It is, in fairness, he seems well to do, so more money than sense kinda, car looks like it came from the factory though I'll give him that, also, no sadly, I've about 2 euro and not a load of fuel, I'll try borrow something though and let you know :)

    Ah.. car viewing tonight hopefully.
Bangernomics special to buy and sell on after the insurance pays up from the accident.
Nothing special, but then again for 450 odd quid with tax and test it's not going to be pretty!

It's a car I have directly insulted many times on this forum in the past.
    Not an alfa/fiat/gm though.

Photos later if I buy it.

How hard would it be to repair lacquer peel on an E39? Would it break the bank or could it be done as DIY?

    Respray is the only way.

From the terrible pics on the Ad it looks to just be on the front bumper.

    This is the car:

If you want it to look good a DIY just wont cut it imo, especially as a first try. You might get it looking better, but I wouldn't do it myself. And respray costs are too expensive in the price bracket you're in. I put 600 into mine for work on the rear arches (slight rust, and paint), which is pretty mental in terms of running costs. But it had to be done.

The only handy thing is a family friend is a repair/respray specialist so would be able to get it done for a reasonably handy price I'd say, it's one of two cars I'm eyeing at the moment.

At last you've moved away from junkers with christmas tree dashes and fault codes!
That looks like a lovely example of a e39 with m sport spec. A small bit of lacquer peel wouldnt put me off it, you're saving 500+ quid on what that car should be listed at if it were mint!

If it was a more inconspicuous area then you could give it a shot yourself, but seeing as it's a major, visible part I would be hesitant about doing it yourself. It's not that bad atm, but in time it'll only spread, so it would need attention of some sort.

Red cars seem to be more susceptible to lacquer peeling.
