A lot of people are complaining about the sam and gilly storyline, but I thout that was one of the better parts of the episode, I felt they had done sam an injustice last season by having him fail with the ravens, so it was great to see him step up to the mark and release his inner zen badass

I think it makes sense for their later story too. It makes them more important for the TV show by being around more.

What did Sam actually do that was badass though... beside crossbow one guy through the head, that was it. He read a few books. Got a bit of sleep when the others were on their watch. Kissed Gilly .Ran around a bit. Ducked behind a wall and fed Pyp arrows. (disliked it when he said to Pyp "oh is the fight won then?"...don't be so sarcastic and get up off yer fat arse and start killing afew yourself so :D !!)Went up and down in the lift to get Jon. Released Ghost. That was about it. Alot of ducking and diving. He's craven.:p

Craven would have been hiding with Gilly (like Slynt). He's no warrior, we all know that. No mean feat to get across a courtyard with dozens of people looking to kill anyone in black. And he does make a fine wide target!

I think the way they ended the episode indicates we won't see Stannis until next season, anyone else think this?

Hiding behind a wall feeding Pyp arrows whilst the rest of his brothers put themsleves in the firing line, and then being a sarcastic pr*ck about it, is craven to me. He even had a go at Ollie. "You stay down here, arm yourself and slay a few wildlings..I just have to go to the sanctuary of the wall to deliver a message." Craven out! :p

I think we are definitely seeing Stannis next week. Although I also think the final scene has to be Lady Stoneheart.

You might as well ask what Maester Aemon did - he would be about as useful as Sam in a fight. Doesnt mean he is craven though.

No-one is saying Aemon is badass though.

No-one said that about Sam either, they said he was a "zen badass" which is a very specific type of badass :pac:

It's a pity that the non-readers are getting annoyed, but I can see where some of them are coming from. Book readers should definitely not be commenting on theories or giving any insight from the books of things that aren't shown in the show, even if they don't feel it's a spoiler.

It's difficult for the mods though, dunno how they're supposed to keep tabs on who's a reader or not!!!

Ah lads, why'd people go and spoil it. Or reference the books. Just leave the non-readers off. If they want to know certain things that relate to the show then tell them (I told them the signifcance about Lysa writing the letter because it flew over loads of their heads)...but leave book theories out of it. I dont understand why any reader would do that in a TV Show discussion thread for non-readers. Pissy thing to do.

Have a strict no theory policy in that thread.

Fantastic episode. The opening credits should just have gone to Castle Black and stayed there :) Was this the first episode that was pretty much all set in one location? I know Blackwater focused on one event, but there were several locations in within KL,aboard various ships, the mud gate and the riverbank etc.

Did someone actually tell you off for spoiling the books for them?

the way I saw it the Crossbows are a 2 man operation, Sam loading and Pyp firing them, thats like asking what the second guy on a vickers machinegun does.

the Sarcasm was integral in demonstrating how much Sam had grown as a Man, rather than cower in a corner he is composed enough to crack jokes and be an effective part of a combat team

as for Ollie, I saw that as more a case of telling him to Stop being afraid and arm himself, the Wildlings were intent on killing him, so that was a reasonable piece of advice.

as for sending someone else to the top of the wall, who else could he send?

but the most Zen Badass(TM) thing that he did was confront his fears and internal cowardice and choosing to do his duty above all else. the exchanges with Gilly and Pyp were insightful. especially when compared to Janos Slynt.

Personally, I'd be all in favour of banning book-readers from the Non-Readers' threads.

Not something you can police perfectly, but if someone posts in this thread or at any stage confirms they're a book reader they should get an immediate red card for posting anything in those threads IMO.

It's not fair on the mods having to police this cluster**** and it's certainly not fair on the non-readers.

What about people who haven't read all the books though? I've only read the first three and am a few chapters into the fourth. I do agree it's sh1tty people hinting at stuff they say are theories when its blatant they read the books and get it spot on but plenty of people can discuss the episode as it stands itself without ruining further events.
I've had a good few things spoiled for me from the readers thread but I dont particularly mind, if anything it's spurred me on to get through the books faster as I want to see how certain things play out.

Books only take a few weeks to get through. Show watchers don't have any say in pacing. Also theories might come more easily to readers of the first three book than the equivalent show watcher. ASOIAF and GoT are two different franchises now as far as I'm concerned.

I remember I had read most of the 2nd book after there were 2 seasons out and had never watched past the first episode of the show, got into a discussion with show watching friends and just had a completely different interpretation of the events that had happened. I was wondering why there was no talk of the whole Reek thing and the boys escaping from Winterfell with Jojen and Meera. Add that Tulisa woman and constant reference to Renly and Loras being gay and I was lost, thinking I'd missed a load of information.

If the purpose is to avoid spoiling than that's not a problem.

Emm.. Also, we discuss stuff from all the books in these threads. Have you not had things spoiled?

I think one of the main things deleted in the other thread, due to it being posted by a reader, was the "Rhaegar was Jon Snow's father" theory (just guessing that that was what was deleted). Seeing that... well... all the evidence to support that comes from Ned Stark (who is kind of dead by this stage) I can't in all honesty see what the problem is. I don't think that Feast for Crows or Dance With Dragons have much info to that end. Internet's just become infected with bookfag vs showfag pointless aggression since the beginning of this season.

Funny that, with the next episode, Bran Stark's narrative might have caught up with the books. Hell, north of the wall wise, book readers already were given the spoiler in the form of the Night's King.
