I only post in this forum sporadically now, one of the reasons why was highlighted again just after my last post.

The pettiness of some people who use the forum is obvious, and all because they think they will get more thanks.

I'm talking about not posting in the random photo thread because it would be the last / second last post on the thread page. The post before mine was 18.48 my post was 23.03 then within 5 minutes there were 2 more posts and within an hour roughly there were 5 bit of a coincidence given then the thread had moved to a new thread on the default forum settings.

If you take a glance at the previous pages it follows a similar pattern!

Sorry rant over but my point it why be so petty if your photo is good it will get the recognition regardless of where it is posted.

aww booboos, are you vewy sad that your photo was the last one on the page ?

I wrote some post about this before, it's a very real effect, I ran over a couple of random photo threads and did a distribution of thanks vs. position on the page. By far the biggest correlation was a massive increase in thanks for the first post on the page given the default forum page/post count (15). Then it tails off rapidly until, by the time you're about 5 posts down it makes no appreciable difference in the position. That post of mine about this might have exacerbated the problem :D

I couldn't give a toss where my photo appears, I just thought it strange that there was a lack of posts for almost 5 hours then all of a sudden lots of posts, I have my forum setting changed to display 40 post per page but had problems with the "crumbs" i think they are called so reset to default then noticed why they was no activity for a while.

So you've looked into this too and seen that the thanks do increase on the top of a new page, which just reaffirms my point that its jut downright petty, people shouldn't give a toss how many thanks they get.

It's supposed to be about sharing your photo with like minded photo enthusiast's and not about boosting an ego!

Maybe the "random photo" thread should also display posts in random order? :pac:

What a bizarre thread/post. I'm only responding to this as I see one of my pics is being accused of being "tactically" posted. Of course you're correct ... if that was the case it would be unthinkably sad. The simple FACT that it is incorrect and the posting times entirely coincidental really says something about ... well, about you tbh. Do you really think people are sitting at their monitors desperately waiting for that long-awaited 'change of page'. "NOW NOW NOW" you can hear us all screaming as we hit the paste button. Just how incredibly sad do you think our lives are? I couldn't give the faintest toss about where my photo comes in a page and have never thought about it until this thread was posted. I assume that (just like you) people are sometimes likely to be posting to the thread at the end of the day when they've got their photos processed and the kids to bed. Please ... pretty please ... spare us the paranoid conspiracy theories ... we're just sticking up some random photos.

No, my findings don't reaffirm your point. They merely show that posts at the top of the page are more likely to attract thanks, they don't show that people are more likely to wait until they can achieve the top slot before posting. If I were to do some sort of distribution of delays between posting versus position, and that showed that there was a skew in the length of the delay toward the bottom of the page then yes, that would reaffirm your point. I have not done that though, and the data that I do have does not allow you to make the conclusions that you did.

It says I'm not afraid to speak my mind, if you think differently don't be shy spit it out :pac:

I used to post on here quite a bit, back when it was a fantastic place to post to look for advice and to view some simply stunning photos, I'm not basing my thread on paranoia I am basing it on things that I have noticed before lots of times (in fact i even recall a few posters discussing it on the random thread a good while ago) and my memory was refreshed so posted up, sure its going to ruffle some feathers and sure people are going to deny it but it does happen! I'm not saying you specifically but it does happen, it also can be a coincidence too but again it does happen where people wait to post their photos on the new page.

Fair point, but given the fact that you have found this to be the case do you not think some people will use that and think "heh I'll wait to post my photo in a while when its on a new page", I'm sure its been discussed on here before where people admitted such, maybe I should have looked for that thread link before posting my thread as I cannot find it now :o

not talking about the photo thread per se, but i have been known to wait until the post count reaches a certain point to post, as posts often get buried or missed at the end of the page.

Perhaps, that's an intriguing hypothesis. Not one that's borne out by my data though :)

I dont post here much anymore either. (I mainly used to come here for information and C&C rather than the number of likes a post gets in the Random thread.) Im sure there are some people posting tactically but I think that my biggest issue with the random thread is the popularity of certain types of shots. I see a lot of really good...maybe a little more niche images not get much attention. But a photo of a swan,or better still a swan at sunset and boom millions of thanks.

