Thats a cop out though we are talking about something thats designed to insult a Community thats traditionally been subject to oppression.

Also this is Northern Ireland we are talking about not the Republic there is no history of the Roman Catholic Church exerting massive influence on the state

The funny thing is though the regulars that fight the good fight on scores of more fashionable issues are strangely quiet about this

Its handy having posts like this (and that you can see the thankees) as its a quick and easy way to see which posters are just hypocrites when they post about respect and social justice on other issues.
(Cos sure burning a cross means nothing either at the end of the day  )

Again this being Northern Ireland it might be worth considering that people also suffered due to being a member of the Church.

That there is hypocrisy in relation this issue (& indeed many others) among some posters on this site I have no doubt, just trying to explain where it comes from. For many posters the scandals which have embroiled the Church itself & the gradual weakening of conservatism among its members both North & South are themes which loom far larger than the historic discrimination suffered by Northern Catholics which thanks to the Peace Process have now greatly reduced, though by no means disappeared.

The reality is that despite the amount of noise they make, the actual power of the fleg-waving, Pope burning branch of Loyalism has very much diminished since the pogroms of the 70s & continues to do so. As a result people in the South feel more comfortable extending joking about Catholicism to issues relating to the North, presumably with the aim of making that religion look a bit silly & reducing support for it. Is that sometimes insensitive &/or hypocritical? No doubt, but I would still submit that a reduction in the influence of the Catholic Church, whether at state or community level is something that will ultimately benefit all of us, including Nationalists in the 6 Counties. If that's achieved with the help of trendy SJW types (as you seem to be implying the above posters are) then so be it.

To be fair while there are some posters who go overboard (hardly "every single thread") the reality is that the Catholic Church still wields enormous power in this country, many people seeing that as a negative. Until that influence is rolled back & we have things like a properly secular education system & full reproductive rights for women many will continue to be frustrated with Catholicism, which will unfortunately sometimes translate into rudeness. If that offends you that's a pity but you might reflect that the victims of Church power throughout the ages have suffered far more than someone who merely reads something unkind on the internet.

Can't say it offends me c, just whole heartily fed up of seeing the same bilge on most threads (might have exaggerated with every thread in fairness, but it's a regular occurrence).

I get it, you get it, we all get it. The Catholic Church has done some horrific acts in this country and continue to hold extreme power. They need to be dealt with and major changes need to occur from the ground up. But the samey samey smart arse replies are seriously getting tedious. Its the new Godwin on AH.

It's old now and doesn't get anyone anywhere. Like the poster that questioned what the big deal was in burning a statue of Our Lady. Seriously? Seriously?! No, he knew well it was offensive to some but wanted to appear 'cool' and 'edgy'.

I'm not for one minute trying to defend the CC. They should, like every other organisation, be held accountable and criticised for their acts and be publicly lampooned when deemed to have failed. The point I'm making is the immaturity some posters post with. It's the 'sexy' thing to do isn't it? Get in a snide remark about the CC and wait for the thanks to come rolling in. It's unoriginal and an easy target and reeks of (I hate this term) 'militant atheists' that have to inform everyone of their religious views.

If the RC cultists want to get upset about something, why don't they do something about this scumbag?

Catholics in Northern Ireland = different context to catholics in the Republic of Ireland. People are concerned about the sectarian behaviour towards catholics because they are concentrated in the nationalist community, not just a statue.
Serious amount of missing the point on this thread.

    Absolutely reprehensible.

Whether you believe in it or not. If the Orange Order and Loyalists want their views respected then they are going the wrong way about it.

Cannot post links do maybe a moderator can fix the link.

It was taken from a memorial to a suicide victim.

Even if it was just a church one it's still reprehensible and immature to burn something so dear to a large amount of people.

Sure this has been posted, saves me reading through the usual bigoted responses.
    this is a fake photo.

and to add the attack on the Chapel in Killkell was not done by Loyalists.

I think only the Catholics believe Mary was special enough to be born without original sin.

The thing about that, as i believe is the Catholic Church tell the story that Mary remained a Virgin for the rest of her life.

Which is made up nonsense of course.

most protestants would accept that Mary went on to hav e other mortal children with Joseph. There are references in the Gospels where Jesus on the cross speakes to his mother and brothers, which seems to suggest human siblings.if this is the case, Mary could hardly still be a virgin. Rational protestants would venerate Mary, but consider the level of worship she attracts as practically a cult in itself, deflecting attention from God.

Can't decide who the bigger wasters are, the crowd who bothered to rob the statue and put it there or the crowd south of the border, either armchair republicans or this new brand of ultra tolerant anti atheists stewing in faux outrage over the burning of an icon.
How do you get anything done when you're outraged by every little thing, AH going the way of tumblr in this thread.

That's a bit facile. Many of the posters here have no religious belief but, unlike others, have benefited from the culture of democracy and tolerance that has painfully evolved in Europe over the last five centuries, and are sufficiently civilised to respect the beliefs of those who differ from them. They find objectionable the desecration of what others hold dear.

nah, the burning of any religious icons should be welcomed. There's no need to discriminate.

Atheists and anti-Christians are sad little people, you think you are better than men of God but you won't be smiling when judgement day arrives. Such a lost people.

The RC cult is an all-Ireland institution so nationalists should be just as concerned about that criminal organisation as a few muppets theiving a statue related to some mythical woman.

Maybe they should get a life and re-reg? :D

Why are the pious so full of fire and brimstone?

The incident is regrettable and deliberately provocative but it's not the first time.

In Lewes, Sussex there's always been a bit of controversy. Over the last decade an effigy of the pope was burnt and in Firle, an effigy of a gypsy family.

In theory I have no issue with a person burning a virgin mary. However it's completely disgraceful to steal it and do so. What makes it worse is the fact it's going to hit the poor family of the person it was memorialising the worst.

If you're burning something you yourself purchased, there's no issue. Bit idiotic but about it.

I had to collect something in east belfast last night!
It wasnt till I got out of the city center and onto the newtownards road did it hit me that it was marching season.
All I could do is laugh as I sat at a red light in my cork reg car under a milion union jacks and 3 massive murals of lads with machine guns looking down on me while a bunch of young lads drank buckfast right beside my window.
I thought i was done for!
I was actually going to leave it till Saturday too, thank **** I didnt!

    It's done to cause offence, it doesn't matter if it's anti-catholic or anti-Muslim or anti-gay. It's wrong!! It's horrible.

Even worse are the bonfires with the election posters of Anna Lo, a northern politician of Asian descent, with ANNA LO ATE MY DOG. And the PSNI don't seem to have the stones to do anything about it. It's racism, bigotry and has no place in proper society.
