sure what? Barcelona had a 35 year old puyol, mascherano and pique at the back for them the last number of years, do you not think they would try to address that? maybe they did and the players were not available.

Pepe is going into his 8th season at centre back for real Madrid!!!

Barcas game isnt built on defending, it was passing which is why there was a cm back there.

Same with madrid to an extent which is why those players were adequate for their systems.

Doesn't take away from the fact they didn't address a weakness that has been clear to see yet were still successful.

Ferguson left a grand squad, with a few glaring weakness where he had a blindspot but definitely one good enough to scrape into the top 4....the problem was that squad couldn't/wouldn't/weren't allowed to play for David Moyes....it was going to be the same no matter who took over bar maybe a handful of managers (of which LVG is possibly one).

The lull post Fergie and that one last hurrah is almost unprecedented, especially with modern players...they just went and took a gap year.

Couple of signings and and a new outlook and it'll be grand.

And what does that have to do with anything?

You defended the squad by saying Fergie had tried to improve the midfield and pointing to the signings of Veron, Kleberson and Djemba Djemba, signings that were made a full decade ago!

Are you now saying that midfield was neglected so badly because nobody is able to buy top midfielders? For ten years Manchester United were unable to buy a top midfielder? Are you aware of just how ridiculous that sounds?

like I said, who was available?

they had the greatest manager of all time, with an eye for a player and Bobby Charlton regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time who spoke with each other all the time and your trying to tell me they never spoke about the midfield area?!

there is actually a massive lack of quality players available right now with an extremely over crowded and over priced market

Ya guess you're right. Same as us to an extent. Maybe they were trusted to play a system right.

Shoulda woulda coulda. We will never know why these things happen

its not even close though. THe 08 side would hammer last seasons side (and the previous seasons side) in much the same way most top teams were able to.

There have been some great signings in that time, but the overall level of the squad has dropped massively - and that should not have been allowed to happen. The lack of attention paid to central midfield was a joke.

It is indeed close. The 07/08 side would not have hammered the 12/13 side. Top teams were not able to hammer the 12/13 side and the 07/08 side weren't in the business of hammering top sides either.

The 13/14 side had £64m spent on it. The fact that that money was poorly spent and that the manager wasn't up to the task is the reason for last season's under-performance, not Fergie's management of the squad previous to that.

Im not expecting much from this presser, which isnt a bad thing. Id like LvG to keep his cards close to his chest personally.
