I see sky sports 5 needs registration to be completed to get it.Would imagine that the channel should just come online itself. Could this be a sneaky way for sky to trace / pair viewing cards with boxes.

The registration is for the broadband offer in the UK.

Only way to settle this is with evidence. Take some current pics of the hd channels with the info bar on screen showing time and date!

Would it not be best just to ignore him?

It's not possible to receive the lost channels other than through an official receiver.
