Lanzarote is a different story though....
Lanzarote is short haul. Four hours is nothing!

Flew with them a couple of years ago to Lanzarote and it was grand. I must say that the fact that the seats don't go back is a huge bonus on that flight, it means you don't have your knees chopped off by whatever idiot infront decides to put his seat back without any care for the folks behind and then bounce about on it like a trampoline while they get comfortable.

As for food, eat at the airport and bring a snack on board if you think you'll feel peckish.

I'm trying to decide about that. Should it be Ryanair is rubbish, or Ryanair are rubbish?

It's the Ryanair AH thread. I 've long since stopped following the Ryanair thread in consumer issues. Ages ago. Good old Afterhours forum where the spice of boards.ie is! :-)

    They are grand at best,

I take 50-100 flights a year and if I had the choice I would take Aer Lingus, but if I am going on holidays and I have no air miles and there is a noticeable difference between ryanair and aer lingus, I would fly them.

It's not just the trumpet, but what annoys me is that they don't shut up for the whole flight. Hey buddy, it's 6.00 in the morning, I don't care about buying a god damn scratch card

    They have changed that recently.

Flew at 2100hrs with them last week from Malta and they announced after the safety announcement that it was a night-time flight and interruptions would be kept to a minimum, and they were no scratch cards or trumpet.

Don't understand the hatred Ryanair get, they have changed flying in Europe for the better and made it affordable. In the 80's it was £200 to fly to London!
As for food, it's sh1te but that's how they make their money and keep fares low.If you can't go on a flight to Lanzarote for four hours without food or just eating your own then that's your problem.

I flew with them last week. Reserved seating, two pieces of hand luggage and it was really cheap. No hassle at all, and when we got there we were only 20 minutes away from where we were staying so it suited us well.

I think it's interesting that they have changed their approach over the past few months. Ryanair threads were traditionally split into two camps:

    - they're brilliant, O'Leary should be made High King of All Ireland and I love that my ticket is subsidised by those too stupid to read a few simple rules;
    - flying with them is an adversarial experience and I'd be willing to pay a couple of extra quid for a slight bit of increased comfort - which I may get back in some cases when factoring in proximity to target destination;

Seems to me the airline has recognised one side of the debate as being correct...

Yes, often it was, and it's obviously much more affordable now.

However, you could get APEX return fares back then for around IR£70, which included checked baggage, a meal and free drinks - and there was often a de-facto flexibility with the ticket.

I flew with them a few weeks ago and the trumpet was not played.

Was waiting for it to be blasted out of the speakers on landing, bit disappointed :D

If they could stop the people giving the pilot a round of applause on landing, I'd be happier!

Also what's with all the trumpet hatred?

It makes me laugh every time I hear it and it gets a funny reaction from other passengers every time.

Those complaining about it being on early flights etc should not complain is they need to be awake then to get off the plane shortly anyway!

I don't mind Ryanair. I am flying to Barcelona in August for €106 return. Wahoooo

Im moving to the UK at the end of summer. Its €24 for the flight.

It costs more to bring my bags than the cost of the flight and im heavier than the the bags.

Got the trumpet on Sunday coming back from Stansted

4kwp South East facing PV System. 5.3kwh Weco battery. South Dublin City.

No problems with them and fly with them regularly.

Given the low cost of their fares most of the time I'm willing to put up with the no frills aspect and their methods.

Rarely for more than an hour/90 minutes anyway so it's fine.

They played the trumpet on Monday fwiw. Afternoon flight.

Im not complaining, i was just saying i would want to eat on a 4 hour flight. Which I would consider medium haul. Espeically since new york is an extra 2 hours.

Ryanair.....leaves a lot to be desired. Shabby. It disrespects it's customers and uses every opportunity to get money from them. Instead of cleaning up its act with customer care, it's the same as ever.

    Dont fly with them then.
If they get you from A to reletively near B cheaper than anyone else they are good enough for me.

I fly return to leeds bradford frequently enough and in the winter have flown return for E33! A one way taxi home to Rathfarnham would cost me more than that!

As opposed to who? Aer Lingus, constantly striking, that isnt disrespectful for the people who fly with them who pay their wages?

I actually would be more annoyed at the trays and all being put out on a four hour journey, if you need to eat that much during a four hour flight buy a snack.
No need to put full dinners out.
If your going to Lanzarote, eat in the airport and get a meal when you arrive, the food would be better/cheaper than any airline.

They have dinners? I would get maybe a portion of chips(contains about 5), a cup of tea and a chocolate bar.

Fair enough ... I'm too poor to fly anywhere haha so can't really give my opinions on Ryanair as an airline :P

Join the club - we got t-shirts.
Been flying the Liverpool Dublin route a long time. Flight time on the website is 55 mins. Never taken longer than 30 mins even the pilot says before take off " should take about 30 mins", that's why they have the best on time record.

Still they can fly me for between €10-€20 so I'll let them away with it.

Yep, they understate their journey times so that they have that extra 10-20 mins leeway. I'm surprised that no regulatory fecker has spotted this or pulled them up. I've never noticed this of any other airline.

In fairness planes aren't a place for fine dining. For the sake of four hours wait and get a nice meal at your destination.

Not now. But the days when flying was something.

When they invented Irish coffees at Shannon just to give the big knobs on the PanAM clipper something to do while it refueled.

When flying was a pleasue, an experience. Halcyon days

    .

Sorry I meant a positive one.

I remember flying Luton to Knock years ago and a cabin steward reached across us to adjust something or other. Seeing the thick dirty black ring on the end of his cuff put me off ordering anything to consume during the flight. Afterwards we saw a docu on C4 that said how Ryanair cabin crew had to pay for their own training and buy their own uniforms.
Im lucky if i see a plane once a year.
Me too - but I can't say I miss it :pac:

I think Ryanair do the basics fine. Stick to their rules and no one hassles you. What kind of service do you want from them? The only interaction you usually have with them is when they check your ticket at the gate and then when boarding the plane.
Agreed, what do people expect, a butler esque flight attendant named Jeeves with a monocle welcoming people aboard in his finest queens english and rolling out the red carpet?! get over it, flying is about as exclusive these days as taking the bus!
