I expect SD will be around for some time to come, Imagine the cost of replacing all those old boxes, problem with SD is it look crappy on TV's over 32" and bit rates seem to be getting lower.

It'll be around for a while, but only so long I'd say.

If you were around during the switch from analogue to digital you'll know how efficient Sky can be. the cost of the boxes would (as always) be offset by the payback from new contracts. And just as in the analogue days anybody who is reluctant to switch over will find they're paying the same subscription for less channels. - I think it went down to about 5 or 6 on 19.2 in the end!

You've already noticed bitrates on SD getting lower, that's not an accident :)

Channel 5 was maybe last UK channel on 19.2E?
But it was free and Clear, though flagged as encrypted. All you needed to do to decrypt was disable the decoder! On Sky Digital you needed BBC /c4 Sky Solas FTV card or a UK sub.

Not just Sky Bitrates. ITV4 "artefacts" horrendous on Tennis. UTV version today much better.

UK DAB bitrates also much lower than when it started. All about saving money.

Seemingly the migration of sky sports HD channels has began with Sky Sports 4.

Ah OK, I only came across it online today - only a matter of time before all 50+ HD channels are switched.

Bt sport hd cleared for me in a dreambox after the card been paired with one of Sky's old pace boxes. This was last Christmas when Setanta had the one euro deal so may be something has changed since.

    Hi mate,

Thanks for the info - however tthe HD switchover only commenced at the end of April :)

But, just to clarify, I put the ( ? ) after BT Sports because we don't know yet what arrangement they have with Sky.

I'd imagine though that BT Sport would want to be made "secure" on Sky's platform and that Sky would want all HD channels on their platform made secure.

The last batch of customer HD channels to make the switch will be on Thursday 26th June if all goes to plan which it looks as though it is doing. There's 5 other batches before then though.

The switchover actually started on the 1st April but it was just Sky Insider that made the switch.

We all missed Sky Insider :D

Judging by your other posts you do have inside knowledge but do you mind if I ask what is your source of information?

And could you let us know what the plans are for BT Sport, the other ITVs etc if you aware of these?

If you're correct it looks like it will be complete before the end of the World Cup

Looks like you have a small bit of inside information ;) ... do you know if sky are interested/worried about reports that Sky Italia has already been broken with the new system?

I'm part of some private communities for Sky, were given more information than the public, some of which can be conveyed to the public, used to fix faults and help inform them ect.
The rest is subject to NDA so can't be disclosed, such as some things which are being worked on.

I have a table listing what channels will be updated when, this is because there's a possibility that some people may loose access to the HD channels when the encryption changes even if they have a compatible box, this will happen if the there viewing card wasn't correctly paired during the first phase. These people need to be prompted to phone Sky and have there viewing card repaired.

The Thomson boxes will also permanently loose the HD channels which use the new pairing mechanism. So subscription customers with one of these boxes will need to be prompted to phone sky and arrange for a free replacement.
Sky's also started displaying an on screen message regularly on the old Thomson HD boxes prompting them to phone Sky for a replacement.

I don't think I should post the exact dates ect, but I will say that itv2 HD, itv3HD and itv4HD are on the table for the same date to be updated to the new encryption. ItvHD isn't on the table.

Interestingly BTSport isn't on the table.

Thanks for the full and detailed response mate :)

It's good to have some inside knowledge to apply to all of our fumblings in the dark :D

So many questions; so little space!

Do you know if there are plans to start migrating the premium SD channels once HD is complete?

ITV HD is FTA so this surely explains that one.

That is probably my fault :D

I asked about the ITVs (should've specified the encrypted ones) ;)

    I don't I'm afraid.

Going by how long its been since the last viewing card change only, it seems like we're due one this year or next. So even if the new system is broken Sky's got another bullet in the gun to have a go.
Who knows what improvements to the system will happen with new viewing cards.

Just out of curiosity is it every Thursday that sky are scheduling the movement to the new system all the way through?

It's been Tuesdays as well as Thursdays the past couple of weeks - and if there are 5 batches to go it would need to be to make it for the date given :)

I edited my previous post so you may have missed this question. Do you know if there are any plans for premium channel SD migration to the new system?

I'm not aware of there being any plans to migrate SD channels to the new system.

The supported HD boxes are the only boxes which have the Receiver ID and associated software on them to support the new system.

If they wanted to implement the new pairing/encryption system on the old SD boxes they would need to develop it for the old OpenTV middleware and update the SD boxes.

The whole thing's been a long time in the works, the Receiver ID was added in the R005 software if I remember correctly.
I'm sure Sky has some secret plan for the future.

It also appears that they are only pairing HD and Premium channels.

All other channels can continue to be shared, I find this strange because if thy really wanted to stop CS they should have paired all channels.

Premium SD will stay for now.

Of course BT channels are not Sky owned channels, but a competitors.

A conspiracy theorist might say that its not in Sky's interest to protect BT from piracy on 28.2E, especially when said competitor is going after Sky's 1 & 2 Sports channels to show on its Youview box under the wholesale distribution Ofcom ruling made some time back.

Hmmm my €500 spent on my Vu+ Duo2 in December last year doesnt seem like such a great thing now, I cannot watch sporting events in SD, its awful on a 60" TV.

    Gutted.

    ITV2, ITV3 & ITV 4 are not Sky-owned channels ;)

The UKTV fleet of channels are not Sky-owned ;)

BT Sports are on the Sky platform and it is the platform that they are making secure. I am surprised BT aren't on the list but there's obviously something in the contract relating to this :)

Well you still have a great satelite box, that can do so much more than a Sky box. Its dissapointing that you cant use a sky card in a the non Sky equipment because the ability to do things like FTP to the box, copy your own media files to it etc and the fact that recorded programmes arent encrypted was a great feature of the Vu boxes of this world..

I've read some chatter online that there is already a defeat for the new encryption method so no doubt in time it will make it way to the wider world

Sky really are expensive though, my inlaws only watch rte/uk fta channels but also like at the races, and sky sports...

Its costing them a small fortune each month for about 4 channels that they cant get FTA

I'm tempted to try sky and see would they do 12 months at half price for me, as thats the only way i'd sign up at the moment.. otherwise its just to costly...

Whatever about the UKTV channels, the ITV 2/3/4 HD channels were the subject of a "non exclusive" arrangement initially only available on Sky, which are now also available with Virgin Cable. They are still part of an arrangement that they are interested in promoting as part of their package, given they are not part of Freesat. Nobody is interested in this content from a piracy perspective as it is not premium content.

I would counter that it is more about Sky making their premium content secure. :) If BT gets less subs through CS as a result of non listing of that ID then it is not Sky's problem. After all there is no love lost.

Lets not forget BT has already lodged a complaint with Ofcom under the Competition Act, alleging that BSkyB is abusing its dominance to damage it as a rival.
