^ Except my boards is set for 30 posts per page :D. I'm still on page one and will be for a while yet!

I have however noticed the pattern homer points out

Same here set to 30 like most of my forums....as many as possible on a page!! I'm to lazy to have it any other way.

I'm afraid to post a photo now in-case it goes in the wrong place.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I do remember someone excitedly trying to post the 1000th post but the mods kept deleting his oldest posts so that he never quite reached the 1000th.
    Fun times.

Because I've nothing better to be doing ...

In the most recent "Random Photos" thread there are currently 83 pages of photos.
48 different posters are responsible for the top post in those 83 pages.
32 posters are responsible for 1 photo each
9 posters have had 2 photos at the top of the page.
2 posters have 3 shots there
    3 posters have 4
    1 has 5
    1 has 6.

I've taken the guys and gals responsible for 3 or more as they clearly are the sad, petty, ego-boosting posters amongst us.

Daire Quinlan has posted 51 photos in the thread so far. 6 of those have happened to be on the top of the page. The time delay from the last post on the previous page has, for each photo, been: 150mins - 2mins – 120mins – 30mins – 1min - 20min.

Myksyk has posted 38 photos in the thread but has slyly placed 5 of these at the top of the page. Time delay from last post/previous page: 3 -55 -4 -30 -20.

    Starr0409 has had 4. Time delays: 210 – 80 – 15 - 50

Keps has had 4. Time delays: 30-40-15-105

    Thatsnotmyname has had 4. 60-20-20-35

    kevc2 has had 3. 10-105-150

    obrano has had 3. 120-30-70

Clearly these are the main 'culprits'. I'm not sure what we were doing with our other 100s of photos but maybe our cunning plan was so cunning that we deliberately didn't post most of our photos at the top of the page just to throw would-be sleuths off track.

15 (!!!) of these 33 posts were posted within half an hour of the last post on the previous page!! This is clearly unacceptable and an indication that the people involved were deliberately and shamefully trying to garner internet forum 'thanks' from people they don't know ... to boost their egos. :o

Unfortunately the cunning plan seems to have limited success with only around 6 of the 83 photos having gleaned enough thanks to feature in POTW. This 'top of the page' position may not be all it's cracked up to be.

Just so we're clear ... here are the facts as they relate to my pattern of posting:

My 5 photos which appeared on the top of a page did so within an hour of the last post on the previous page.

This was entirely coincidental. There was no intent or plan to post them there.

I was unaware of when a page changed until this thread was opened (i.e. that there were 15 posts per page as standard).

The OP has taken bits of information and drawn (in my case at the very least) incorrect conclusions about intent, motive and even personal characteristics.

As I've said already, I don't care where my posts sit in the thread. If they're ready, they're posted. If I post a lot some will obviously fall at the top of the page. Most do not.

The OP says he is merely 'speaking his mind'. However, it's not entirely unimportant that in this case he purports to be speaking about the motives and intent of other posters, based on nothing but his own annoyance and suspicion. I am one of the main 'culprits' of this phenomenon and he is simply and unarguably wrong in his conclusions about the intention behind why a small sampling of my posts appear where they do.

I would bet that the average time delay between any randomly chosen in-page posts does not differ significantly from the average delay between last post on page to first post on following page ... but someone else can do that research!! To start you off the average time delay between last post one page to first post next page is just under 50 minutes.

    You doth protest too much....

Onto the bolded bit, I'm not saying you specifically. You need to stop taking this as a personal attack on yourself, ha ha.

All's I was saying is from what I see it does happen, i'm not the only one seeing it happen either. It has even been said that people go to the length of deleting a post in the thread so as to ensure their photo gets a "prime location" :pac:

It has sparked quite a discussion on it, which is good even some humor thrown in for good measure which if right or wrong can only be a good thing.

Now where did I leave my tin foil hat!

Back on the point regarding the type of photos that generally get 'thanked' (I haven't looked at the thread for a few days - just catching up), it's definitely true that saturated landscapes and animal pics tend to wow people, but that's not exclusive to here. Impossible scenes they will never see in real life and cute fluffy creatures they want to cuddle are just things that people generally like to see. Composition isn't really a factor for the average viewer.

But I do think that other styles of photos are appreciated here. Just checking back and my last four photos in that thread have about 100 thanks between them, despite being a bit niche. I also won a POTW with a slightly surreal photo that I didn't think anybody would care about.

So I suppose my point, if I have one, is that I wouldn't be as quick to dismiss people's capacity to appreciate something different.

regarding the type of photos that generally get 'thanked'

If a photo makes me smile, not taking into account the composition, exposure or whatever, I thank it.

If a poster puts up a photo and I can understand what he was trying to do although he maybe didn't get it right, I thank it for effort.

Then you get the photos that are brilliant, with regards to composition and technicality. I usually think to myself "I wish i could thank this twice"

    maybe I'm just a thanker:)

Not sure about the rest of you guys but I feel this forum is stagnating a little. On one hand its great, I get to see lots of great local(ish) togs' work and just looking at an image sometimes is an education in itself.. Granted I've only met one of you but hey its good to have a lot of you added on instagram,flickr.500 etc to see the kind of quality out there.
However the overwhelming popularity of certain image types on the random threads has made me a bit lazy in posting anything to it.
But my main problem with the forum is the lack of general discussion.
When I joined first the forum seemed much more active with many C&C threads and lots of users willing to comment. Doesn't seem like there is a huge amount of that lately. Which is a shame!
