They put "Free View" into the programme name on the EPG. Yes, even on cable, where all subscribers have Setanta Ireland as part of their basic packages anyway. Their current coverage of French Open tennis appears to be covered, for some reason - that definitely isn't funded by Sound and Vision!

The EPG is not visible to those without a 'FTV' card in a Satellite receiver, and I have not found any other programme details for the BAI S&V content. :(

I wondered about this and the only conclusion I can come up with is they have free TV rights like ITV4 in the UK.

It is still encrypted/scrambled - checked here a short time ago

Yes indeed - an insistence that they be available Free to Air over their respective platforms should be the minimum requirement.

Of course, there is the possibility (probability) that Setanta assured the BAI the programming would be available for "free" and/or the BAI don't know the difference between FTV and FTA. :)

It IS a requirement. Unfortunately, the BAI obviously are not aware of what people looking for a card are being told. This email below is a response from Setanta to somebody who approached them in April 2013.

Just got this reply back from Setanta.

Thank you for contacting Setanta Sports.

We have received your request for a FTA viewing card under the BAI Sound and Vision Scheme.

The BAI is the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and Setanta broadcast a number of documentaries in funded by them, examples include The Club, An Exile’s Home in the Bronx, Man on A Mission and Yes I Can.

Please be advised that Setanta Sports is a subscription service and if you wish to view our fantastic sporting content then please contact us to discuss the subscription package options available. You will NOT receive our sporting content under the Sound and Vision scheme.

We are happy to order a card for you however this card will only function in a compatible SKY set top box and if you have an existing Sky viewing card then you will already have access to the content we broadcast in conjunction with the BAI Sound and Vision Scheme. We must also advise that if we request a card for you and you do have an existing Sky card then this may cause loss of service on your current viewing card.

We have the best premium live sport on TV including top flight Barclays Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League football, the best golf action from the Masters and the Open exclusively live, deferred coverage of the Rabodirect Pro 12 and action from the GAA.

If you wish to proceed with ordering the FTA card we would need you to contact our customer service department on the number listed below.

We are open from 9:30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

So people are being told that they require a Sky box.

I also note that other posters who had the card ran them in other boxes and they are not updating the entitlements, they die and are obviously as useful as a chocolate teapot.

This is totally not the spirit of the scheme. If these cards require a Sky box, then they are not true FTV cards and accordingly it is only available to people with Sky boxes.

IF the encryption is not turned off for these funded programmes, then the broadcaster has not fullfilled their end of the bargain, imo. As it is, and given the amounts of money being divied out, I am very uneasy with the whole idea of FTV card/part time FTA being used to bypass the purposes of this scheme which is to fund and broadcast independent programming to be viewed on a free to air basis by the people of Ireland. Non subscribers tend not to have encypted channels tuned in (even Sky subscribers but non Setanta subscribers would behave similarily)! I would like to see a comparison of the audience figures for those funded on each platform. I'd say that would make every interesting reading.

They probably use CrossEPG via an Enigma 2 receiver to pull the EPG stream from satellite

Anotehr very valid point! Of those using non Sky boxes, the only people who (having that encrypted channel in their channel list in the first instance) would be able to view the 7 day epg would be those running Enigma and Cross epg plugins. Its now and next for others, so how would they know when the funded programme was on ?
This has gone way off topic, but I wish to add a little information here for those interested.

It hasnt really. Sky have for a long time thrown up security issues and the use of CI+ etc in proprietary box only as the only methods acceptable to them. Setanta using their Videocrypt on their platform in this way is not consistent. Blind eye ?

    Excellent points.

IMO discussion of Setanta and dubious S&V funding, Sky / SSS/ NDS requirement that card only is used in a Sky box according to Sky/NDS requirements is a valid part of this discussion.

More so than any "impact" on Card Sharing or actual piracy of any kind. There is no theft of service nor piracy or copyright infringement using a Sky card in a different box only to receive channels authorised and without any "Sharing". It is definitely though contravention of Sky conditions which calls into question the Sound & Vision scheme funding.
The Setanta channel is neither true FTV nor ever "in the clear" FTA. There is no such thing as a FTA card. The Sky Platform is closed Pay TV system. The original UK PBS FTV card system is gone. That was used by channels that were 24x7 FTV. Setanta is not a FTV channel.

There appears top be a big difference in the email you quoted and the one I reproduced here
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=90633447&postcount=94

    which says
As previously advised, the box itself does not need to be a Sky branded box and you do not require a Sky subscription to receive our services.

BTW, the date of the email addressed to me was 31/07/2013.

It would be nice if Setanta could be consistent in what they advise people.

