Cos they're going back to college and aren't in a position to be looking for jobs.

Cos it's Jobseekers Allowance i.e it is available for people who are actively seeking work, whereas students who are returning to school/college are not. Basically they'd be funding every students summer-long booze sesh.

As far as I know they can if they have previously worked at some stage.

Open to correction on that, but pretty sure a friend of mine claimed it last summer, though she'd have built up quite a few stamps doing part time and summer work in previous years.

Because they quite clearly aren't looking for full-time employment.

If they're financially fcked they can talk to their community welfare officer for supplementary funds.

Then goes back to college. It's not the same thing whatsoever. Should they get the dole during college Cos they can't find weekend work aswell?

No they can't, your friend most likely was collecting someone else's money (which happens quite a bit) or lied. It's most likely the former.

Oh come off it. That's summer work. Job seekers is for people looking for full time work over hopefully a more sustained period than 3 months.

Students are doing something productive with their lives, the dole is not aimed at that section of society.

How are students different from anyone else in this regard? Most dole money is spent on drink anyway, students aren't unique.

Students can't draw the dole as being in a full time college course is considered the same as being in full time employment in this country.

I'm finding it extremely difficult to get any summer work, any vacancies that come up are all internships, jobs that would of originally been filled by students such as waitresses, kitchen porter etc.

Again, cos the dole is jobseekers. The SUSI grant is there for students.

If I had had a free 150 euro a week when I was 18 I would have ended up dead in a ditch pretty fast.
