    errm what?

a player who wanted to join us, in a position we already had 3, if not 4 players, who was out of favour and not playing - 1 goal all season, should not have cost £37million.

I guess if you base him on a 4 month window, you could say we overpaid.

Personally, I see the fact we bought a player that was
Chelsea's POTY twice in his two seasons there,
helped them to win the CL,
    helped them win the EL,
in his first year, had the second most assists in the league
Was one of the most important players in a team that we are close divisional rivals too.
was 25 with three years to run on a contract at a club that didn't really need money.

Had Jose not benched him for the opening half of the season, or had we gone after him last summer, I think his value would have been seen well above 37m, especially compared to the likes of Bale, Suarez, Sanchez, Luiz, even Herrera, Shaw et all who are going for far more.

That sponsorship list is hilarious, I think Ed is just cheap to be honest. Anytime he has to but something he just says **** it I'll sign a sponsor and get a couple free.

New car - sign a sponsor
Need new tires for the new car - sign a sponsor
Repaint the house - sign a sponsor
New computer / printer - sign a sponsor
Some wine for a party - sign a sponsor
new watch - sign a sponsor
new phone - sign a sponsor for every region in the world just in case
new some grub for a party - sing a sponsor

It doesn't matter if he was World Player of the Year for the previous two seasons, a player is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for them.

We offloaded Beckham and RVN to Madrid for less than they were worth in similar circumstances. The manager decides they're not needed anymore so the club takes what they can get.

We overpaid for Mata by about 10-15m because Woodward, is inexperienced in the transfer market and his priority was to buy a big name urgently.

He wasn't overpaid for by 10-15m.

Nobody was signing Mata from Chelsea for 22-27m.

Not direct rivals on the domestic front.

We were never going to get him for anything less than what we paid for them. We have their two-time player of the year and I think he'll be a bargain once Van Gaal takes over.

Chelsea did not have to sell Mata and especially not to us...it's not like they needed the money and he was under contract. There you have a couple of factors which would have bumped up the price a bit. I still think he is worth every penny of whatever we paid for him.

Lads go on about transfer fees like they're students planning a night out....'if I get a taxi into town....I'll have no money for chips on the way home' I doubt very much it is that simple.

We are going to be hearing about Ashley Youungs wages and Fellainis buyout clause til the end of days!!

So you think we could have signed him for 22-27 Million from Chelsea?

They signed him for 22 Million and since he was superb for them in league and CL. He was not even on high wages, so Chelsea were under no pressure to sell him.

you sure about that? with the problems City and PSG have been having with uefa, i would be pretty sure that Chelsea needed to sell Mata and Luiz to allow them to sign players they needed - i guess Jose didnt fancy either player so they were both sold off to sign the likes of Costa, Fabregas and the other 2 lads they signed in January.

FFP is a pile of Ballacks and will be shown to be so in the long run despite a few slaps on the wrist that may be handed out now. If the Sheiks want to get money into their clubs, they will get it in one way or another.

    Ya reckon?

I like Mata but I really wish that £37 million had been spent elsewhere.
Yes, I do, absolutely. There is no doubting his quality and United were in my view absolutely crying out for a star. I'd argue that to put it bluntly he brings more to the team than the ability to play ball and fill a position.

He is an incredible talent, young and world famous, a player other world class players would arguably love to play with and he was Chelsea's player of the year two years running. Its was a lot of money granted but its not as if that was our entire budget blown on a single player.
    errm what?

a player who wanted to join us, in a position we already had 3, if not 4 players, who was out of favour and not playing - 1 goal all season, should not have cost £37million.

Slightly different argument and I agree there were gaping holes elsewhere that needed filling but taken in isolation how many of those 3 or 4 players would you put ahead of him? If Utd were looking to improve surely you replace what is there with something better.

    That remains to be seen.

It was a sh1t load of money to spend on a player Chelsea were actively trying to sell, especially as we were the only buyer.

I'm certain he was a panic buy but I have high hopes that Van Gaal will be better able to utilise him than Moyes would have. He could be our Sneijder.:)

A sh1t load of money, yes, value for money, IMO, yes, definitely.
Ozil £42m, Luiz £50m, Bale £100 gazillion. Crazy money but not so excessive when taken in context for a young and proven premiership star.

Time will tell but I have really high hopes that we'll look back on his singing in years to come and say that he was one of if not the first of the new breed of signings that set us back on the road to success.

Whether Mata was overpriced or not is a matter of opinion but what is certain is United do piss away needless money on players... take into account the money some of these players are on also..

City and Chelsea seem to get players for just in and around what they're worth, (barring Torres)

Selling Beckham for 25million was baffling seeing as he'd make you that much back in merchandise sales on a year. United have a history of letting players go for less than they're worth, Berbatov was 5 million after being bought for 30million because we'd forced ourselves into a corner by paying him a small fortune, that no other club could pay

Arsenal, Chelsea and City all will have significantly better first 11s than us as it stands, Arsenal getting Sanchez and Debuchy and Khedira on their way, City getting Mangala and Sagna, Chelsea getting Costa and Fabregas with Felipe Luis also meant to be joining.

It would be like negligence on the clubs part if we didn't buy more players, we should be making it as easy as possible for ourselves next season by buying quality players

Please correct me if I'm wrong but one thing that stuck with me from LVG at the world cup is that he is a manager that likes/will use all players available to him (This is the part that's open to correction :D) When he brought on the 3rd choice keeper late against Brazil wasn't that every player in Dutch Squad used.

Think we'll see same way of thinking at United once the season kicks off.

it really is amazing how we rediculed City and Chelsea for years about their spending (and even Liverpool) and now a huge chunk of our fans are happy to see us doing the same.

us getting good deals that make sense are few and far between...i guess kagawa was one, and you could say RVP but after that, our dealings in the last 3 or 4 years is poor compared to the other clubs we are competing with. City were farcical 3-5 years ago but by and large now even though the have a seemingly endless pit of cash, they appear to be able to negotiate good deals compared to what we are paying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,219 ✭✭✭✭Pro. F

Mata and RVP were fine for value, but it's the same old problem of buying players we don't need and trying to squeeze them in. That is a waste of money. Mata+Rooney or Mata+RVP would be much more effective than trying to play all three in the same team. When you add all the different signings together, where they play and how they work together, we have gotten terrible value for money to build an unbalanced squad. It's been very frustrating to watch our transfer strategy unfold.

In fairness, I think City and Chelsea were ridiculed for the source of the money (oil, money not generated by the club), rather than the amount spent. Liverpool spent horribly on occasion, but we were just as bad.

Buying young English players is a joke, having a British spine to our team was great when we had Beckham, Scholes, et all.

Buying Phil Jones for 20, Smalling who was in the 4th division about a year before hand for over 12 million...

Way more value abroad. Garay transferred recently for like 15 million pounds. Is Luke Shaw twice as effective?!

+1 and with Liverpool it was more about bad spending like selling Torres for £50 million which was amazing business but then wasting it on Carroll

Garay went to zenit for €6 million and Chelsea just signed Filipe Luis for £20 Million much better to buy foreign even if we get 10-15 years out of Shaw