Can see the post frequency slowing down now.

I was going to comment, but i think i'll wait it out until i can be # 16.

In the meantime i'm going to figure out how i can turn imaginary internet points into new camera gear

Interestingly, my last post in there suddenly went from the top of page 75 to the bottom of page 74 shortly after I posted it. I thought this was just somebody innocently deleting an earlier post, but perhaps this was a nefarious attempt by the next poster in that thread to get their post to the top of page 75.

    Cui bono?

^ Except my boards is set for 30 posts per page :D. I'm still on page one and will be for a while yet!

I have however noticed the pattern homer points out

    haha IT WASN'T ME GUVNOR
though that's a good idea. I think I'll start sprinkling the random photo threads with random comments so I can tactically delete them where necessary to nudge my shot up to the top of the page

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,988 ✭✭✭dirtyghettokid

i have noticed that pattern alright, because a lot of the time i go back to look at pics, and if there's one of mine in there that starts on the next page, someone behind me deletes their pic, and i end up back on the end of the last page. personally, i couldn't give a sh*t where my post ends up, but i definitely have noticed the pattern & there are users who delete posts on that thread quite frequently!

the thanks are no bearing to actual talent IMO. the general consensus here is like what patrick says about swans (and landscapes)
i am tempted to just start a random portrait thread. or random random non landscape thread :P

what gets my goat is the whinging about me locking a thread to start a new one and that the pics on the end of the thread that gets locked "won't get anymore thanks" ugh. i think some people need to spend more time shooting & less time over-scrutnising everything on here. (that was not a dig at you homer!)

    was that a rant? :p

BUT THEN THEY WON'T GET INTO THE PICTURE OF THE WEEK THREAD :(:(:(:(

Actually I'll bet that's the motive behind the entire thing, If I get a chance I'll put that script to work again, and correlate post placement & delays in the random photo threads prior to the POTW being set up against random photo threads AFTER the POTW thread was started.

As someone who has never had a single picture in the POTW threads I'm uniquely qualified to comment *sobs*

Jaysus I had no idea there were tactics going on in the random landscape photo thread and photos being deleted and re-posted.

    Weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,988 ✭✭✭dirtyghettokid

of course it's the motive! i got sick of doing POTW because of the whinging and stuff.
daire you've been very close to getting into the thread a few times, i'm always rooting for ya, but i guess you've not got enough hdr swans in your pics :P

I don't want you all to feel like you were being experimented on, and not saying i have amazing images to post or anything, but at the start of May, after a pic i really liked got less than 10 thanks, in a fit of pique i posted a horrible pic in the random thread of a sunset with some swans in it, i cranked up the saturation and i did some other ugly lightroom tricks - i think i might have applied a preset called 'one-click hdr' or something, anyway it was nasty.

    16 thanks.

    Not a bad return.

I've since deleted it from my flickr in shame.

I can post it here again this evening if anyone is really interested

really shocked that people are manipulating the random thread! Never would of thought it and never noticed tbh..

Have to say I do like the random thread. It's a really honest thread and it's interesting to see what people are trying out. I think the photo of the week gives it real impetus.

It's interesting to hear some of the complaints about the like system. I am not sure if the criticism is that fair - I would of thought that the likes are fairly good indication of what's popular (rather than technically proficient). And I think everyone is a good judge of what's a universally pleasing/interesting photo (whether they are a photographer or not), meaning that the photos coming out with most likes should be fairly fair. Though I agree, there are a lot of great photos (imo) that don't get enough credit....

What I wonder is this - suppose the thread was adjudicated by a few judges - would the photo of the week (i.e. top 3) be that different? I reckon not really...

That entirely depends on the judges. If, for example, I was the judge then one of my pictures would be POTW every week. EVERY WEEK !

wait ... what do you mean I wouldn't be able to pick one of my own shots ??!?

IT'S ALL JUST A DAMN POPULARITY CONTEST WITH YOU KIDS
