Raid 2 (not a slight on Raid 1 at all at all- both brilliant)
Aliens (again not a slight on Alien)
    Toy Story 3
    Die Hard with Vengence
    Evil Dead 2

    If including big franchises:
    HP Prisoner of Azkaban
    LotR Two Towers
    SW Empire Strikes Back

    Which one?

The first Star Trek film, Star Trek the motion picture, is a cure for insomnia.

The sequel, Star Trek The Wrath of Khan, is infinitely better.

Very hard to disagree with a single opinion posted here. Not your typical after hours thread that's for sure.

I want to go watch The Last Crusade and Back To The Future part 3 again now, probably my favourite films from being a kid.

-Some Harry Potters, not the greatest films..but they definitely got better as they went along
    -Mad max 2

    Superman 2? Really?

Manhunter was far better , better music, believable Hannibal, freakier baddie and yer man from CSI

Enjoyed watching the entire lot again followed by the tv series.

The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the series.
Wrath of Khan is vastly superior to the first one.
Dawn of the Dead is better than Night of the Living Dead

Temple of Doom is a prequel.

Let's not split hairs. All prequels are essentially sequels in that they build on (albeit in a different timeframe) the original work.

But Temple of Doom isn't a patch on Raiders.

Regarding the T1 Vs T2 debate.

In isolation, both films are excellent, most of us would agree on that. But to compare the two is like comparing biscuits and crackers.

There are elements that could be used to differentiate though. If we strip out the factors of budget and technological capabilities at the time of shooting, we are left with acting and plot.

    Acting
Arnie was better in T1 than T2, predominantly because he said fook all in T1
Yer wan was better in T2, if not a little bit annoying.
T1 had Kyle Reese saying “Come with me if you want to live”
T2 had Arnie saying “Come with me if you want to live”
T2 had the T1000, T1 had the T800. Upgrades are not always better, remember windows vista?
    Add as necessary.....

    Plot
    T1 originated the plot
    T2 ripped off the plot

I’d say that puts T1 in the lead.....

Addams Family Values. Much darker and funnier than the original.

The Superman II that ended up in cinemas was a lot different to the dark and broody film the director intended. Warner Brothers wanted a camp/funny film so they sacked him and brought in a new director who would give them what they wanted.

Road Warrior should definitely be at the top, Mad Max is good but it sure does drag a lot.

In fairness they did a bit more money on those sequals

Mad Max 2 cost more than 10 times the first one.

    Desperado cost $7,000,000

El Mariachi was made for $7,000

Mad Max reminded me of The Cars That Ate Paris - and low and behold this apt quote
    http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2011/01/peter-weir-retrospective-cars-that-ate.html
George Miller said the same thing: that in the first film he got done what he could, but in the second he was able to put in all the texture he’d wanted to in the first.”

What about the colour of money?

Newman and cruise both brilliant in it. The hustler is a classic no doubt but I definitely have rewatched the sequel more.

    Aliens.
TBH I have to say I prefer the first one. Much more psychological in nature. The second was all about bigger budget and let's make a female action hero for the 80's vibe to it. IMH the first is more real and she's more real and more of an actual real hero. It's much more nuanced, less "Transformers VII, the 14 year olds in Arkansas will dig the visuals" about it.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

No I didn't get my username from a comic book or at least I didn't know it was another reference to it-

    This is all tangental btw

Comic book movies are the cancer of modern cinema by and large.

We're going to look back at the last decade and this one as the way we look at movies like Commando now. At least the western had something to say (usually)

I ripped this post off IMDB:
Because Marvel has decided to saturate the market of CBM and release 3-5 per year on top of DC who is planning a DCU ( at least 2 per year soon). This market will be flooded and die out in the next 10 years.

So lets pretend it's 2027 and CBM are starting to bomb at the Box Office and Disney pulls the plug on Marvel after it's milked it for everything it could for 15 years. DC has made it's version of the cash cow Marvelish Universe (Snyderverse) and we look back on the hundreds of CBM made at that point (most of them being the same format with the same scenarios over and over). People will look at "Watchmen" (2009) and realize how amazing it truly is. This film did something none of the others have, it was a successful rated "R" CBM.

It sticks out like a sore thumb when sitting next to Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other over the top one liner joke, good guys are good and bad guys are bad (black and white) white toast, cookie cutter films.

Every Generation has it's wave of success with certain genres of film.

In the late 1930s-1950s it was EPIC (4 hour) movies like "Lawrence of Arabia" "Gone with the Wind" "Ben-Hur" etc...
In the 1960s-1970s it was Westerns usually featuring John Wayne or Clint Eastwood
In the 1980s-1990s it was Cop/War Action Flicks usually featuring Stallone, Arnold, Bruce Willis, etc...
Finally in the early 2000s Spider-Man and X-Men started a new generation of Comic Book films

My prediction is when this CBM phase dries up and mainstream moves on to the next thing, there will be five films that stand up (Other than the Reeve Superman films and Burton Batman films which were classics before this genre exploded)

    1. The Dark Knight (You could say the entire trilogy as one story, but mostly TDK 2008)
    2. Spider-Man (It will be viewed as the one that started the big mainstream Box Office explosion)
    3. Watchmen (It will be the artistic yet dark/gritty rated R hit. It is different and stands out)
    4. Superman Returns (A lot of people are going to disagree with this, but it is critically acclaimed and stands out)
    5. The Avengers (First team up film, unless the JLA tops it in 2016)

Went to see dawn of the planet of the apes tonight at a preview screening and while it did drag at times I thought overall it is a better movie than rise of the planet of the apes.

I really hope the next thing is good quality sci-fi.

    28 Weeks later

This movie was the perfect sequal to 28 Days later. If Britain (a nuclear power/member of NATO, G7) was overrun by a rage virus it is forseable that the USA would intervene and throw all their resources at it.:)

I found it disappointing, thought it became a bit too Hollywood. That said, I enjoyed it more on the second viewing recently. Still doesn't hold a candle to the original imo.

I love it, that opening! Also has the most squemish scene in a movie ever, you know the one if you saw it.

I feel like it's a T1 vs T2, Alien vs Aliens comparison again, they're both so different.

28 days later is a far better movie, when Jim is lying out in the woods
and all of a sudden he catches a glimpse of an airliner it's contrail blew my mind. Realising that Britian was a prison and they were essentially locked in and abandoned/contained. It wasn't a whole civilisation collapse, also Brendan Gleeson turn in front of hi daughter is haunting and one if the saddest thing I've ever saw

The fact that one drop of blood can turn you, is terrifying and makes everybody hugely fallible/real
