Burst the small blisters and immediately after doing so, dip a cotton bud/pad in boiling water and dab it on the cold sore. Apply carex/activir 2/3 times a day or as directed.

Stick an iron to your face, you won't notice the cold sore amidst the 4th degree burns.

well where did you hear that l-lysine can cure cold sores???? And what foods is it in???

    Lets hear it!

It was recommended to me by a couple of people. I looked it up, like you should be doing yourself. I tried it and it worked. Now I use it all the time and I avoid 9/10 cold sores.
Don't be so lazy and expect everyone to do your work for you.

Those little clear patches you can get that go over the area and prevent it from scabbing are great - couldn't believe how effective that worked for me, still took a few days but the unsightly part of it was avoided at least.

Check out the Boots cold sore machine as well, heard great things about it.

Some people say that regular icing the area when you feel a tingle can help, in tandem with taking l-lysine.

I just pour a teaspoon of salt on it if I can. It stings like hell but it can make it clear up within a day or two and it numbs it for a while.

If you only have one cold sore, is it a herpe?

Is herpe the singular of herpes??

    :D

I would get a very severe cold sore about 3 to 4 times a year on my upper lip since I was about 6 years old. I used Zovirax with varying results depending on how early I used. 5 years ago I was living in New York and a doctor there prescribed Valtrex to me and it is amazing. Life changing. I've now had 2 to 3 cold sores in the last 5 years. The sun/fatigue seem to start the process but if I take a valtrex tablet early the cold sore doesn't appear and on the couple of occasions it did, it disappeared quickly. The active ingredient is the same as Zovirax etc but it is extremely effective. I take about 6-10 tablets a year and I think they are about €4 a tablet. So worth it. Prescription only and you must drink plenty of water with them. Valtrex is mainly used in the US for genital herpes (a different strain) which thankfully I don't have as it is supposed to be horrendous. Very important to be very careful when facial herpes is active. Stay above the covers! Hope that helps. Cheers.

Lysine supplements will help prevent cold sores.

    Not that expensive to buy.

That's exactly what people on the Internet who make big claims should do. Link or get off the pot.

I hate to be your sex eduation teacher here but you can contract an STD without having sexual intercourse.

If it's not transmitted sexually how can it be a sexually transmitted disease? Herpes, which he has is both a STD and something you can get from your grandma. With a chaste kiss.

Anyway, OP, Zovirax works if you get there early but, obviously, buy it before the outbreak. You should recognise the tingle. Can't speak for the other stuff mentioned.

I don't have the energy to read 5 pages of comments

There are tablets you can take (at the first tingle) that will prevent it from breaking out. Pretty much everyone carries the virus, but some people are more susceptible to breakouts than others.

The tablets I have are called Acyclovir and they are prescription only.

I'm so paranoid, I keep some tablets in the car, in my office, in my gym bag, in my travel wash kit etc.

They work 99% of the time

I too recommend L lysine about 7 euro n better than any.other expensive cream.
And by taking them cuts down on the amount of cold sores that you get.

I get a coldsore 2-3 times a year. I tend to get them when I'm a bit rundown but also found that if I drank a beer/fizzy drink from a can I would get a coldsore soon after. I try to drink with a straw to avoid this.

Zovirax is great, big blob of it as soon as you feel the tingle, and as often as you can manage. I got the patches last time and I wasted two of them before getting it right on the third one so that might just be me being clumsy but I probably won't buy them again.

Going to get some lysine though after reading about it here!

Don't go kissing babbies! I don't know this'd be something you do regular or not but if ya decide to take up baby-kissing then definately don't do it if you've got a cold sore. Those things can be lethal for young babies.

Ask your GP for Aciclovir tablets. 5 days for treatment. But if you want't to get rid of cold sores on forever, then 6 months on tablets are advisable.

Used to get 4-5 really bad cold sores a year since I was in primary school - went 1 horrific cold sore a month for 6 months two years ago...

Glad to say since I started on L-Lysine (2 tabs a day in the morning: 1000mg), have literally 1-2 tiny flare ups in total. I actually stopped talking the tablets for the best part of half a year, and no matter how run down I was - like working 70-80 hours weeks (I would usually get cold sores with anything like this), I didn't get one sore.

Ended up getting a slight sore about 5 weeks ago, ran to Boots and picked up two for three on L-Lysine tablets, popped 6 tablets a day (2 morning, afternoon and evening) for 3 days: BOOM, cold sore did not go past the initial slight bumpy stage and started receding.

Also found the Compeed Coldsore patches absolutely brilliant at killing the cold sore dead. Tea tree oil is also fantastic as it is anti-viral, but do be warned that it can burn (read: make it really dry and flake off) the skin if applied too much!

Basically: get L-Lysine (and take it everyday, increasing dosage if you get a coldsore), have the Compeed pads and tea tree oil as a safety.

As far as I know, lysine is over the counter stuff, but I presume it isn't as effective as valtrax or zovirax

Get some L-Lysine and take a load as soon as you feel a tingle. At the same time you also need to avoid eating nuts and chocolate as well as drinking lots of water.

and avoid caffeine , and citrus , take l lysine every day , it help prevent them appearing

stress , sun light and the coming of a cold or flu is what triggers them , the trick is to notice the tingle , the SOONER you get a patch on it the better , the compeed patches i swear by, it cuts the healing time by half , and makes them less noticeable.

so at some point your immune system is down to a level where the virus is activated and returns to the nerve system around your mouth and lips , normally the same place on your lip , i hate them with a passion , but as it was said to me once " at least they are not on your cock " - true for ya

keep in mind 8 out of ten people WORLD WIDE have the virus , it just only gets triggered for a un lucky few

You forgot to massage the cold sore with a cheese grater dipped in vinegar. Works a treat

    Another one for L-lysne here.

Get in boots, about 7/8 quid. Its more for prevention than cure.

Take one tablet every morning. I started taking it start of winter, after i got 3 coldsores in space of a month. Cold weather plays havoc with my lips.

Anyway tried all the creams and evetually went in and asked for something else.

Got this and been taking it since and not even had a tingle.

    Best investment ive ever made.

Is there anything I can do apart from leaving it alone, or the patches? I've looked all over and there doesn't seem to be any treatments for it. They're supposed to be caused by viruses, but I always seem to get one just underneath my lower lip after eater porridge. It feels like it's something to do with the spoon rubbing against the lip and the porridge drying on it?

Take a lysine supplement the minute you feel the tingle coming on. Don't eat porridge when you have one. It contains arginine and apparently this is not good for them. This has worked for me. I haven't had one in ages.
