I was surprised to see that in 2011, 84.2% of the population identified themselves as Roman Catholic in the Census. I'm confused that the majority of Irish people believe in a "god". On this website I regularly notice that there are many atheists, but according to the Census only 0.09% (3,905 people) described themselves as being atheist. I know this site isn't a fair representation of the whole population, but it still does confuse me.

I predict that this pole will be totally one sided with the "no" option.

But who cares what people believe? Does it matter op?

I'm confused by your confusion OP. Boards is the least "Irish" site you'll find in the Irish internet domain. It represents the fringes of a fringe of the Irish population. Of all the people I know, only 2 others are Boardsies. Nobody else has even heard of it.

Even the little babies and young children said they were Roman Catholic.

Can you imagine a midwife delivering a baby and saying 'it's a Catholic'!

Surveys have shown that most people aren't religious. The census shows more people that can speak Irish and Catholics than there is.

As Dara O'Briain said about religion in Ireland, I'm an Atheist, I don't even belive there's a god, but....... still a Catholic.

A census will give a good idea of how many have "God all on the outside" (as per Meister Eckhart), but if you are asking about the consciousness of hypokeimenon or even noumenon then I think that's a thing that could only be discovered by an extensively personal survey.

Pretty interesting questions, if one takes it any way seriously.

The 'I hate Rangers so I guess I'm Catholic' effect was probably one of the most influential effects too.

The census more or less encourages people to lazily identify as Roman Catholic. The question, if I remember correctly, was 'What religion are you?' Catholic is at the very top, with 'No religion' at the very bottom.

It would make a lot more sense if there were two separate questions:
"Do you believe in a God?" yes/no/unsure

"If you ticked "no" or "unsure" skip the following question"

    "What is your religion?"

Yes because the religious bully people into living like them

The fact that people are so reluctant to stop calling themselves a catholic even though they are clearly atheists really annoys me. It's propagating the idea that the Irish are very religious when in fact they aren't.

Oh yes. Thats right. Every religious person in this world is trying to "convert" you.
Sure you cant walk outside the door right?

    ... erm yeah.

I think the source of the OP's confusion is that his observations of online behaviour don't measure up to his observation and experience of the real world.

Atheism is obviously a failed internet meme which has about as much influence on the real-world as a "that weird thing you do potoo" joke.

You might think it's funny but that's exactly what its like. Everyday there are things I can't do because I am forced to live to the standards or religious people. Gay marriage doesn't exist here, neither does polymory, abortion is illegal, prostitution is illegal.

On the census are there individual options for each household members religion or is it one religion/no religion for all of the household?

Eh, yea.......... that's what it is, atheist people are just reluctant to stop calling themselves Catholic. Right.

Or it could just be the FACT that 84% of the population are Catholic! And happy to put that down on a census form when asked!

I think the broader point is that they're Catholic by the fact they were baptised but I very much doubt 84% are Catholic in terms of following the Vatican's teachings, practices and beliefs. Very few people I know would and would have exceptions on many grounds.

Yea I know. I lost count of the amount of people I wanted to murder, and all the cool sh1t I wanted to steal. But of course you can freely do all these things in secular countries!!!

The majority of Catholics in Ireland do not follow the Church or Believe in it or even God.

Most consider it no harm so they just row along with it and it's hard to stop the little one's getting loads of money as they progress through the sacraments ~ and sure it's often a family and social day out two, to boot so again, not a bother.

The Irish are particularly good at topping the hat and yes, sir, three bags full sir ~ when in fact they may hate your guts and the bags are left empty.

Really? They????? Foreigner yourself are you? Whether you are or not, I, as an Irishman, am highly offended by your last paragraph. Its very insulting, and I'm reporting it.

I was down in the census as Catholic, despite being Methodist. Why? Because Mammy filled it out, and while I live under her roof, I'm Catholic.

    Sense? None.

Same, I moved out years ago but mammy is still penciling me in as a catholic.
She will never accept me for the filthy atheist that I truly am. :( She actually gets very, very angry when I used the dreaded 'A' word.

Gay marriage is not illegal because of Christian beliefs. Its illegal because the govt says so. Its NOT illegal in England, and there's plenty of Catholics there. And my post was highlighting the NON-connection there is between illegal activities, and religion / secularism. Eventhough murder is outlawed in Christianity, its still outlawed in Buddhist, Hindu, AND atheistic countries. You're just trying to use any excuse to Catholic bash, and it aint workin'!

Now do you understand? Must be infuriating for you to accept the fact that 84% of Irish people consider themselves Catholic all the same.

Well that may be on paper, but on the ground Vatican Officials say we won't be a Catholic Country in less than ten years. Catholicism is in real crisis here.

A Muslim in the UK says Ireland will be Islamic within ten years as he finds us the most conducive to the Islamic Faith.

Since its only make-believe like Santa ( to many people ), what they write may not be what they are

I'm sure Fr. Francis Paul Cullen put down something other than "abusing children" on the application form under "hobbies & interests"

Couldn't get a divorce before 1996. Contraception before 1980. Still can't get an abortion, even if it kills the mother....

It's not about conversion. It's about imposing morality based on belief in fairy tales.
