Lovely photos, not often you see four generations together. What age is the oldest cow?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,274 ✭✭✭Bodacious

She is 2002 the red white head on right.., a lim out of a Hr x Sh , one in middle is black white head 2008 out of lim again and her first calf was fl22 black whitehead heifer on left 2011.

Old 2002 cow will get sim from now on as is a very good cow.. Loads of milk, great size and power and would calf a fridge!

Nice red lim heifer out of our own stock bull and a lim x sim springer. About 10 weeks now and one for the bull in the future hopefully! 8168246F-EA04-4A94-BE90-F942299661AA_zpsg3lvwquh.jpg. 94A864E2-9E49-4CD7-92B4-AAA6A6F5DDF1_zpsxfeog9id.jpg My first attempt at licking. Done about 6 weeks ago, seem to be getting the desired result. 2473D754-CEB6-47B9-A3B7-834812F50260_zpscftsaerx.jpg

Have never posted pics up but must try and get around to it,would have a good candidate born today,Ch bull calf by easy calving stock bull and SH cow, another bull went wrong two yrs ago so some cows calving late, cow calved this am,v tight pull on jack with a neighbours help...gave cow time calving but she can't get up...hopefully will in time, have her in on straw bed,..calf in separate pen for safety...he's biggest calf I've ever seen born here!!!..took 3 good men to lift him into wheelbarrow to move him...cow had been on restricted diet...and bull usually easy calving, suppose its fact she was eating good silage since October.

Had the knackery man here today (not a social call) and he says that in all the years he has been on the lorry, this spring has been exceptional with the number of huge calves, and cows putting out their calf bed. "I am calling for the calf one day, and the cow a week later"

    Sorry to hear that.
Hopefully my lady doesn't take that turn, she's a great breeder and docile....wonder is it the great silage/hay last winter?

I was debating whether or not to show this heifer this year in a few local shows.
Worth the effort would ye think? She's not had any meal or anything, born last week of March.

To me she's lacking a bit in the lower leg and behind the rib but some feeding could fill her out there.

Have a great calf off pch this year from a heifer. Not that easily calved though, he went the full length of the jack!!

Ouch, how was the heifer after?

She was sectioned unfortunately. She's ERE out of a CH/LM dam.

Fine from my perspective anyway!!! If she could talk she might say differently. She was up straight away, a bit shaky for an hour but took to the calf straight away. We always put salt on the calf when its born which we find helps.

What's the idea of the salt

    As in table salt?
Never heard of that but could see how it would help.

The cow will lick the calf and take to him quicker. We would only do this with a cow that we have had to use the jack on. Especially useful getting a heifer to take to the calf. Works for us anyway.

Thought the salt would stop the cow from licking it

Not what I wanted to hear...AI man assured me I'd have no prob,I was leaning toward gza AA, under 1% CD but he said PCH will be as easy...ever from bbx...

Not our cows anyway!! We're doing it like that for years without a problem.

Like painting, try a bit on the next cow and see what happens!!!

So it's just a light spreading of table salt you use to make her lick away at the calf

Ai man said same here. I had another heifer the same day and on advice of ai man put a shorthorn straw on her as he reasoned she was a bit tight. She calved away herself. Sure all you can do is manage her diet and hopefully all will go well.

I bumped into a local Ai man yesterday and asked him what lim bull was popular, he said lads who used FL25 before asked for him again. I asked if that bull was hard calved, he said he didn't know as he doesn't be there when the cows are calving.

Yep. Had one last night, wasn't doing a great job of licking the calf, added salt and she started to give him a good rub down. It could well be coincidence but if it ain't broken don't fix it!!!
