A truly awful story. I wonder, does it make those christians who scream 'we are being persecuted' for simply not being allowed to discriminate against some people as much as they used to, even a little bit embarrassed?

    MrP

No, it just allows people like Rupert Shortt to scream even louder that "christians are the most persecuted group in the world", and then stupidly blame anti-christian persecution on secularism, despite it being always inter-religious in nature.

A girl brought up as a christian by her christian mum and islamic dad faces the death penalty for failing to announce that she's islamic. Added horror - being held in prison with her two-year old son and she's eight months pregnant herself. And she's facing being whipped for having sex outside of (islamic) marriage as she's married a christian guy.

    Welcome to Sudan.

    http://www.independent.ie/world-news/africa/pregnant-doctor-to-be-hanged-for-not-being-a-muslim-30278946.html
A heavily pregnant Christian doctor in Sudan has been sentenced to hang for not being raised as a Muslim. Meriam Yehya Ibrahim (27) was convicted on charges of apostasy, or the abandonment of religion, by a court in Khartoum.

Following her conviction on Sunday, she was given three days to recant her faith. "We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged," Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa told the woman.

Mrs Ibrahim also faces a sentence of 100 lashes for adultery on the grounds that her marriage to a Christian man from South Sudan is considered void under Sharia law.

She was brought up as a Christian by her mother. However, because her father was Muslim, she was considered by the court to be the same. Amnesty International says that Ibrahim is eight months pregnant and in detention with her 20-month-old son.

"Adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all, let alone meet the international standard of most serious crimes in relation to the death penalty. It is flagrant breach of international human rights law," the group said. In a joint statement, the embassies of the US, UK, the Netherlands and Canada expressed "deep concern".

"We call upon the government of Sudan to respect the right to freedom of religion, including one's right to change one's faith or beliefs," it said.

That beggars belief, in more than one sense of the phrase.

The death sentence for apostasy being passed despite the fact that under islamic law, just like with judaic law, your religious identity passes down through the mother, therefore the woman would either have had to convert herself or her mother have converted before she could apostise herself.

You know its a gam-on when even those whose job it is is to know the rules can't keep them straight.

At least he has the courage of his (insane) convictions -- while a number of christian posters here on A+A have admitted they'd be prepared to murder whomever their deity told them to, I think the majority probably wouldn't. Small mercies.

"THE future leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland has called for parents to take more responsibility for controling what young people are accessing on the internet.

Speaking at the annual Soul Waves Radio conference in Dublin with the Church of Ireland Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe Dr Trevor Williams, Dr Martin called for the church to give soul to the internet as part of its mission of evangelisation.
"We can see how lost that world can be with the pervasive prevalence of pornography polluting the spirit of so many of people – where human sexuality is degraded and relationships are cosmetic," he said.

"The fourth and final report on implementation of the 99 recommendations arising from the Ryan report is expected to be laid before the Oireachtas by Minister for Children Charlie Flanagan next month.

Meanwhile, the 18 religious congregations which ran the residential institutions for children investigated by the commission have given no indication that they intend improving on their overall total offer of € 480.61 million to the €1.45 billion costs of redress to victims.

It means the congregations remain €244 million short of their € 725 million share of all costs involved.
This Government believes, as did its predecessor, that costs should be shared on a 50:50 basis between the State and those who were responsible for the management of institutions where children were abused. "

26 women in love with priests write to the pope. Forlornly, I'd have said :(

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/religious-affairs-correspondence-26-women-in-love-with-priests-1.1801803
Twenty-six Italian women who say they are “in love” with priests have written to Pope Francis, calling on him to change Catholic Church teaching on the priestly vow of celibacy, according to religious website Vatican Insider. The women call on Pope Francis to help “break down the wall of silence and indifference” generated by their fate.

Calling themselves a “small sample” of many women “living in silence”, they write: “We humbly place our suffering at your feet in the hope that something may change, not just for us, but for the good of the church.” Precise figures on the number of priests who have abandoned their vocations and been laicised to live with a woman are not available. Between 1970 and 1995, an estimated 46,000 priests abandoned the priesthood, but many did so for reasons other than a relationship with a woman. Vocatio, an Italian movement for married priests, claims there may be up to 8,000 former priests in Italy alone who have abandoned the church for a woman.

