The fact that people are so reluctant to stop calling themselves a catholic even though they are clearly atheists really annoys me. It's propagating the idea that the Irish are very religious when in fact they aren't.

Eh, yea.......... that's what it is, atheist people are just reluctant to stop calling themselves Catholic. Right.

Or it could just be the FACT that 84% of the population are Catholic! And happy to put that down on a census form when asked!

I was born a protestant and even I put down Catholic on the census. I thought it was a thing?

You protestants, always up to no good!

I think the broader point is that they're Catholic by the fact they were baptised but I very much doubt 84% are Catholic in terms of following the Vatican's teachings, practices and beliefs. Very few people I know would and would have exceptions on many grounds.

You might think it's funny but that's exactly what its like. Everyday there are things I can't do because I am forced to live to the standards or religious people. Gay marriage doesn't exist here, neither does polymory, abortion is illegal, prostitution is illegal.

Yea I know. I lost count of the amount of people I wanted to murder, and all the cool sh1t I wanted to steal. But of course you can freely do all these things in secular countries!!!

The majority of Catholics in Ireland do not follow the Church or Believe in it or even God.

Most consider it no harm so they just row along with it and it's hard to stop the little one's getting loads of money as they progress through the sacraments ~ and sure it's often a family and social day out two, to boot so again, not a bother.

The Irish are particularly good at topping the hat and yes, sir, three bags full sir ~ when in fact they may hate your guts and the bags are left empty.

How you went from reading a post about gay marriage being illegal because of Christian beliefs to responding with that crap up there is beyond me.

Really? They????? Foreigner yourself are you? Whether you are or not, I, as an Irishman, am highly offended by your last paragraph. Its very insulting, and I'm reporting it.

I was down in the census as Catholic, despite being Methodist. Why? Because Mammy filled it out, and while I live under her roof, I'm Catholic.

    Sense? None.

    Are you religious?

Are you religious OP? Three posts and apart from mentioning census figures, you haven't bothered your arse to tell us.

Same, I moved out years ago but mammy is still penciling me in as a catholic.
She will never accept me for the filthy atheist that I truly am. :( She actually gets very, very angry when I used the dreaded 'A' word.

Gay marriage is not illegal because of Christian beliefs. Its illegal because the govt says so. Its NOT illegal in England, and there's plenty of Catholics there. And my post was highlighting the NON-connection there is between illegal activities, and religion / secularism. Eventhough murder is outlawed in Christianity, its still outlawed in Buddhist, Hindu, AND atheistic countries. You're just trying to use any excuse to Catholic bash, and it aint workin'!

Now do you understand? Must be infuriating for you to accept the fact that 84% of Irish people consider themselves Catholic all the same.

Almost all of those who oppose marriage equality, and intend to vote against it in a forthcoming referendum, do so for religious reasons.

Well that may be on paper, but on the ground Vatican Officials say we won't be a Catholic Country in less than ten years. Catholicism is in real crisis here.

A Muslim in the UK says Ireland will be Islamic within ten years as he finds us the most conducive to the Islamic Faith.

Many would put it down in case it may have may influence decisions that may affect them ~ bit of a throwback

Since its only make-believe like Santa ( to many people ), what they write may not be what they are

I'm sure Fr. Francis Paul Cullen put down something other than "abusing children" on the application form under "hobbies & interests"

Oh yes. Thats right. Every religious person in this world is trying to "convert" you.
Sure you cant walk outside the door right?

    ... erm yeah.

Couldn't get a divorce before 1996. Contraception before 1980. Still can't get an abortion, even if it kills the mother....

It's not about conversion. It's about imposing morality based on belief in fairy tales.

Yeh same here. I don't give a **** whether people are religious or not, but I don't understand people referring to themselves as catholic when they don't practise. I guess it's something people think they just "are" if they were baptised as such.

I'm confused by your confusion OP. Boards is the least "Irish" site you'll find in the Irish internet domain. It represents the fringes of a fringe of the Irish population. Of all the people I know, only 2 others are Boardsies. Nobody else has even heard of it.

2 that will admit to it..

I was surprised to see that in 2011, 84.2% of the population identified themselves as Roman Catholic in the Census. I'm confused that the majority of Irish people believe in a "god". On this website I regularly notice that there are many atheists, but according to the Census only 0.09% (3,905 people) described themselves as being atheist. I know this site isn't a fair representation of the whole population, but it still does confuse me.

The key thing there is 'identify themselves as'.
I know quite a few people who tick boxes saying that they're Catholics, Anglican etc and who never set foot inside a church and sung believe in a god.

There's a bit of a cultural conformity and fear that mammy might read the census going on I think.

If there were a church tax like in Germany you'd soon find out who was *actually* religious and who was just ticking boxes...

Also I think it's only starting to become acceptable to say that you're an athiest in Ireland. It's a bit like coming out as gay or something! You'd get similar shock and horror a few years ago where as now it's increasingly accepted as very much normal.

Try saying you're an athiest in the US though! It's bizarre how they can be very very anti-athiest. You might as well tell them you're a commie!

Ireland is really rapidly joining Northern Europe though. Glad to see it on loads of issues.

No, not in the slightest. I've never needed religion, recognised the bs and hypocracy that accompanies it from an early age but can see that it offers comfort to people, some of my elderly relatives are very religious and I wouldn't have any issue with that.

A relation of mine once said to me, "I'm not sure if I believe in god but I know I'm Catholic". I'd say that attitude is fairly prevalent in Ireland.

This isn't a Catholic country now. We're a country where the majority of people identify as Catholic - there is a difference.

Regarding atheists and the census, the important figure is those who declare themselves as "no religion". There is no atheism box to tick, you'd have to write it in.

    That's the boy - that's the clip I was looking for - unsuccessfully :(

    This ones OK ;)

    1) If God made us in his own image, just take a look at yourself coming out of the shower - the guy made mountain tops and sunsets FCS

    2) Biting your own cheek

    3) The Appendix - why include a bit that does no useful purpose except randomly kill you at some point in time
