What happened in the other thread?

    http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/06/09/game-of-thrones-showrunners-finale-4-tease/
“It’s the best finale we’ve ever done, bar none,” Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss said in a statement. “The performances from our cast, the direction from Alex Graves, the VFX work, the new [music] cues from Ramin Djawadi—all of it came together in perhaps the finest hour we’ve produced. We’re immensely proud of ‘The Children.’ And a little intimidated by the episode, because now we have to get back to the business of season five and figure out a way to top it.”

    Sooooo excited!!!

Watched the full episode again last night, enjoyed it more the 2nd time tbh its a great hour of tv. The production design puts some movies to shame as well. That scene with the guys reciting the black as the giant is coming towards them in the tunnel is one of the standout scenes of the entire show not just this season.

It was great yeah, would have preferred we got to see a little bit of the actual fight though, even just Grenn killing the giant with his dying breath.

Probably tricky to do, seeing as the Giant required a lot of CGI.

You're probably right. And not seeing the fight meant that I was even sadder when I saw Grenn had died :(

Also the deaths of Pip and Grenn reminded me of something GRRM said in an interview - that the showrunners had killed off characters that were still alive in the books. (linky: http://teamcoco.com/video/george-r-r-martin-bloodthirsty)

Anyone else suspect he was talking about these two? Or do you think we have more unexpected deaths to come?

Could be more to come but I'd say it will be minor characters like Pyp and Grenn. They already did it Dany's blood riders at the start of season 2 before this and the guy she locked in the vault in Qarth who's name escapes me.

    Xaro Xhoan Daxos.

Be interesting to see who replaces him in Mereen, didn't he appear there with his boats to block the port or something?

He was locked in the vault and left there by Dany. My money would be on somebody freeing him and his involvement in Mereen being more personal.

Meant to say in the books sorry.
That could explain his escape alright if they don't use a different character next season.

I actually though they were going to have Pip and Grenn be part of the stabbing of Jon Snow. Make it more of a shock.

Watched the finale preview clip. Really does look like this is the end of the Hound. Looks like a showdown with Brienne.

I always held a little hope that we hadn't seen the last of The Hound. :(

I'd say she will best him and then when he's dying Arya will tell Brienne not to give him the "gift of mercy" because he hasn't earned it.

The Hound is left "dying", Brienne and Arya part ways somehow, and we get our Mountain vs Hound fight.

It would be a bit daft to kill off Grenn and Pyp at this point only to introduce new characters next season. I reckon that events at the Wall will be played out with the named characters we already know.

Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander after beating Alliser Thorne in the election. His first action is to execute Janos Slynt for desertion, "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword".

It may then be Thorne, the dedicated Night's Watchman, who reluctantly stabs Jon Snow "for the Watch".

As for Arya, well she wont go with Brienne as she's now a Lannister henchwoman.

The hound versus Brienne. That'd be interesting.

I wonder will they show the hound dying? That could spoil a theory for the book readers.

Why would Brienne allow Arya to go to Braavos though?

Brienne is clearly a woman who chose her own path in life and ignored societal expectations, maybe she'll see herself in Arya and let her find her own path.

I'd say there's a good chance that both herself and the hound will be grieviously wounded. So it'll follow a similar path to how she's introduced to Stoneheart, minus the heroism.

Arya will leg it on her own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭rawn

But when Brienne meets Stoneheart she'll be able to tell her that Arya's alive and where she was headed? Seem a fairly big deviation from the books, much like Jon knowing Bran and Rickon are still alive

I just realised that the next episode is on on Father's Day
    Pretty good timing/coincidence

Anyone think we may not see Tywin getting it?

Season finales havnt had any major happenings to date and after the red wedding Tywins demise is IMO the biggest thing that happens in the books to date.

I wouldn't be surprised so see it left with Shae getting killed and closing with a father and son face off.

Aye, I read an article earlier talking about an interview with Kit Harrington where he said the season finale doesnt wrap things up neatly, leaves stuff open for season 5.

The 3 things I expected for sure were:
    Stannis at the Wall.
    Tywin doesn't **** gold.
    Lady Stoneheart.

I'm thinking Stannis and/or Tywin could be left hanging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,474 ✭✭✭✭Witcher

Stannis definitely arrives at the Wall.

    On Tywin;
The S4 soundtrack that was released a few days ago has a track called 'You Are No Son of Mine' on it so draw your own conclusions on Tywin's fate from that.

I spoilered that because I know some people like the 'unknown element' of the episodes even if they've read the books.

Well the three things you mention are cliffhangers in themselves. I don't think I'd describe the book as wrapping things up neatly.

"Leaving stuff open" doesn't necessarily mean ending mid scene.

I'm not sure what you mean about the book? I'm talking about the tv show only.

I was just pointing out that things that people expect to see in the finale may not come to be.

I'd be pretty shocked if a season finale didn't leave stuff open for the following season tbh!

Well of course, but I would also expect resolution of certain storylines that have been building to a climax this season, such as The Wall, Tyrions trial etc... Stannis arriving doesn't "close" that story for next season, but him not arriving would leave those of us who expect his arrival hanging (just using that storyline as an example).

Perhaps my original post re Kit Harrington wasn't clear. My interpretation re "wrapping things up neatly" was not that the story ends outright, but I would expect certain storylines to reach a certain logical point, such as Stannis and Tywin. To me that wraps neatly my expectation of where things should be at by the end of the episode. Lady Stoneheart I'm less concerned about but given the twitter spoiler I just assumed she would appear this season.

if they don't do (sic) Tywin on fathers day they are missing a trick

I know I simply meant that the book ended with those things and that didn't wrap things up neatly, so the same can be said for the show if it ends the same way.

Oh I get you, by neatly wrapping things I understood: what we as book readers expect to see in the last episode.
