Teen Porn Laws gone mad?

OK, so if I'm understanding that right, the issue isn't even so much that he was sending the pictures to a 15-year-old, but that he was possessing and distributing child pornography of himself??

I suppose we better start arresting every teenager for child abuse so, they're all interfering with themselves. Sending dick pics is a pretty stupid thing to do, but the fact that it's even a possibility that the poor lad could end up on the sex-offenders register for life over it is insane. That could literally ruin his life, all over a stupid decision that didn't hurt anyone. Teenagers having sex or engaging in sexual behaviour with teenagers is not the same thing as adults having sex with teenagers.

Thinking back to that time (quite a stretch) getting laid was the absolute most important thing in the world.

    Also from the same article
In an editorial this week, the Washington Post newspaper, citing an academic study, said the youth's behaviour "puts him in the company of nearly 30% of his peers."
We're clearly not going to lock 30% of the male teens up. Maybe we are? There was a thread a couple of weeks ago where the guy went for a point while he was waiting for his case. He only got threatened with contempt not jailed for it. We clearly don't have the prison space.

We should arrest all parents as well that have pictures of their newborn children

The amount of pictures of me and my siblings in various states of undress that are lying around in photo albums in my parents' house should maybe be a cause for concern for them too! Here was me thinking the most sinister thing about them was the way they get brought out to embarrass us when we bring boyfriends and girlfriends home

The youth, due to appear 1 August in youth court, had "repeatedly" been told to stop sending "pornographic videos" to the 15-year-old girl, said Manassas City Police in a statement.

The "sexting" case took a surreal twist when police obtained a warrant to photograph the boy's penis to prove that it was the same one that appeared in the text videos.

On Thursday, as publicity about the case grew in the Washington area, they said they would not serve the warrant, which would have involved a drug-induced erection at a local hospital.

Under Virginia law, anyone in possession of obscene photos of a juvenile is technically in possession of child pornography, even if it is a picture of themselves, Foster said.

Sending dick picks to a 15 year old, warrant to medically induce an erection to make sure it was him, accused of manufacturing and distributing child porn.

This reads like the plot of some weird Japanese movie.

The entire age of consent system needs to be utterly overhauled to (a) treat boys and girls identically, and (b) accept the reality that teens will engage in consensual sexual activity with their peers and no amount of criminalisation will stop them.

If anything should be made illegal, it's using the word todger!

The worst thing about this is reverse the genders so it's a 17 year old girl sending a 15 year old boy naked pics and this wouldn't be an issue or they'd probably charge him for viewing child pornography.

It's OK, the hourly quota for making a variation on that point on boards.ie has been met. Thanks though.

This case caught my eye. Some lad has been taking pics of his todger and sending them to his girlfriend. That in itself stikes me as no biggie.

He may be an idiot, but no need to insult his manhood :D

The article fails to mention that she had been sending pictures too and it was in fact her that initiated.

Yet she hasn't been charged at all.

Mental alright. Badly though out/written law by the looks of it.

Along with just about every other law they have. Very shortsighted when it comes to their 'justice' system.

Also...I wonder what would happen if a 13 year old sent similar pictures of themselves to an adult? Would the adult be charged with possession of Child Pornography? That's a scary thought.

    Not without that warrant anyway.

Fair point but isn't this just something that parents sort out between themselves (or am I completely out of touch)?

"You sit there, listen to what Mr GIRLS FATHER has to say."
"Now hand over your phone - you can have it back in 6 months."

Or have I just lost the plot?

You actually expect parents to parent their children? Don't be silly, it's a brave new world, that's the states job now.

We still treat women like helpless innocent maidens in this country.

We are the neck-beards of Europe.

Jail time seems an harsh. I'd just sentence him to five minutes alone in a room with the girls father, that should sort the problem.

USA is a scary place, I have photos of my 2 year old playing naked on the beach - am I in possesion of obscene material ????

and the whole thing of giving him drugs to induce a boner and photograph it ???

farcical, creating the same "obscene" images they are trying to prosecute him over.

    There's actually a precedent for this :

Afaik that is illegal. In practice it probably comes down to personal interpretation. I think a case like that went to court (possibly US) but was thrown out by the judge as the accused "didn't have a case to answer".

In the last year we've had one high profile case of an American teen committing suicide because he was filmed masturbating, and it was apparently circulated around the school until he was isolated and a laughing stock, and another suicide by an American teenager whose headmaster was trying to have him placed on the sex offender register for streaking at a football game.

The US seems to have really serious issues.

It's the same sort of thing when you typcially can see a seven year old expelled for biting his pop-tart into the shape of a gun (you know, because school-shootings).

Are they positively retarded there or something?

Jesus Christ- they have nukes!

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0722/632457-sexting/

There's something of the madhouse about this whole story. When I first saw this story I thought it was just America .

I am a bit amazed at police in the UK. That rather than pointing out the [unforseen?] consequences of a law to politicians , they have written to all teenagers telling them not to break the law.

It strikes me as madness to criminalise teenagers for what teenagers are going to do. I don't see any great difference between teenagers now and teenagers in the past other than they have the technology at their fingertips.

Putting teenagers on the sex offenders register devalues the sex offenders register. The more people that are on it does not make children any safer. The more people that are on it, the more "normal" it is to be on it.

The incident isn't anything got to do with him. Not a huge amount to do with his daughter either (though she apparently committed the same crime). Presume you wouldn't be advocating her being put in a room with the boy's father though?

The crime is producing child pornography (of oneself). A completely stupid concept, that seems to be "proven" in an even more stupid way.

No you have not lost the plot. If it was my daughter I would call to the house and talk to the parents with the kid, explain that this has to stop. If nothing stopped then I would talk to the kid myself, something along the lines of...

If you send another photo of your cock to my daughter, I will put it in a vice whilst I forcibly shove the phone, un-lubricated, up your ass.

Would you not just talk to your daughter about it? She's apparently the one who started the sexting and wants it to continue. Or would you rather not do the whole being a parent thing?

Sexual assault/torture is always the answer.

Start off with that kind of stuff and your daughter will end up thinking she's not your property.