However, it seems unlikely that the letter will prompt Pope Francis to instigate radical change. In the book On Heaven and Earth, written with Argentine rabbi Abraham Skorka, he appears to defend celibacy, saying: “For now, I am in favour of maintaining celibacy, with all the pros and cons that come with it, because in 10 centuries there have been more positive experiences than errors... “Tradition plays an important role. Catholic ministers gradually chose celibacy. Until 1100 some opted for it and some didn’t.”

Even though he writes that, “personally I never considered marrying”, the pope does not entirely shut the door on the argument, saying the celibacy question is one “of discipline, not faith”, which “can be changed”.

And the mass-mailing of "priests in love with other priests".......

The agony columns 'Dear Maggie, for years now me and my bethrothed have enjoyed a wonderful and loving relationship, but I feel his recent promotion at work has created a void between us. His authority over me as my Bishop....'

Conchita Wurst caused Balkan floods after Eurovision win, say church leaders
Conchita Wurst is responsible for flooding that left over 50 people dead earlier this month, church leaders in the Balkans have claimed.

The Austrian drag artist, whose real name is Thomas Neuwirth, seized international attention after winning Eurovision 2014with his hit Rise Like a Phoenix.

However, several church leaders have now claimed the recent devastating flooding across the Balkans, which was the worst in a century and left over 50 people dead, was "divine punishment" for Conchita's victory.

What an idiot Wurst must be. Why didn't he realise that his song would cause divine retribution in the form of floods!

It must be part of the Gay Agenda.

They realise how much of passive aggressive ass that makes their god out to be. Upset with someone? Don't confront them directly, instead go off and throw a big strop and ruin a load of other innocent people's day.

You gotta love the dissonance. Worshiping a being who slaughters hundreds. Then justifying that beings love for all. Peace on earth!

You've got to like their god. He doesn't punish Austria; he punishes the Balkans instead.

If pot-smoking Ming gets elected to the European parliament then Lucan will probably suffer bad flooding.

Belief in the ridiculous isn't confined to the religious:

    http://defensetech.org/2014/05/21/darpa-unveils-hack-proof-drone/
Many things have computers inside and those computers are networked to talk to other things. Whenever you have that situation, you have the possibility for remote vulnerabilities where somebody can use the network connection to take over and get the device to do what the attacker wants instead of what the owner wants [...]

The software is designed to make sure a hacker cannot take over control of a UAS. The software is mathematically proven to be invulnerable to large classes of attack [...]

believing wholeheartedly something written by the marketing division of a software company, is actually one of the few things that makes less sense than religion.

In a separate development, police were investigating an arson attempt on Tuesday, at Jerusalem's Church of the Dormition which occurred shortly after the pope finished celebrating mass in the nearby upper room.
"Someone entered the church and went down to the crypt, took a book that is used by pilgrims to a small room next to the organ, and set some wooded crosses on fire,"

Whoooaah, that's two fires, in two separate buildings, that were discovered shortly after Frank had left the buildings. This is starting to look mighty suspicious.
Was he ever vetted by the police, before he got the job?

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I can't believe what I was reading! http://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2014/03/15/comment/coucil-of-islamic-ideology-declares-womens-existence-anti-islamic/
As the meeting concluded CII Chairman Maulana Muhammad Khan Shirani noted that women by existing defied the laws of nature, and to protect Islam and the Sharia women should be forced to stop existing as soon as possible. The announcement comes a couple of days after CII’s 191st meeting where they dubbed laws related to minimum marriage age to be un-Islamic.

After declaring women to be un-Islamic, Shirani explained that there were actually two kinds of women – haraam and makrooh. “We can divide all women in the world into two distinct categories: those who are haraam and those who are makrooh. Now the difference between haraam and makrooh is that the former is categorically forbidden while the latter is really really disliked,” Shirani said.

It made very entertaining reading... Does this group actually have any influence beyond its hospital ward?

    I particularly liked
Officials told Khabaristan Today that the council members deliberated over various historic references related to women and concluded that each woman is a source of fitna and a perpetual enemy of Islam. They also decided that by restricting them to their subordinate, bordering on slave status, the momineen and the mujahideen can ensure that Islam continues to be the religion of peace, prosperity and gender equality.