Yes I read that email. They couldnt even distinguish between FTA and FTV. They used the term FTA card ! Someone who having consulted their "technical" department didnt understand what they were told, otherwise it wouldnt be littered with inconsistent terms.

How long have you got the card ?

    Is it still working ?

What software are you using on your ariva that is allowing this card update ?

What is the Entitlements date on the card ?

It may be that they didnt issue these cards in a consistent way. If that is true then someone is going to be disappointed because as I understand it, these cards also clear Liverpool Tv and a few other channels ......

For the pruposes of the S&V scheme, none of this is satisfactory. For Setanta they have also nullified the T&C's of the their own card issue which require a Sky box. So which is it. They cannot have it both ways..... :)

And by the way Since November 2013 > yet another inconsistency.
    Ron603 wrote: »
Long story short I e-mailed Setanta asking about the card under the BAI Scheme but the replied saying they no longer supply them. Should I call them and check again?

So how are people going to view these programmes or know about them ? Turning off the encryption on a per programme basis is not good enough. People do not have encrypted channels tuned, waiting for them to clear for 1 hour! Please make that point when replying to the scheme review.

On 15/02/2012 I received a notification that I should have it within 7 days.
    Is it still working ?

Yes; as I mentioned in another post my wife is using it in the kitchen and it is still in the Ariva 120 STB that I put it in initially.
What software are you using on your ariva that is allowing this card update ?

I have not introduced anything into the Ariva ..... it has an old stock firmware which I updated once I think after receiving the STB.

    Does the card update? OTA?
What is the Entitlements date on the card ?

There is no obvious expiry date or 'entitlement' on the card, so I have no idea what you mean, sorry.

Yes, when last I checked there were a number of channels cleared by the card ..... including two Sony channels, one of which is definitely still being cleared as I saw SWMBO watching a Sony channel recently.
For the pruposes of the S&V scheme, none of this is satisfactory. For Setanta they have also nullified the T&C's of the their own card issue which require a Sky box. So which is it. They cannot have it both ways..... :)

Unfortunately at present they appear to have it so ...

In truth I have no idea at all when a S&V programme might be scheduled for transmission when using my own HTPC.
Because the Setanta channels are scrambled/encrypted (I guess) I do not receive an EPG ..... the present programme name will be there but that is all.
I have searched the Setanta site for some information about upcoming S&V programmes, but found nothing at all.

So, for all practical purposes, the S&V programmes are not available to me. I have not looked at the Ariva in the kitchen to see what might be shown there ..... any time I attempt to go near it I am banned and sent back to my own set up :D

I will definitely be making some submission to the BAI on the matter of Access to the S&V programmes from Setanta.
IMO, there is not much point in having subtitles or sign language (to me) if I cannot receive the broadcast in the first place (without purchasing a STB from a specific supplier to allow use of the Setanta-supplied card).

The whole thing is a mess which is obviously getting worse and it is long past time that the BAI dealt with the situation properly ........

the transmissions need to be FTA, not FTV, and there needs to be some specific location to get information on upcoming transmissions of programming created under the scheme.

Setanta are obviously by accident or deliberately breaking their T&C with Sky so as to get "free" money from BAI.

This might've been partly due to nothing new to discuss.

    Until now....

6 more movie channels went this morning:
    Crime & Thriller
    Drama & Romance
    Family
    Greats
    Select
    Showcase

I should've specified but yes, for now it is just the HD channels switching over :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,988 ✭✭✭mikeym

Some Pirates are still claiming their illegal packages are still showing HD movies.

Just goes to show how honest they are :D

    It's only been a few hours :D

There are still a couple of HD movie channels running independent of the new encryption for now anyway...

Sports will follow pretty quick imo, The dropping of the HD package then will probably increase drastically!!

I am willing to see all HD closing down like Sky Italia, maybe once for all, once so called Hobbyists, release the solution IF ANY. In the meantime we have to use our Sky Boxes.

It's been said that it will may be the other way round, the encryption is said to be cracked but they will not release it to the hobbyists, they're looking for the highest bids from the pay servers. Can't say any more about that

Is it only HD channels on the Sky package changing over or will others change over such as BT Sport and ESPN?

I hadn't got the setanta channels this evening, the box kept saying tune failed.

I did a full rescan of 28e using network scan and they came back on the same frequency (12633 h 22000) but the fec changed to 4/5.

I think this is the first time I've seen 4/5 on 28e. All back working ok at the moment.

    HD only for the moment.

As a service provider Sky would need to secure all HD subscription services.

I would guess, though, that the BT Sport package, Asians etc would be left until they are 100% sure there are no problems.

I just checked with a friend of mine and he says his setanta is perfect the way it was.

Must be a problem with the tuner in my azbox premium plus. Has anyone else had any problems?
