Netflix is planning a new €123 million drama series inspired by the life of Queen Elizabeth II.The Crown is set to be 20 episodes in length and will follow Queen Elizabeth's reign from the moment she succeeded her father George VI, at the age of 26, to the present day.
According to reports, Netflix has committed a budget of at least €6m per episode.
The series will be written by Peter Morgan, who wrote 2006 film The Queen and recent stage play The Audience, which both starred Helen Mirren as the monarch. However, Mirren is not currently attached to star in The Crown.
    what a waste of money,

How is it a waste of money? In fairness, Liz is shoving up on being the longest reigning monarch in the UK's history. She's still got to pip Victoria but that'll happen soon. An awful lot of stuff has happened since she came to the throne including major events in world history so if they tie in that aspect then I can't see it being all that bad.

her life has been well documented and translated into many films, and my main issue isnt that they are making it, its that they are spending 123 million on it,

also shes the going to be one of the longest serving monarch because she doesn't control anything, its more or less a symbolic position these days, it not like someone is gonna overthrow her,

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,662 ✭✭✭squonk

Well they obviously reckon there's an audience revenue out there greater than the 123 Million they'll spend making it and I'd be inclined to thnk they're right.

It's been a long time since any british monarch controlled things such that it was worth bumping them off to take the throne.

The story in the MaddAddam books, part of Atwood’s self-described genre of “speculative fiction,” is set in the mid-21st century in a world where corporations have taken over for governments and the genetic modification of organisms is perversely ubiquitous. It centers on the events before and after a Waterless Flood that wipes out almost all of the world’s population and follows an extensive cast of characters, including those responsible for the apocalypse and those struggling to survive it.

Showtime has picked up Roadies, a comedy pilot penned by Cameron Crowe and chronicling the day-to-day life of a successful rock tour as seen through the eyes of the unsung background players – the crew members who help get the show on the road. Crowe will write and will direct the one-hour pilot (which in success will spawn a half-hour series), while Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) will serve as showrunner. Also on board as executive producers are Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk

    http://www.tvwise.co.uk/2014/07/bbc-two-orders-viking-drama-last-kingdom-bbc-america-co-produce/

BBC Two has ordered The Last Kingdom, an eight episode Viking drama from Stephen Butchard and Carnival Films which is being co-produced by BBC America.
The Last Kingdom is set in the year 872 when many of the separate kingdoms of England have fallen to the invading Vikings, with only the great kingdom of Wessex left standing and defiant under the command of King Alfred the Great. The drama follows Uhtred, the son of a Saxon nobleman who is orphaned by the Vikings and then kidnapped and raised as one of their own. He finds his loyalties tested and must choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing.
The series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling franchise The Saxon Stories and is being adapted for television by Good Cop scribe Stephen Butchard. Downton Abbey producers Carnival Films are producing The Last Kingdom, which the BBC said would combine real historical figures and events with fictional characters. Chrissy Skinns is set to produce, while Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant and Stephen Butchard are the executive producers. Prey helmer Nick Murphy is attached to direct.
“Cornwell’s Saxon novels combine historical figures and events with fiction in an utterly compelling way,” said Carnival Films’ Gareth Neame. “In the hands of Stephen Butchard we believe it will make original and engrossing television drama. In part the epic quest of our hero Uhtred, it is also a fascinating re-telling of the tale of King Alfred the Great and how he united the many separate kingdoms on this island into what would become England.”
Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, commented: “I hope The Last Kingdom will expand BBC Two’s distinctive portfolio of drama. It’s an epic narrative with an extraordinary creative team. It will feel like nothing else on television, with all of the scale and intrigue of the best fantasy stories but the reality of fact.”
While BBC Two Controller Kim Shillinglaw added: “BBC Two has a great reputation for distinctive, surprising drama – I’m delighted we are doing The Last Kingdom, an epic piece from a highly regarded creative team.”

The Shannara books are to be made into a tv series

    http://terrybrooks.net/2014/07/mtv-officially-orders-first-season-of-the-shannara-series/

I'm big fan of these and have been reading them since I was a teenager but I don't know how I feel about MTV doing it
are they going to bastardise it like they did with the Sword of Truth books and make something like The Seeker or will it be more epic like Game of Thrones?

NBC has enlisted two acclaimed actors to star in its provocative upcoming miniseries The Slap. Mary-Louise Parker and Peter Sarsgaard will headline the complex family drama about what happens after a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. “The seemingly minor domestic dispute pulls the family apart, begins to expose long-held secrets and ignites a lawsuit that challenges the core American values of all who are pulled into it,” according to the show’s official description.
Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) will play Anouk, a close friend of Hector’s who’s the head writer on a TV show and is now dating the younger leading man. Sarsgaard (The Killing) will play Hector, a husband and father who “loves his wife and family but shows signs of weakness when he finds himself succumbing to the advances of his wife’s teenaged receptionist during his own party.”
NBC has ordered eight episodes of the event series from writer Jon Robin Baitz (Brothers and Sisters) and director Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right).
