and his ability did match the praise he received. Played a huge part in the treble season so being runner up in the player of the year was not ludicrous in the slightest.

Keane had him in his all time best United team to have played with and I would agree with him as Beckham had bags of ability and proved it on the pitch.

If you're talking about the footballing profile around him, prepared to be shocked! :P Honestly I think it does. You don't get that sort of reputation for playing poor.

Has been selected on PFA team of the year 4 times, Real Madrid player of the year, Man United player of the year, UEFA team of the year twice, not to mention UEFA player of the year. I know you mentioned about the awards he's won but he truly was world class in his prime.

Not to mention first Englishman to win league titles in four different countries (England, Spain, USA, France), has the joint-second most goal assists in European Championship finals history and is third in terms of most assists of all time in the Premiership. You don't achieve those without playing outstanding football.

So I know its just my view but I definitely think you can't deny he was a world class player who deserved the profile around him.

If you're talking about his celebrity image? I don't see why that would affect us thinking he was world class.

The same year United won a treble and he was one of the main players in d team?

One of the best crossers and dead ball specialists I've ever seen. However, I'd again be critical of his essentially deluded notions about playing centrally. His best work was done on the right.

    Ian Harte says hello.

Actually, don't United need experienced cover at left back following Buttner and Evra's departures ?

Pretty sure you've not seen much of beckham play and have made up some tainted view as what you're saying simply does not add up to what I've seen and know has happened.

You seem infatuated with what other outlets have said about him and you seem to be annoyed that there was some form of hype about him. If anything that detracted from what a superb player he was.

    United. Real. AC Milan.

You don't have continued success at clubs like these unless you're a seriously good footballer.

Add to that the only English player to score at 3 world cups

The vermaelen deal should be wrapped up in the next week or so, assuming Arsenal dont delay it.

That wud be £40m spent on two defenders and i dont think its incorrect to say that overall our defence is in a worse position now than it was 12 months ago.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭Larry Wildman

I'd question whether he'd have won as many individual awards or achieved as much generally had he looked more like Luke Chadwick.

And no, I'm not trolling or taking the p..s.

A good player but not a great player to coin a phrase.

To put it another way, I wouldn't have him anywhere near an all time United greats top 10.

What is the story with this proposed Vermaelen deal? Surely the idea of swapping Smalling or Jones is just bull, ye?

What are you even on about? He wanted to play middle but fergie wanted him wide due to his crossing ability, passing and work rate and in the biggest game in utd history champ league final 99 he started centre mid and was utds best player by a mile, ran himself into d ground and crossed in the 2 balls that won us d treble
