Yes! I have a friend like this. I dont know what the bugger she does be at. I fell for it once or twice "oh I'm just dropping in to the cash machine" so I go with her....two minutes later she's still taking money from one account and putting it into another.

The problem is everyone has to be at least average, if you are below average there is something wrong. It ignores the whole idea of average.

That reminds me of the incentified increments system in the civil service, another pet hate. Apparently on a 5 point scale no manager scores their civil service employees below 3, so the whole wage bill goes up on aggregate cos the managers won't do their fuppin job i.e. grade their workforce according to a normal curve.....

this practice has now become so ingrained that the public service unions are fighting so that no employee can be scored below 3/5. You couldn't make it up, the unions want to deny the existence of below average performance.

p.s. Shur we all know our permanent government only perform above average, hence why they get paid 30-40% more than the 'average workers' in the private sector....

This probably deserves a thread of it's own, but I happen to believe that's no bad thing, it's what drives and fosters entrepreneurial culture, and in an environment where people are driven, motivated, and encouraged to fulfill their potential, I'll take the trade off between the cream rising to the top, and the people who aren't driven will stay at the bottom.

What we seem to have here in Ireland is a culture where people will try to drag people down to their level, and a welfare system that enables and almost encourages people to stay at that level rather than strive for better for themselves. I understand that America is a whole melting pot of cultures, but there's an air of positivity in the States which proportionately speaking is only matched in Ireland with an air of negativity.

That's probably one for the unpopular opinions thread...

Agree so much with your "unpopular" opinion!

Going to the mothers for dinner and having her recite the hour long conversation she had with the women in the coffee shop that morning word for word, thankfully I can zone out now and only pick up bits and pieces.

    eg.

Bettys sons wifes brothers aunty was in hospital for two weeks and she ended up in the same room as Marys husbands uncle and never even knew until Collette turned up to visit John and saw Helen in the bed opposite, but Helen was leaving that day her son Mark was picking her up, now Mark......zone out.......zone back in......and Betty had only €2 on her so had to put the strawberries back........and zone back out again.

I kid you not word for word remembers absolutely everything that was discussed and mentioned at the coffee shop, who she saw and who they were with and what they had to eat and drink. Think she could remember how to turn the TV on? Not a chance.

My voice is almost gone, and I have to speak a good bit this afternoon. Trivially annoying.

My wife's hearing is gone at the moment (sinuses or something, both her ears are blocked up), but it's doing my head in the way every time she talks she's shouting, had the tv up full blast last night... I can't listen to her because I have hypersensitive hearing under normal circumstances :(

On the upside, the expression on her face is priceless every time I'm talking to her and I'm moving my lips as if I'm talking, but she thinks it's because of her hearing being gone that she can't hear anything...

I know, I know - I'm going to hell :pac:

The other day I got a message from a person I know (not a friend I should point out) and she wanted me to translate about half a page of text from Spanish to English for a contract she had to send. I told her that I was on a trip to Portugal and if it was urgent. Of course it was urgent so I said that I would do my best.

Now anyone who read my previous post about needlessly getting up too early or Wednesday morning will know I had a very long day Tuesday but being the obliging sort of man I am I translated it for her on Tuesday night at about 11.30pm.
Only now I have realised that I haven't received even so much as a whatsapp to say thanks.

A week on and still not no much as a dickybird out of this one!

Spending a while footering about watering flowerbeds and pot plants. Go back inside, pleased with my nurturing.

Five minutes later it starts lashing with rain.

Gratuitous use of the word "random" - "so random", "most random". There's nothing random about it. In the above video clip, the idiot didn't just materialize out of thin air.

EDIT: I just clicked on the video, it's even worse paddywhackery than I thought! Times like that I wish I'd an elastic band that I could use my pen as a projectile...

Heh, secondary school was great for that kind of thing, got a bit dangerous when some kids got the idea to use compasses as projectiles though!

Oh, and that guy who slapped my ass with a plastic ruler when I stood up to tell him stop flicking my ears...

Yeah, school days were shìt! :pac:

The way people use "random" to describe anything other than "planned"? Yes, super annoying!

It's no joke, I've had my right ear blocked up since Friday and it's only been getting worse. I'd say I've lost about 80% of my hearing. I'm like an auld lad having to cock my head towards the person who is talking.

The worst is when there is no ambient noise and all I hear is a horrible hissing/ringing tone inside my head. That and eating or touching my head which sounds incredibly loud for some reason and I keep thinking I'm being very noisy.

I'll be calling into the pharmacist at lunch time for some industrial strength ear drops. Ear we go, ear we go, ear we go...........

"Pounds" (when did we get the euro??)

    "Me" instead of "my"

    "Buke" instead of "book"
