if Arsenal get Debuchy and Khedira, along with Sanchez thats a serious statement from them already this summer and widens the gap from us to them in terms of playing quality - really does emphasize the task ahead of us. even more concerning is that they are able to get these 3 players for around the same price that we paid for two relatively unproven players .

Chelsea are already stronger with 2 world class signings (tho Costa could easily go the way of Torres & Shev) and again paid about the same as we did for Shaw and Herrera.

we are very much playing catch up at the moment, need a big statement in the transfer market in the next few weeks or we wont be getting near the top 3.

Even though I agree for the most part :-)

Well seeing as Herrera was at the heart of an Atheltico Bilbao side that exceeded expectatons I don't think you can say he is unproven. As for Shaw he is a spectacular player who had some very big games against the top sides. Be interesting to see how it goes as he is going to be the number 1 left back seeing as how Evra is leaving.

Again, I think our attack is quite strong, we have a very good CM in Herrera. What we need now is another CM and a full back to give support to Jones/Evans (two very good young CBs IMO). We get that we will be top 4 easily and maybe even competing for the title. But again, it's all about rebuilding at the minute. A top 4 is what we need this year, I would be very happy with that (even though I do expect us to get it under LVG)

I'd prefer to believe that we had to prise our carefully and selectively chosen targets from their reluctant clubs as opposed to stumping up the asking price for what were effectively unwanted cast offs - but then maybe thats just me :D

His reign starts today, all hail the king

Herrera is very much unproven, we cannot be expecting very much from him this season. Even genuine class like Cazorla and Silva took a season to settle into the Premier league, we should not be expecting Herrera to come and dominate right from the off.

Arsenal were brilliant last year until injuries destroyed them. They have added quality now and I think they will be up there next season. We will do well to finish ahead of Arsenal Chelsea or City this year. Liverpool without Suarez is a major problem. They could fall away again. A comfortable 4th for us would be a success in my eyes this season.

We very much need another couple of signings, what if Herrera gets injured then were back to exactly where we were last season with the same players.

Looks like Allegri is headed for Juve soon.

Allegri seems set to join Juventus today. I supported the team with Maifredi, Delneri & even Capello. I still will now #FinoAllaFine

    So did 'flop' Ozil.

In seriousness though, if Herrera's role is a bit about enforcement, this is especially true. Players that rely on physicality don't usually hit the ground running in the premiership.

The Mirror have been one of the papers saying that Utd arent in for Vidal and specifically David McDonnell, but here is just another example that proves that he hasnt a sccoby doo of what is going on at the club.

He reported a story last night saying that LVG flew into Manchester and was going to go out for dinner last night with senior figures from the club including Ed, http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-uniteds-louis-van-gaal-3866383 however it has now been confirmed that LVG only touched down in Manchester airport at 8.40 this morning.

So they havent a notion of what is going on and are clearly just making stuff up to get clicks from Utd fans, joke.

Carzola was brilliant in his first season in England!

Batten down the hatches, the onslaught is coming. You're not allowed to think 4th is acceptable in here.

I really think that all this noise is coming from Vidal/his agent. It's all from Italy or Chile.

One way to interpret that is that Utd are freezing the media out. Another is that it's Vidal trying to engineer a move/new contract.

And the more time that passes, the less I believe it.

Anyone else think United should go full steam ahead this season for the FA Cup? Annoyed the hell out of me this Summer that United are not the outright most successful club anymore, tied now on 11 with Arsenal.

saying we will finish 4th this season is realistic as right now its the most likeliest scenario.

we sign 2 world class players, we have a chance of a higher finish but until we do it, we dont need to kid ourselves.

We should be out to win everything regardless what competition we are in.

Hard to believe hes looking for a new contract after only signing an extension at the end of last year.

World Cup upped his profile fairly significantly. Can't see Juve having the money to offer him astronomical wages like we can

You will probably get crucified for saying this but it is true. Right now Arsenal, City and Chelsea are well clear imo. Signing Vidal and Hummels would make a huge difference but right now 4th would be a good season imo.

City needed a cb they have addressed that weakness.

Arsenal have been let down by lack of squad depth they have done some very good business. Sanchez and Khedeira will make a huge difference.

Chelsea have signed a world class midfielder and a world class striker their biggest weakness.

How did the World Cup up his profile he was carrying an injury and was not at his best. I don't think United needed the world cup to notice him.

I see what you're saying and it is an anomaly that we haven't won it in 10 years but it should never be a priority for us.

The fact that teams like Arsenal and Liverpool prioritise 'a trophy' as a target for the season is a sign of their weakness and decline.

We're a long way from that level of desperation, regardless of how badly things went last season.

Thought he had a great world cup despite the injury.

Certainly puts our transfer activity so far into perspective.

in saying that, the biggest thing we have added this summer is a manager with balls, respect and motivating and you know what, he could drag us higher than 4th, just like fergie did for the last 5 years.

an easier start than last year certainly helps but we need two more big quality players.

Lads the Stock City game in December is set for Tuesday 7:45 kick off... Will that stick ? .. or is there a chance it will be moved ?

Herrera is arguably more suited to the PL than those two players.
