Anyone recall FF's Chrissie Ahern creating a stir about Prince doing a gig in Cork circa 1990? IIRC, mind, the concerns were more about the purple one's lyrical content...
that's it in a nutshell....there has been many really stupid attempts to stop gigs, and that is why the subject to license thing came from ....as far as i can remember...

No one will ever know. Decisions are made in board rooms and negative decisions are never revealed except to other board members and executives.

To understand business and how it works, one needs to read the unpublished trade magazines that circulate only within business. Breakfast meeting and economic forums are also a good barometer of the next decade and they typically give business a two year lead in of ramifications from a variety of reasons.
    How convenient.

Aye.. I'm sure that would stop the NIMBY brigade from their pathetic whining.
I think you'll find the residents are happy enough with how things are going, it's the Garth Brooks fans that are doing the "pathetic whining".

Yeah and it has to be noted that our 'independent national broadcaster' isn't balancing the debates about this with reps from both sides. Aitken got the guts of half an hour on Saturday without anybody from DCC or Residents committees to counter his arguments. I wonder why that would be now?

Yeah, business probably does work that. But to think the cancellation of a couple of Garth Brooks gigs will impact on the decisions being made by multi billion euro corporations is laughable. It really is.

Don't let the Cult of Garth drag you in Ash!

Perhaps, but if one is going to claim "this is going to do MASSIVE DAMAGE WE'RE DOOMED!!!!" it helps to have actual evidence.

DCC dispute that. They claim he was told on numerous occasions that they has a problem with there being 5 gigs planned. However they can't officially do anything until the formal application is lodged.

For anyone to think that 5 80k plus attended concerts on consecutive nights wouldn't cause some problems is naive in the extreme,or greedy.

And did you hear the bit on Sean O'Rourke's show this morning? - The Irish Sun's music journalist parroting all Brooks/The Vintners/Hoteliers claims again without any opposing view except a few words put in by Sean himself.

Indo are at it too. Apparently Miriam O'Callaghan says one of his songs reminds her of her late sister.

One can't have advance evidence of a consequence which is still in the future.

The business community don't see this as a frivolous concert, anyone who thinks that way and thinks it will have no negative influence in the coming years, is naive, there already has been too much of a row over it.

When was the last time a ship was built in Cork? FFS

Isn't the Indo heavily involved with concert promotions? I recall many radio ads for upcoming concerts ending with a really annoying guy with a fakey American accent saying "...In association with X promotions and the Irish Indypendent"

Not surprising they'd be hugely biased.

I thought that was all kept in the board room, or are you on the board of Apple?

Yet again, please provide one shred of evidence. You are starting to sound like EOTR.

Red Nissan's other example was Intel's expansion which is nearly complete.

    The LE Aisling:

Aisling was the last, built at Verlome Dockyard in Cork laid down in 31st January 1979, launched Oct 1979 and commissioned May 1980.

So the Irish Navy were so psychic that they knew that in 34 years time an American singer would not be granted a licence for two concerts in Dublin. Because of this they destroyed the Cork ship building industry.

Your Intel concern was only out by 18 months. :D

I just knew that allowing that John Paul 2 gig would wreck the country!

Intel have more than one phase in their current plan, phase one is, as you say, nearly complete.

Hasn't the other one been moved to Israel instead? Thought I read something about that a while back.

Either way you're delirious if you think the staging of Garth Brooks' concerts have any impact on whether an expansion will take place.

Irish people really have this strong sense of self importance. We think everyone loves us and everyone would love to be Irish just like us. The first question a big international star gets asked on The Late Late Show or one of those Xpose interviews is Have you any Irish in you? or How brilliant do you think Ireland is? It's fcuking embarrassing. Nobody cares. They are just trying to sell something whether it be a movie or an album or a concert. If they loved us they would move here like Robert Shaw did. We had a great opportunity with the Celtic Tiger when the world was taking notice of us for reasons other than drinking and the scenery, but that was blown big time and we had to go begging to the Germans and the Brits. If anyone thinks the world is watching and shaking their heads because Garth fcuking Brooks can only play 3 concerts and not 5 then you really need to book you're first holiday outside Ireland to see how much nobody gives a shyte about us.

I'm actually quite worried now that if gigs don't go ahead, there'll be a mass taking of cyanide pills.

If anyone is going be taking cyanide pills over this, it will be those that are currently foaming at the mouth in the naive hope that Brooks gets refused the licences for the two outstanding dates and then decides to play none of the concerts in protest.

Course, that won't happen for many reasons, but mainly because the two gigs are sure to get licenced, it's just a matter of when for: either later in the week or at some point during the European leg of his World Tour.

It's kinda sad to see so many people wishing that 160,000 ticket holders disappointed, let alone 400,000 of them.. even if they are obtusely and condescendingly seen as just a bunch of Wrangler wearing "gombeens" who are unlikely to ever become brain surgeons.

The business community will see this as a positive thing, Ireland finally enforcing proper regulation.

I think you yourself even know that you're talking shíte on this one. Pick another thing and argue over that, but if you think a country and western singer having to comply with planning regulations is going to stop investment, you are deluded

And if 400,000 end up disappointed instead of 160,000, it's one mans fault.
