Tomato salad at this time of the year is the actual food of the gods. Peeled tomatoes, loads of garlic, a good olive oil and a nice piece of bread to soak up the juice. Absolutely perfect food.

We've being going with just olive oil and sea salt.

If you like garlic you are missing a trick, but I am totally addicted to it. Just as well I live alone and have no friends. Or maybe it's why I live alone and have no friends... :pac:

    Have you tried recently.
I had terrible mouth ulcers right into my twenties but never get them now.
Maybe it's something you've grown out of?

Well I haven't had any since my son was born (when I was 32), but it was around then I discovered what caused them. I'm afraid to try again because they are so awful.

I was always the same with tomatoes but I've started taking the seeds out and they're fine now!

Not sure where to ask this, so I'm gonna ask here, apologies to mods if this is in the wrong place.

Has anyone been to the Buenos Aires Grill? Will be in Dublin at the weekend and looking for a cheap but tasty dinner, and thought this would be a good option.

    http://www.groupon.ie/deals/dealbank_en_ie/buenos-aires-grill-6/40643089?utm_source=localhub&utm_campaign=localhub&utm_medium=dublin

Reviews seem to be mixed and we don't want to go somewhere that we won't enjoy the food.

Any other recommendations for nice, cheap/reasonably priced restaurants within the city centre please?

When I was a kid I used to get hives from eating tomatoes. Whatever happened to hives?

Any of the Asian restaurants on Parnell St are nice and cheap. There's one on the corner of Cumberland Street North that does two helpings of meat/veg dishes with boiled rice for about €5. Very tasty!

Never hear kids/parents talk about them. Thought they'd died off.

Thanks a million Gloomtastic. Am looking at various places now, Brasserie7 is coming up on GrabOne. Is it good?

    http://www.grabone.ie/dublin/brasserie-7-35

I'm not looking for anything amazing, just something decent that won't have me hungry a few hours later.

musashi is good and very close to brasserie 7.

Not a restaurant but a canteen, Dheli o deli on Moore street is amazing value for money and great overall authentic food.

Cross the river and you're close to Bison, great BBQ

Sampled my first crop of strawberries yesterday evening! Got the 2 small ones to pick them too and they were delighted. Only got about 8 from 5 plants though, but there are more on the way. The taste was incredible. Gonna whip up some cream now over the weekend and watch some Wimbledon!!

great! I'll expand a little bit if you want as last night I was in a rush.

I have to say Bison has become a staple with me and you can't go wrong with their 2 meats + 2 sides for ~16 euro. Definitely will not be hungry a few hours later, as you said.

The above-mentioned Deli-o-Dheli also does an all you can eat buffer with 5 curries, 2 kinds of rice etc for 6 euro (one pass only though)

For a steak I like FX Buckleys, although a little bit more expensive, I really like their steaks , decent beer and wine selection.

AS for Braserie 7, I have never been, as it seems a little bit soul-less or corporate to me, no real character (from the outside, anyway).

A great summer salad is sliced beetroot, plenty of garlic, dressed in good olive oil and some vinegar, salt. That's it.

Thanks, I am not really a fan of beetroot, though I used to be. I find it a bit too sweet for my taste.

The sweetness is balanced by the garlic and vinegar in this recipe. (don;'t use balsamic, red wine vinegar is normally used). I do see your point though, it is such a sweet vegetable, no wonder it works well in deserts!

Yes, I have always wanted to try Chocolate/Beetroot cake - I bet it is good - this recipe is on my (never-ending) list.

I will give it a go with red wine vinegar the next time I have beetroot and report back. Thank you.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I will be looking into these places this evening.

Yeah its funny you say that about B7 because from reading about it online it was the vibe I got too that it was corporate. There is another place with a similar name going towards Rathmines (I can't remember the name) that is similar to B7 and again, has that same vibe and the few times I've passed that place near Rathmines, it always seems to be men/women in suits/formal clothing going in, so that's put me off for some reason and I can't put my finger on why it does.

It shouldn't put you off most of the time these people are going out on business dinners with guests and are usually fairly informal affairs and are only to entertain and feed the guest.

A friend mentioned a battered sausage the other day and I haven't been able to get it out of my head. I just drove to the nearest good chipper, but of course, it being a Friday evening, it was jammed so I left again. The curse of having a craving and being lazy!

Brasserie 66? Sounds like you might have been passing it around lunchtime, midweek, when a lot of office workers would be in. It's not a bad spot at all (although the service has been completely, walk-out, dreadful the last couple of times I was there so I wouldn't recommend).

If you're around Capel Street, where Brasserie 7 is, Brother Hubbard is lovely. It's more of a café vibe than a restaurant one but the food is top class. The Temple Bar food market will be on on Saturday if you don't mind eating & walking (You can get crepes, Indian food, Mexican food, burgers, roast pork etc.) Completely agree with Jezek re BBQ, Bison is great!

There are a few KC Peaches in the city centre, where you can choose between serve yourself hot buffets, salad buffets or get a (really decent) sandwich. If you like Japanese Food a bento box in Yamamori will fill you for about a week and comes in at just under €20. You could also try the Queen of Tarts for a savoury tart/sandwich followed by great cake.

Took Mrs Gloomster out for dinner this evening to a new Fish restaurant opened nearby. It was nearly ok. However one thing that was a revelation was corn on the cob grilled and brushed with Franks sauce. Delicious!

It's ridiculous that it puts me off and I don't know why it does tbh, but you are right in what you say, and I agree with you.

I had a look on Google and it seems it is B66, and you are right, lunch-time, mid week, it seemed very formal I guess and maybe that's why I was put off, I dunno.

I hope you don't take offence to this, but honestly, reading your posts in the forum, I thought you were female, and anytime I saw your photos I was like "she is such a great cook". I feel like a fool now. :o

My damn insomnia had me awake from 4am this morning. Having browsed boards for a couple of hours I decided to hit the Saturday market here in Bern. (It is usually over by the time I get up.) The variety of produce is amazing. Dozens if different types of cherries, lettuces, carrots & the like.

Off for a coffee & gipfli now then home for a lunch of freshly baked bread, smelly cheese & boar sausage. Half a kilo of peas in the pod to snack on later.
