No release date yet, the A3 that's announced is a single tuner box, would not be of any use to use here. They'll release that before they release dual and triple tuner ones

Release Date for A3 in the US put back to July
Price is $229 Check out: titaniumsatellite.com

It does look good, I'll be tempted to upgrade if it does what it says on the tin :)

What file do you want to edit? What program are you using to do the ftp?

Timeshift allows you to pause, it's not doing anything until you hit pause, permanent timeshift allows you to rewind live tv, it runs continuously

The time shift within Hyperion works very well. I have it set to begin 2sec after channel change. Pause rewind forward all work very well and smoothly (its a critical feature in our house. No time shift , no alien!)
But , on a prompt from a comment here, I started to look into where the time shift files are stored, and discovered that they may be storing on the HDD , taking up large amounts of space.

Was wondering if the permanent time shift plugin did things differently? How/where did it store files? What are the advantages of the plugin over the built in TS?

Permanent timeshift allows you to rewind live TV (performance issues as it's continuously writing to the drive), where the ordinary timeshift is not saving until you press pause (therefore no performance issues)

That sounds like Permanent timeshift as its continuosly recording .

The timeshift files are only temporarily stored for a few hours and then deleted so you are probably only looking at 2-3 hours of data, which isnt much storage .

The TS as set from the interface settings , automatically begins after 2 secs from when a channel is selected, which means it begins background recording then. Do if I flick to a channel, watch it for an hour, I can rewind 58 mins 58secs. (Or you can set it to begin what ever time you wish after channel change. ) it works the same as sky + in that regard ( and the time shift plugin) .
The time shift on spark works as you describe above (as far as I remember).
I think I will download the permanent TS and compare. I did use it back at the start of my setting up the Alien2.
It was only when I found large timesshift files that made me wonder.

What you describe above is permanent timeshift, where it starts automatically after 2 mins allowing you to rewind live TV. Normal Enigma timeshift does not automatically start, it activates when you press pause

The time shift built into the Hyperion works that way. Have been using thus since V3.
Try it out, by activating it in the interface settings. You may be pleasantly surprised at how well it works. (Ensure you have the record paths set up, which I think are done by default)

I'm using permanent timeshift on freshpots v3 and v4 images saving to external hdd and find it works grand. No issues

I'm not running Hyperion, I don't have it. I'm running OpenPLI

I downloaded your backup a while ago, but haven't had a chance to load it ( or any other one of late. Bright evenings leaves little time for box tinkering. Will get round to it . am curious about the Italy fix)
Did I read somewhere that there was a new update to open pli in the last 2 weeks? May be wrong)

I'm not running Hyperion, I don't have it. I'm running OpenPLI

I loaded up your backup image. quite nice. seems stable. have yet to play around. (instead of scanning for the channels, I used dreambox edit to telnet in my list of channels. saved having to scan. worked out fine)
Got a green screen when accessing network settings (was getting same thing on my own Hyperion V4 back up. wonder is it an issue my side?)
Your image does have the timeshift option, and it works well (setup - system- user interface- automatically start timeshift afer) However I notice your Keymap is not setup with the fast forward/ rewind buttons to ff/fr . but on your set up the number buttons will advance/go back a set number of seconds. I seem to remember you looking for a solution to a keymap issue a while back.

But nice image. will play around with it.
thanks for making it available for download.

    Alright lads,

anyone know how to boot into spark, im running champions image which is class but i wanna have a look at the spark, i read that the HD channels are much better on the spark firmware. On any enigma2 image they seem poor at best

    1) Switch off your Box
    2) Press and hold the OK button on the front of the box for a few seconds while you switch on the box till you see FORC in the display
    3) Release OK and press the button P+ > on the front of the box SPAR should appear in Display
    4) Now confirm by pressing OK on the front of the box .Box will boot now always in Spark mode.

Switching to Enigma is same way, just press P- at point 3)

I'll be honest I spend ages trying to compare the picture quality between Spark and E2 and I saw very little difference.
The primary difference is that the picture contrast is higher in Spark than the E2 images.
This is fine for LED/LCD tvs but not great for plasma sets as they aren't as bright.

I found HDMU has the best picture quality for HD channels ,that's what I use on my high end Panasonic plasma.
Hyperion is too dark ,its default contrast levels (which cant be adjusted in the image) are too low.Whites almost look creamy .

I've compared the picture on the Alien 2 to numerous other E2 receivers and its excellent.

Had a play around with it in Cologne at Angacom this week , nice bit of kit , hope to have a sample in 2-3 weeks ,

The remote is pretty slick and works like an air mouse ,

They had no Sat signal running into it so didnt get to check how XBMC worked with Sat headend but overall the feel and look is very nice.

Both Amiko and Sab have them, Its a strange set up both companies do exactly the same products just differing badges .

I was wondering if somebody could shed some light on the issue i'm having with record. Everytime I record a programme after it has finished recording I loose sat or terrestrial channels just get message on screen 'Service not found'. I have to reboot then on reboot I get a green screen and the box boots again which resolves the problem. I have tried different solutions and even borrowed somebody else's external harddrive as I thought it was causing the problem. This problem as only started happening since the last weekend before this it was OK. Bizarre!

That's a problem with some images, hdmu and maybe one or two more. Which image are you using?

Hi All, I am new to this 400 page thread, and looking for some advice please

I have an Amiko Alien box which was i got about a year ago,

I have gone into settings and see Enigma 2013/12/22-master

I am keen to upgrade to the latest stable release for this box, and I am not sure where to start
ie which release is best, and how to update

We have the box connected to a Saorview system, ie aerial and dish

The box is hard wired to my NTL router cat 6

the Amiko is connected to a LED TV , 3d capable

I have hear that you can , view other channels on a laptop, while another channel being being viewed on TV. I am not sure how to

Nice to have features for me would be

view other channels on a laptop, while another channel being being viewed on TV.
    pause live TV
Not essential, but nice to have : The ability to connect 3tb powered USB drive, watch movies on HDD (using the Amiko), with some kinda of movie information, pulled from the web

RTE Player, C4 player , BBC player, would be useful too

    Thanks A mil

No need to be smart okay. But these questions have answers throughout this thread. Anyone can be stuck and need help, but when the answers already exist on more than 1 occasion there's absolutely no need for them to be duplicated yet again.

A good place to start, is to have a browse through the firmware thread. Folks have very generously put up some back ups of images they have built upon. There an here you will see discussion about some of the strengths/weaknesses of the respective back up.
Most on here are using a version of open-arp, open pli, HDMU, or Hyperion (which is really a version of open pli) They will all do what you are looking for, but some may suit better than others.
A good place to start is by setting up a plugin to run in Spark that allows you to make back ups ( search for Championc's post about plugins)
Then pick a backup. There are lots of posts about how to do it here, but when you get to that point , someone will help. Also, make sure you have a USB key (flash drive ) that works with the box.

Also some folks use Spark, which gives a very good quality picture is very stable, and easy to use
