What's he supposed to say: "yes, vidal is for sale. I believe he has his heart set on moving to United. Give us the right money, and we will let him go"

Standard fare from a club CEO.

Wouldn't imagine he'd say "not for sale" if he was in the middle of talks to sell him. Would probably just say nothing.

We've not had a good midfield for years, the defence has always got by.

    This claim doesn't really work.

We are talking about 2 young defenders that need to develop into their potential playing behind a rubbish midfield, and you compare them to one of the greatest club defences ever behind that same midfield.

Well, of course the defence of Rio, Vidic and Evra at their peak performed better than the developing Jones and Smalling, thats not really surprising is it?

Did he say why Conte left the job he seemed to love?
Did he say why Evra still hasn't officially signed for Juve?

Nothing would be taken as confirmation by some :/

What's said publicly in a fan-friendly statement isn't necessarily the truth, and it could even be trying to aid negotiations by showing United he's happy to talk publicly.

That's not saying it's happening, mind. I'm still leaning towards the opinion it's another Fabregas/Snedjier story that the press are exaggerating. But just cause he said that doesn't mean it's "dead" by any stretch....

I like the way you insist on ignoring their lack of consistent games at CB in a settled defence and merely talk about number of starts. It shows that you know the flaw in your argument.

I'm not ignoring anything, I just don't see the lack of a perfect environment as a valid reason for them not developing.

    From The Daily Mail

Giuseppe Marotta, Juve chief executive, at a press conference this afternoon: 'Arturo Vidal is not for sale. He's one of the most important players in the squad.' :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,446 ✭✭✭glued

He actually said that Juventus will never put Vidal up for sale. That's entirely different. If they were confident of him staying they would say that he's not leaving Juventus and the rumours are nonsense. He said what any professional would in that situation.

Vidal will probably leave but who knows where he'll end up

"The player always makes the decision". Hmm, sounds like he's already directing the blame in Vidal's direction.

I've wanted Smalling and Jones to develop into top class defenders as much as anyone.

Alas they haven't and the excuses about being played out of position and not getting enough game time, though it might have been the case last year, are no longer valid.

26 League starts for Jones and 17 for Smalling. (Jonny Evans had 17)

They're headed down the David May career path.

Doesn't matter what I think about it anyway, I won't be picking the team.:)
I hate to agree here but I do to an extent. Smalling looked fantastic in his first 18 or so months at the club but could well be in a make-or-break season at the club this year, but I do trust that if anyone can get him back on that for it is LVG.

The situation with Jones is different. It is depressing that we supposedly could have got Varane instead of him at that time, but it now is what it is. He has some great "untrainable" intangibles and at 22 has a good deal of time to improve (whereas Smalling turns 25 in November, not old but closer to a typical "peak" wndow). Unlike Snalling though I don't think Jones has been consistently very good for us ever. He has flashed at times but the types of brain facts we saw from him this season have been typical of his game pretty much since he joined. Can't remember where I saw it but about a year back I remember reading an article on how we were almost guaranteed to concede in his area in games where he started at CB... but he would have only turned 21 recently at the time so deserved a bit of a let off. It will be interesting to see how he does under Louis, but I am relieved that his errors are no longer being wilfully ignored by commentators and pundits as they used to be, possibly due to him being a potential English golden boy (much as like has happened with Rooney at times over his career). If he were Spanish or South Maurice he would have been ripped to shreds a long, long time ago but all the same he does seem to have a lot of potential. I always thought he was better suited to a CM runner/box to box type role but I guess with depth issues he is now a CB.

Now you've moved from ignoring the argument to misrepresenting it, ie pretending I'm asking for a perfect environment for their development.

He certainly is a very fresh looking 62 year old considering the stressful environments he's been in during his career.

What do you think Jones and Smalling need then?

Sorry I'm getting lost on the last few pages.

Reading Pro.F's posts correctly, he is indicating that we can't be overly critical on Jones and Smalling, because they have not been afforded considerable first team games operating at CB.

    Is this the case?

Cause I'd seriously question anyone argueing to the differ.

Jones and Smallings developement has NOTICABLY stalled, due to the sheer lack of gametime at CB, and instead being deployed out RB or in Jones case DM/CM.

The two will never develop their game reading ability and attunement to how the game flows from that position, when they are not playing in it.

Yeah I figured the quotes were unlikely to be the "not for sale" they were represented as originally. The guy straight up saying "Vidal isn't for sale" would be end of the discussion to my mind, him saying "we would never put him up for sale" etc is different.

Ducker said Van Gaal won't meet players until 5:30. Literally seconds later the United account says he's meeting them now. Maybe nobody has any inside scoop in United anymore.

It looks like he's welcoming Ed to the club. Already displaying his dominance.

Right so. UTD are not signing Vidal. Who are the alternatives?
